Mexico :Large Millimeter Telescope (LMT).

Large Milliméter Telescope (LMT). Characteristics:
Size : Antenna: 50 diameter meters
Weight : Antenna: 2600 tons
Base : Structure of concreto:5 a thousand 300 m2 with 37 pillars anchored 20 m
Reach : 13 thousand 400 m of years light
Location : To 4580 m. on the sea level
Cost : 128 million dollars
Lifespan: 30 years.

The Mexican President Vicente Fox inaugurated 2 days ago, a telescope outdoors, giant, similar to an enormous satellital disk, located in Tliltépetl (inactive Volcano, well-known as Sierra Negra. 4580 m.a.s.l. Latitude: + 19.), in the high mountains of the state of Puebla. This Large Millimeter Telescope (LMT) that has cost 128 million dollars, is capable of capturing radio waves that have traveled for the space for 13 billion years light. So that LMT, capture these waves, it is necessary to have a limpid sky with scarce clouds, as the available one in the summit of the volcano Tlitépetl. The LMT, at the moment the world biggest of sensitive telescopes to electromagnetic radiation of millimetric waves (0,85 mm - 4 mm) -of simple opening- will allow to scrutinize the formation and evolution of galaxies, stars, comets, planetary atmospheres, extrasun planets, hierarchical growth of galaxies and clusters of galaxies and their distribution to great scale, as well as the cosmic radiation of microwaves and their anisotropies, the origin of the universe and until signals of extraterrestrial civilizations, said :José Guichard, Director of Astrophysics National Institute. As we know, if the gas is sufficiently cold as to conform molecules, these will rotate around some of their axes and when the rotation movement diminishes, they emit waves millimétric waves. The microwaves little explored in astronomy, will allow to see through the interstellar powder that darkens many astronomical phenomena.

With millimetric astronomy, it is possible to explore the densest, colds and powdery environments of the Universe, true centers of formation of newborn cosmic structures. The President Fox, said that LMT, will put to Mexico "to the scientific vanguard and of investigation in this field." It will work starting from the 2008, thanks to economic contributions of Mexico (65%) and USA (35%), said the astrophysicist Emmanuel Méndez, Chief of the Mexican National Institute of Astrophysics, Optics and Electronic (INAOE) that together with the University of Massachussets (UMass Amherst), leads the project. The LMT was designed by the company MAN Technologie/Germany, to request of the University of Massachussets, to carry out astronomical observations in millimétric waves that will allow us to measure accurately: speed, temperature, density, magnetic field and physical/chemical conditions of astronomical phenomena, thanks to low levels of humidity and latitude in which the LMT, is located. Problems: 1) Microwaves are devoured by vapor of water. For that reason, in order to observe distant objects, the surrounding atmosphere must lacks humidity 2) Another enemy is the speed of the wind. The LMT was designed to support winds of up to 200 kilometers for hour or moderate loads of wind, of less than 5m/sec. 3) the slow calibration (several hard years) process, conducive to a full operability. For the operation and maintenance of LMT, is required an annual investment of 4,5 million dollars, guaranteed by INAOE and the University of Massachusetts. The combination of a great collector area and a wide field of vision of 8 minutes of diameter arch, will give LMT towering cartography speeds. Advantage that will be exploited with the instrumentation of first class light that includes several continuous cameras, heterodyne arrangements, receivers of wide band, and a multiproposal self-correlator spectrometer. The LMT, has an underground hollow round, of 40 m diameter and 6 meters deep, besides very big several rooms that at the present time house laboratories, bedrooms, kitchens, sanitariums and rooms of control of the LMT. Its lifespan calculated in 30 years, will be able to lengthen with appropriate restorations of its pieces, in the next years.

Mexico : Large Milliméter Telescope (LMT). Caracteristicas:
