MIRRORS, NARCISSUS and Us.

Mirrors can afford us some surprises:
1)They are used to study how the brain decide among the self and non-self, how it judges distances and trajectories of objects and how it reconstructs starting from a sheet of 2D retinal photoreceptors, to the rich quality of the 3D external world.
2) Mirrors can subtly affect human behavior in a positive sense. Mirrors are applied in medicine to create reflected reconstructed images of lost extremities, deceiving the brain, inducing it to operate a self-healing (syndrome of phantom member, chronic pain and post stroke paralysis).
3)Although face-recognition in mirrors is rare among animals, dolphins and Asian elephants, analyze in front of a mirror marks applied to their faces, scrutinize its mouths, noses, genital and until its personal hygiene. Up to now only humans, dolphins and elephants had demonstrated this ability. Monkeys and birds perceive themselves like strangers. An animal capable of self recognition can infer the thought of others.
4) According to, C. Neil Macrae, Galen V. Bodenhausen and Alan B. Milne, in a living room with mirrors one works hard, but healthily and chat less, compared with control groups without mirrors. In living rooms with mirrors, people judge less to others, based on social stereotypes of sex, race or religion, because mirrors help them to know themselves first. However, before mirrors, liars can increase their tendencies.
5)Nicholas Epley and Erin Whitchurch asked people to identify images of themselves, inside a heap of distractors. The participants identified their features but quickly if these favored them aesthetically. “We don't shine equally every day, says Epley (University of Chicago. Graduate School of Business), we have images for each occasion”. If ambiguity exists, people on average solves this, to its favor choosing the images but attractive, with the help of an internal brain fotoshop.

6)When we observe our reflected image in front of a mirror, a question is important : how big is our reflected image on the surface of the mirror? What will pass to that size, if we go back? The answers are always erroneous: my reflected face, is bigger than my real face, the size of my face will decrease if I go back. Wrong, because our reflected face, will always be half of the size of the real face, let us go back or not, although the environment changes. According to Marco Bertamini (U/Liverpool), our reflected image doesn't change because the mirror always is in the half between the observer and its reflection. But if a friend comes closer or moves away, his size in the mirror will grow or will be reduced.
7)Rebecca Lawson, explains the previous with the 6 tall, identical twin's example, separated by a mobile division. How tall will be the window in the division, to allow to one of them, to see the 6 feet of the other one?. The window need visible light of the top of the head and of the bottom of the other twin's feet. Then the light will converge before the twin observer's eyes. a) If the division is near the twin observer, the superior and inferior light points, have begun to converge, so the opening needs to be to 6 feet of high to allow to see the whole body. b) If the division is far from the twin observer the light has concluded of converging, so the window will be small. c) If the division is in the half, the opening will be of 3 feet of high (the half). The mirrors follows the same laws, Lawson says. For that reason when we look at ourselves in front of a mirror we become a Narcissus eternally chained to our half image reflected in the other side.

ESPEJOS, NARCISO y NOSOTROS

University of Chicago

MATH and SEX

Until recently it was accepted that girls were less gifted for math. As it is known, most mathematicians and physicist of fame, are men. For if it was little, a recent PISA evaluation, made among 15 year-old students (276 000) in 40 cities, in which equality had been developed in the teaching for both sexes in the course of the years, gave as a result that still in some countries (Turkey, etc), the boys calculated better than girls. The results were explained by cultural reasons.

In a study carried out the 2006 for Ilan Dar Nimrod and Steven Heine (U. of British Columbia/Vancouver/Canada), diverse results were achieved: to a group of women it was them bad, being adduced for them genetic reasons, as long as another feminine group obtained similar results to that of children, being adduced for them the decisive push of self-confidence. Now a study led by the psychologist Janet Hyde (U. of Wisconsin), carried out in 7 million American children (2 to 11 grade. "Non Child Left Behind"), showed that although feminine logic is different there are not sexual differences to solve arithmetic and geometry problems. P.D: although the difference was minimum in some states women obtained better notes than children.

