THE ESCEPTICAL ENVIRONMENTALIST

Using the same data of UN, FAO, World Bank -and others- a vast baggage of statistical knowledge and an innate scepticism, Bjorn Lomborg when publishing : The skeptical environmentalist, has put uner fire a string of truths, effective until now but for the fear that for the consistency of appropriate data. The book insists on prioritizing humanity's resources to confront its more important problems (AIDS, fights against malaria and poverty, etc). Longborg, adduces that should not be the environmentalist organizations, the groups of political pressure or the media, those in charge of determining the priorities, but the democratic society and that the state of the planet and the humanity is not catastrophic. In THE LITANY (C. I): he analyzes the pessimistic messages sustained by the Institute Worldwatch, the World Fund for the Nature (WWF), Greenpeace, David Pimentel, Paul Ehrlich, etc., to transmit a negative litany that generate a collective terror. 2) in THE HUMAN WELL-BEING, (C.II), he analyzes several populational indicators, noticing that all have improved in the last century. He proposes other measures: health/useful life-span, food/hunger, income/inequality, educatión/security. In CAN STAY THE HUMAN PROSPERITY? (C.III), he analyzes the sustainability of the humanity's development and the use that we make of the resources (renewable and not renewable), assuring that the form of fighting against the hunger in the poorest countries, goes by a bigger economic growth. He sustains that forests are not threatened, because the indicators stay constant in the last 60 years and that the current consumption of wood and paper is covered with alone 5% of the current forest area. He assures that we will stop to use petroleum when we have a fuel but cheap. He remembers that nuclear energy is clean, since CO2 doesn't expel and that the obtaining of this should be centered in the fusion and not in the fission. Concerning to the overpopulation he remembers that the problem is not the quantity of people, because the countries more populated are those but prosperous. He argues that many renewable energy (sun), are not yet competitive, because they are expensive and that the humanity has enough fossil fuels. For Lomborg every day are discovered new energy resources, that are used in a more efficient way and that the capacity to recycle and to substitute them is increasing. With regard to water, he sustains that there are enough resources and that the problem is its bad use. It is necessary to avoid the domestic and agricultural waste and to develop the desalination.

In THE CONTAMINATION (C.IV), he analyzes the atmospheric contamination, a problem that goes improving. He argues that most particles (smoke-soot, SO2, O3, lead, NO, NO2), that affect the health, comes from volcanos in eruption, fires of forests, storms of sand and marine dew and that alone a smaller percentage comes from vehicles, central electric, industries and chimneys. That the death of forests for sour rain is small and that in Europe, never happened. The contamination of the water shows improvements, because have diminished the concentrations of coastal pollutants in fish and shellfish. Concerning to the garbage, there is space to store it. In FUTURE PROBLEMS (C.V), he assures that the connection between pesticides and cancer has not been proven in USA, although he is in favor of a partial reduction of the use of the same ones, whenever it doesn't suppose a social cost. He sustains that synthetic estrogens don't reduce the quality of the sperm neither cause cancer of breasts. Concerning to the biodiversity loss, he emphasizes the deliberate exaggeration of the numbers on the part of environmentalist, when sustaining that the disappearance of the number of species beat 20% annual, while the real figures for the next 50 years are 0,7%. Longborg, accepts the global heating caused by human beings, although he questions the scenarios proposed for the future. He sustains that the elevation of the level of the sea, on the other hand, won't be excessive and it will be controlled by the governments, that the number of deaths would be increase for heat but will be lower than the rate of winter mortality that overcomes in 15-20% to that of the summer. That the floods, are conditioned by the election of establishment areas, but that for climatic changes. He emphasizes that a moderate increment of temperatures is not completely harmful neither for the health neither for the crops, being its effects:controllable. He proposes the reduction of the emissions of CO2 in a gradual way, until having fuels but cheap. In THE REAL STATE OF THE WORLD (C.VI), he adds new critics to the environmentalist litany, sustaining that the real state of the world has improved. He emphasizes that humanity's main problem is the poverty for whose solution he demands the donation of 0,7% of the GDP of developed countries. He also argues that at the moment big quantities of resources are dedicated to palliate problems with which we can cohabit, neglecting others of immediate necessity. Finally he sustains that in a democratic society, the information should be transparent.
