Powdered mineral, in tiny particles (12 nanometers), similar to iron oxide (rust), could be a cheap and simple method to remove dangerous levels of arsenic of drinkable water, affirmed scientifics of the University of Rice/Houston/Texas. The supplies of water in Bangladesh and the Hindu state of western Bengale, are polluted with arsenic and their inhabitants believe that the one liquidates that they drink is safe. To diminish its arsenic levels would contribute to reduce cancer risks, diabetes, thickening of the skin, liver affections, of the alimentary canal, nervous and auditory disorders in millions of poor from China and southeast asiatic countries. If somebody drinks water with 50 microgramos for liter of arsenic, 1.2% of people could contract cancer, Dr. Dipankar Chakraborti says that he is disagreement with the recommended levels (sure) by the government of Bangladesh: 50 arsenic parts, for million, nevertheless that OMS recommends 10 parts for million, or less. The contamination happens for natural liberated arsenic to the waters for underground rocks, especially the one that comes from Himalaya . Thanks to the nanotechnology, spaces where it is common that the materials exhibit novel behaviors, the investigators created tiny iron oxide crystals (magnetite), of 12 nanometers, level in which magnetite particles can unite up to 100 times but arsenic that particles of more size. Blended with the polluted water, the small crystals covered to the arsenic and behaved as covered with iron, easily removed by industrial and household magnetos. The researchers said that the method was so simple that it would allow to remove polluted water contained in a pail of water, with a simple magneto placed in the bottom of the same one. It would cost "2 cents of dollar to a family of 4 people, Mason B. Tomson, said. Tomsom, engineering teacher in the University of Rice. Tomson added that the process would leave residuals able to fill a pail in one year that the peasants could eliminate in conditioned fields. According to: Alexander Geen, investigator of Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory in the University of Columbia, they are now about investigating the kindness of magnetite in other minerals: zirconium, aluminum, iron, made up of manganese, etc. And also of exploring other technologies: vegetables that absorb arsenic, special filters of clay, excavation of wells but deep for extraction of water, free of arsenic.

Anticontaminantes, a nanoescala.