SEXO y MATEMATICAS.

MATERNAL MILK, ARTIFICIAL MILK and FLAVOURS

div align="justify">Nature has given maternal milk the easiness of transmitting flavors of the food ingested by the mother, to newborns in such way that the boy doesn't have problems to different nutritious flavors, neither immunologic rejection. Helene Hausner (University/Copenhagen/Denmark), requested to 18 pregnant women to ingest capsules of different flavors (bananas, liquorices, menthol, etc). Banana flavor, appeared in the milk 1 hour when having been ingested, the liquors in 2 hours and the menthol between 2 and 8 hours According to Gill Rapley the children fed with maternal milk are receptive to a wide range of flavors in opposition to children that ingest only artificial milk. We wonder if the mothers that ingest alcohol can transmit this propensity to their children.

LECHE MATERNA, LECHE ARTIFICIAL y SABORES

MEMORY VINDICATED

To beginnings of 2008, a scientific publication generated controversy when presenting the work of an American team that assured that training short memory (to pass exams), better scores was achieved in intelligence tests. How to forget "six, seven, eight, make a cake" that combines rhythm, rhyme and repetition, to facilitate early stadiums of learning of numbers. After it, the child will apply that memorized rhyme to other things (poetry, charts multiplication, square of the hypotenuse, periodic elements). The American team also showed that from 14 months the child categorizes objects, to retain them better. From 1968, in France the use of memory is no longer rejected, but well they try to rehabilitate it. Suchaut Bruno (Institute for Educational Research: CNRS-Iredu), speaks of the virtues of learning multiplication charts. Mental arithmetic help to compensate cognitive deficits. Experimental psychologist Alain Lieury (Rennes-II) is pioneer in memory rehabilitation. Bajosu, another psychologist assures that knowledge of material’s vocabulary is the major predictor of academic success. For it, he struggles to bend the size from the vocabulary of 6 000 new terms to 24 000 words at the end of the college. To those bigger than that age, are offered a battery of brain activity tending to slow the time of appearance of Alzheimer, taking them to exercise console games to maintain active, their hemispheres.

In their private cogitations, Descartes was revealed against the mnemonic method. Lambert Schenkel, mnemonic of the time: "the one that memorizes the causes will make reformulations but easy in his brain. This is the true art of the memory. In the Half Age the coming of the book doesn't dethrone the memory that was the primary source of creation from the antiquity. While intelligence chooses to few, the memory is but democratic. Helps to the memorization to vary the angle of presentation of the vocabulary. The repetition implies that words are part of the long term memory, that is not mechanical and gives opportunity to the brain to organize knowledge, adding it meaning "to learn how to understand and vice versa". To read is better than audiovisual programs. With the memory if you don't understand, you can come back an memorize again and again. The emergency of Internet, improving the access to the knowledge, increases the opportunities to confront the vocabulary in a variety of contextos. Emerge then a fundamental question: If the national education cannot avoid the memory why to bother available, immediate knowledge. It would not be better to examine in the students the ability to organize in an appropriate way this knowledge? If a correlation exists between the size of the vocabulary and the academic success, are not synonymous memory with intelligence? According to Alain Lieury, the opposition between memory and intelligence, is sterile because they are interdependent processes. Without the memory the brain would be an marvelous (but empty) documental space.

NEW VESSELS to OVERCOME INFARCTS.

It seems that vascular obstructions (thrombus, embolisms), that cause human deadly heart and brain attacks, are on track to be resolved successfully. Joyce Bischoff and his team have managed to build extensive networks of capillary blood vessels in mice (in one week), to which they infused mixtures of progenitors-cells: endotelial and mesenchimal (adyacent to lumen, capillary tissue). The interesting thing is that progenitors cells can be obtained from bone marrow, peripheral blood and cord blood. For years, bioenginers manufactured bladders, intestines and partial livers. Now that will be posible to add the capillary networks to the referred organs.

HUMAN FERTILISATION : YEAR 2040.

30 years after the birth of the first tube baby, innovations in reproductive medicine does not seem to stop. In vitro fertilisation (IVF), leads so far to moral, ethical and medical discssions. Although the technique has been improved, it is expensive and needed several attempts, several ova and embryos to succeed. Several researchers respond now to questionnaires of Helen Pearson (Nature), in relation to trends in this area, for the next 30 years: Davor Solter (Institute of Medical Biology/Singapore) 1) sperm and ova will be derived from induced pluripotent stem cells (IPS) (obtained from skin or other cells, with potential to develop into any body cell), combined each other to create human embryos, so that every person regardless of age (newborns or people of 100 years or more) may have children. 2) If these embryos are able to be cultivated, many problems will disappear. We could then introduce any genetic modification and create cell lines that will dissapear mutations. It will be posible also derived mutant embryos for research purposes. 3) Will be used artificial placentas, to have desired progeny. It will be completed a full ectogénesis (fetal development in artificial uterus outside the body), avoiding premature births. Alan Trounson, (Institute for Regenerative Medicine.Ca/San Francisco). 4) We will extend the period of fertile women through IPS technology and variants of nuclear transfer. There will be stem cell banks for very young people to avoid accumulation of genetic errors at late age. 5) Artificial chromosomes and genetic cassettes will be inserted into human embryo with genetic diseases (Huntington's, Parkinson's). The costs of IVF, down considerably. Susannah Baruch, (Reproductive Genetics/Johns Hopkins University). 6) Reiterates the already in use preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) to discover unique genetic disorders 7) It will be bet on babies to design, to improve their health. Alastair Sutcliffe (Pediatric/University College London). 8) Ii will be needed to know whether changes will have epigenetic effects (changes in the way that genes are expressed). It is believed that Beckwith Wiedemann syndrome, is more common in children conceived by IVF. Scott Gelfand, (Ethics Center/Oklahoma State University). 9) Babies will survive after 12 weeks (currently only survive after 22 weeks). Miodrag Stojkovic, (Prince Philip Centre of Investigation/Valencia, Spain) 10) Will be reproductive cloning of babies, but the goal is not to obtain copies of them, but the derivation of stem cells, not to be rejected by the patient's immune system. The pluripotentiality also has disadvantages (cancer). Zev Rosenwaks (Reproductive Medicine and Infertility/New York). It will be possible to eradicate infertility. It is the time of artifical gametes. Natural ova, have reached the limit of their biology. VIF is expected to reach 70% of success, with one cycle, but nobody can ensure that the embryo will be normal. It is expected to have embryo growth media and techniques of micro-image to observe the chromosome make-up. Régine Sitruk-Ware (Population Council/New York) 11) Many current methods of contraception have side effects and are not effective. It will be tested non-hormonal methods of contraception among women and men (arrest of maturation of egg or sperm entry into the egg).

Alan Trounson, (Institute for Regenerative Medicine.

Zev Rosenwaks (Reproductive Medicine and Infertility/New York). Régine Sitruk-Ware (Population Council/New York) 11) Muchos métodos contraceptivos actuales tienen efectos colaterales y no son efectivos.

TERRAQUEOUS UFO

Using environmental energy, a professor of the University of Florida, seeks to create the first terraqueous UFO, circular, without moving parts, using electrodes -rather than fossil energy- scattered across its surface, with which will ionize the surrounding air, making plasma. As it is known, gases such as air, with equal numbers of positive and negative charges, by effect of heat or electricity, become plasma energy, which manages air atoms to lose their electrons to generate positively charged atoms or positive ions surrounded by new released electrons.

One source of energy on board, (batteries, ultracapacitators, solar panels, etc.), will stimulate the electrodes, who will send an electric current to the plasma, which will push the neutral air(not loaded), which surrounds the ship generating enough force for the UFO to be raised and move in different directions (depending to what part of the ship, is directed the current). The space engineer Subrata Roy, plans to have a mini model completed by 2009: Weaver ("wingless electromagnetic air vehicle). Roy said that the body of this UFO, will be made from ceramics (light and good conductor of electricity). Plasma is the most abundant matter in the universe.

CROPS in SKYSCRAPERS

Dickson Despommier, a public health professor (Columbia University), intended to sow vegetables in wide and high built skyscrapers. The system is ideal for certain terraqueous inhospitable areas (Africa and others), because in these cases: 1) there would be saving of water, since it would be technically administered and recycled 2) Crops would be better protected against natural environmental aggressions 3) Crops would be better protected against plagues 4) Control of growth and storage of crops, would be better carried out. 5) It is a highly rational and coherent project, as long as we are in the beginnings to colonize near planets.6) Finally, consumers will eat fresh vegetables.

AGRICULTURA de ALTURA

Dickson Despommier,

METEORITE of CARANCAS

In spite of the lapsed time, it is not completely clear if the meteorite that fell out to earth in Carancas/Peru, the 15 of September of the 2007, originating a crater of 13 m of diameter, was composed entirely for rocks or had an iron nucleus to discover. Stone meteorites usually fragment in many pieces in the atmosphere being disseminated in earth in a wide area without causing bigger dangers. By the way, that identified up to now in Carancas, are remains of stones. For Jay Melosh, geophysical of the University of Arizona/Tucson, the remains found in Carancas, are so soft that they come undone to the tact. I) Peter Schultz, geologist of Brown University/Rhode Island/USA, sustains that fragments of stone meteorites, traveling to high speeds can stay together, looking like a swarm when entering to the atmosphere thanks to the formation of a shock wave that acts as barrier. There are like test, the mineral grains, index of high temperatures.

II) Natalia Artemieva and a german team -on the contrary- sustain that meteorite’s stone entrance was made with a slanting angle and a relatively slow speed to the atmosphere, fragmenting in few pieces: the bigger of 0.7 m of diameter, produced the crater with an impact speed of less than 200 m/s. III) Now Pavel Spurný (Astronomical Institute/Academy of Sciences/Czech Republic), sustains that the object: a monolithic meteoroid had a chance of surviving of 1/1 000 000, provided lacks irregularities or internal fissures. Using data of other meteorites (trajectory, speed, energy of the impact), created a computer model demonstrating that the meteorite had 0, 9-1,7 m of diameter, a force of 20-40 MPa, speed of 20 km/s (when crossing the atmosphere) and a speed of impact of 2-4 km s-1. It would be advisable that in the next Peruvian ECI, local researchers, exhibit alternating computer calculations.

METEORITE of CARANCAS.

MIND BODY PROBLEM

What would Descartes say, if he knew that his sentence "Cogito ergo sum" remains today fresher than before. "I think, then I exist," equals "we must question everything and create a new science", central and basic idea that prompted all scientific revolutions until today; initiated by the Greeks (which replaced the medieval magical thinking by another entirely rational), Galileo (which gave the results of scientific experimentation the final voice on matters of science), the theory of the evolution of species of Darwin (which established a continuum between a common organic ancestor : one humble cell and current complex animals), the theory of general and special relativity (linked physical movements and locations to their benchmarks), the quantum theory (which established statistics approaches rather than fixed measurements or precise location for elementary atomic particles), etc.

But there is a dark issue, a dark black box, that because of difficulties to study it, to date allows the existence of dualisms associated with extraterrestrial spirits that inhabit the hell or heaven, with bodies decoupled from them. Scientifics as Wolf Singer (Max Planck.Neurosciences), Gerhard Roth, Josef H. Reichholf (biologist-ecologist U Munich), Robert Laughlin B (theoretical physicist. Nobel Prize in Physics 1998/U Stanford), Sandra Mitchell (Philosophy of science. U. Pittsburgh), Rolf Landua (Physicist. European Nuclear Center) and others. Although some admit mind body dualism are emphatic in stating that the alleged spirits are emerging multimedia processes because of circumstances related to animal evolution (To read: next book of essays. Suhrkamp Publishing House). For men of science contradictions of mind-body dualism is dissolved as soon as each one of us accepts that each human being build his own multimedia system (The self) to be differentiated and fend off assaults of the environment (the non self), using 3D systems.

PROBLEMA MENTE CUERPO.

CHEAPER and SIMPLER SUN CELLS.

A great obstacle to the employment to great scale of sun energy is that it is diluted a lot, during the process of its storage. Now, a group of engineers of the MIT has solved partially the problem, creating planar waveguides organic concentrators of sun light that differ of the current photovoltaic solar panels in: I) they are made of glass or plastic and can be put in any place. Therefore, they don't have to be located only on the floors. They could be conforming the windows of big buildings II) they are covered with painting to specific ratios that allows to capture and to concentrate the sun light III) The captured light is reemitted into inorganic waveguided modes in the edges of the panels where are located sun cells reducing the area required for sun cells and the cost IV) When something of sun light escapes from the panel, this it is captured by another panel located under the first one.

PANELES SOLARES MAS BARATOS y EFICIENTES

WATCHING ATOMS

Researchers of the University of Rice, are putting on approval the atomic pattern of Bohr (electrons rotating around its nucleus, as the earth makes it around the sun). For it, they created a giant superátom (Rydberg-System particles), inflating atoms of K, to 50.000 times, its normal size. The atoms usually measure: 0,0000000002 m. That of Barry Dunning that manipulated the atom of K, measures :0,00001 m (0,01 mm). It is sought this way, to create an atom with study ends whose qualities compare to the pattern of Bohr. As it is known, the quantum mechanics describes the electronic process, better in the cover, establishing that electrons don't have position, they are packages of waves, blurred clouds of electrons, with different possibilities. Nevertheless, the pattern of Bohr can describe an atom well, as it would make, Dunnings.

In a first moment, the researchers excited (with laser beams), potassium atoms far from nucleus core to extremely high levels "to a condition highly stimulated with the quantum number: = 300", says : Joachim Burgdorfer (PhysicistU/Viena), co-author of the paper, published in Physical Review Letters. In one second stage, the formation of electronic waves was achieved, by means of sequences of compact electric pulses. With these, the electron acquired a distribution on the whole orbit, looking like the rings of Saturn, being corroborated that the electron is not punctual, but unpunctual. An electron fights to be part of a relatively compact package of waves. The electron orbited 10 times the nucleus before the package of waves stopped, in correspondence for very little time (nanoseconds), with the reality. Surprisingly it was found that: a) the artificial atom of K, differed of the pattern of planetary systems in a point: instead of gravity, electrons leaned on but well in the electrostatic attraction to stay in orbit. b) According to Robert Löw (U/Stuttgart), a characteristic of the quantum mechanical atom is to attract but of 1 electron to extremely distant orbits being able to conform giant atoms of long life, able to store a lot of energy in small areas. This way, the exploration of these artificial atoms could take to the generation of areas of computer storage of unsuspected capacities, important for the construction of future computers.

OBSERVANDO ATOMOS

MORE CARBON INSTEAD SILICON

The russian Igor Lukyanchuk (Physicist/University of Picardie/Amiens), said that the power of the PC could multiply for 1000, if silicon is replaced by graphite (crystalline form of carbón). In the 2004, Lukyanchuk, working with the physicist Yakov Kopelevich (University of Campinas/São Paulo, Brazil), discovered a remarkable property of the graphite: some electrons behave as photons, close to the superconductivity phenomenon (capacity of certain materials to drive electric current without resistance). Aart from being able to manufacture fleas, it would be possible with the aid of grafenos : to carry out simultaneous translations of voices, to compress pictures in but efficient form and to increase the power of calculus. In 2005, André Geim (University of Manchester) and Philip Kim (University of Columbia), isolated leaves of graphene ,with only 2 measurementss (long and wide) with diameter of the size of graphite atoms (angstroms), below the scale of the nanometer (10-9m), gestating a new electronics, with the carbon instead of silicon. While DARPA, tries to obtain a grapheno movie (50 mm x 50 mm), Geim dreams of manufacturing the first graphene transistor.
MORE CARBON INSTEAD SILICON

