Can the present technology clone mammoths (shaggy elephants), from remainders of its DNAs (1, 600 000-10, 000 years of antiquity), preserved in ice? According to Thomas Gilbert of the Ancient Biomolecules Center, University of Oxford -UK-, this alone would be possible if we would count with a) the totality of the DNA nuclear of a mammoth (Mammothus primigenius) and b) an primitive egg (cell), of a mammoth, that shelter it. We see the case, with other eyes : A) In an article appeared today in the Science magazine, we are informed of the total reconstruction of the DNA mitocondrial –DNAmit- (not, nuclear), of a mammoth of 10 000 years of antiquity, preserved in permafrost (ice of the subsoil), the same that has established that Asian elephants and mammoths had an common ancestor, does 5 million years. Likewise that DNAmit, was reconstructed with the technique of polimerase chain reaction (PCR), that amplify segments of DNAmit, from scarce 200 milligrams of bone.

What is learned with this DNAmit, is already known: genes that lack, genes that exceed. For us the DNA nuclear of a mammoth could be reconstructed virtually in a computer. Placing in screen, the DNA nuclear of an present asiatic elephant, it will be enough with going him adding the suggested genes (the polar bears fur developers, for example), or withdrawing genes. The genomic outlined in such way, would permit to carry out subsequently the in vivo reconstructions of ancient mammoths. B) ancient eggs, where to nest the DNA. For us the egg, is alone an energetic of reserve environment that permits the initial fast and maintained growth of the project of mammoth. I think that the egg of a present Asiatic elephant, suffices to harbor the DNA (reconstructed or generated artificially), of an old mammoth.
