Fog's Hunters (cazadores de Neblina).

What called my attention, when I was writing “Pre-hispanic Peruvian Medicine”-2002- was to know that it was possible to identify and to study DNA of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, of remainders of pulmonary tissues originating in a Peruvian mummy found in the desert of Ica (south-Peru), with an antiquity of 1000 years. Simple to understand: the heat and the extreme heat of the place impeded the decay eliminating all kinds of germs. Nevertheless, as opposed to Peru whose desert areas are of smaller state, in Chile, the desert of Atacama, extends along 1100 kms. Tibor Dunai, investigator of the University of Edinburgh, affirms that during 5 days, did not see a single fly -while he spent the night in the Chilean desert- because they did not have anything that to eat.

Still when one think that in those circumstances it will be difficult to live, there are ways to fix them to it in a very creative form. Bolivian and Chilean (1 million people), developed creativity during hundreds of years, to live alli. If you do not believe me, know about these 2 jewels of survival in Atacama: 1) HUNTERS OF FOGS (see picture top-left), before the scarce of water, the government of Chile in covenant with Canadian scientific institutions, has placed in operation since 1995, a fine framework of metallic networks that to be positioned vertical, capture any fog, extracting him the last drop of water, the same one that is stored in barrels (until 10 000 litros/dia/agua). They will be applying in African countries, this technique? 2) VEGETATION IN LOMAS (HILLS), in the concave areas of sandy elevations, it is possible to cause to grow a community of vegetables. From there to take advantage of this and to raise with success the keep of llamas and alpacas (camelids), does not be distant a lot. The most risked chilean enterpreneurs are employing irrigation by leak, to grow olives, cucumbers, tomato, etc in the desert of Atacama.