VIRTUAL and REAL WORLDS

The investigations that tie imagination (virtual reality cooked in our brains) and perception (objective realities, gathered by organs of senses), are given us a new form of seeing these realities I) The first thing that is extracted of these studies is that each person see his own world, being difficult to change the way that people with fixed ideas see the world. According to Joël Pearson (Vanderbilt University/Vision Research Center/Au) the real world is distorted during the process of data picked up due to the influence of the imagination. To eliminate the biases that pose virtual worlds is a task put over the shoulders of many philosophers and scientifics for a lot of time, having been explored by Goethe, Kant and taken to daily praxis by scientific chore in the last 150 years. II) Pearson demonstrates in a recent work that imagination forms part of the perceptions, being able in some cases, to change the perceived reality, totally. The typical case is the phantom limb syndrome, a process in which after the amputation of the leg of one patient, his brain refuses to recognize it like be absent.

III) So, mental imagination would contribute to a variety of functions of high cognitive level (memory codification, navigation, space planning, social communication and understanding of the language). It is a debatable matter if imagination leans on the same structural bases of perception. If it is so, which would be the functional consequences (overlap), of the interference of the imagination on that perceived. Pearson argues that imagination can influence strongly over conscious perceptions, building specific patterns. Experimentally, when 2 stimuli compete to reach the conscience (ocular rivalry), 2 dissimilar patterns are presented to each eye. In such cases the brain fails to produce a whole, stable and coherent pattern, experiencing alternating perceptions. At the end the brain solves this contradiction, appealing to previous patterns or imaginative projections. It is because that processes of high level lean on imagination (recovery), buildings representations of low sensorial level. That is to say: visual illusions modulate aspects of the awareness.

REALIDADES VIRTUAL Y REAL

The Tour of France (3554 km, 21 bike stages trough France and neighboring countries), summons from 5-27/July/2008, the last in up-to-date technology (clothes, human and bike aerodynamics, changes and speed gear), physiology, stamina, muscle development and to the almost unavoidable doping. A tour in which wins the one that uses less time in the 21 stages I) Concerning to muscle power the New York Times says that it is the more extenuant of all well-known athletic events, similar to climb the Everest. II) What frequently bears to the employment of forbidden substances as alcohol and ether to dull the pain, stimulants as ephedrine and amphetamines, somatropin, testosterone and steroids injections, to improve muscle power, transfusions of blood and Eritropoietina (EPO), to deliver more tissue oxygen, etc.

III) Concerning to up-to-date technology Scott Daubert (Trek Bicycle Corporation/USA), that gave bikes to Lance Armstrong, says that each detail of clothes, bike framework and human physiology is constantly studied. a) Exist now bicycles of fiber of carbon (high mechanical resistance, low density, great resistance to external agents), but slight that the aluminum and stronger that the steel, supplying of little weight and enormous rigidity framework b) Bill Duehring (Felt), says that aerodynamic design of wheels, handboards, helms, and skin-suited clothes, has allow the cyclists to advance for areas of minimum resistance. Allen Lim, physiologist of the Garmin-Chipolte-H30 team, adds that slight bike frameworks mark the difference when climbing hills.c) Before, riders changed speeds moving levers stuck to cables that mobilized different positions of wheel gear (friction system). In 1985, Shimano American Corporation, introduced the index shifting that achieves a more precise control during climbing with alone to move a connected lever to wheels. During the final stage (1989), of the time trial, the American Greg LeMond defeated the French Laurent Fignon for 58 seconds, using up-to-date handboards, helmet and sun eyeglasses that provided him a more comfortable aerodynamic position.
