WORLD FOOD SCARCITY

If as estimated, the 2050, the world population reaches the figure of 9 billions, without changes in the global alimentary politics, the world will be in problems. By fortune, these have been detected and also their possible solutions. Until recently, many thought that when increasing production of foods, the costs would descend. But for the expert in foods Tim Lang -the fact that the current reality shows the opposite- reveals that the previous outline should be revised keeping in mind added variables (sky-rocketing environmental costs, crops failures, food economy based only on oil, scarcity of water, growing urbanization).

1) One solution is to use genetic modified foods (GM), beginning with Africa, Asia and certain Latin American countries. More foods would be harvested using less earth. The voices against this proposal come from developed countries - today, seemingly without problems- Although GM, attempts against biodiversity, solution to this impasse would come from an appropriate political regulation. At last, biodiversity should not be protected, but replaced by a different way of production of foods and use of land.
2) Goverments should give facilities for a growing use of home biocrops with which we also would recover appropriate diets.
3) Great part of the current food economy depends on oil, cause of volatility of food prices in the markets.
4) 50% of foods imported by England comes from countries with problems of supply of water.
5) Finally, the problem of urbanization. If all live in the city who will produce foods?.

SCIENCE and PHILOSOPHY : DAVID HUME

Although the remarkable empirist Scottish philosopher David Hume, (Treaty of the Human Nature [1737] modified later to Treaty of the Human Understanding), is not outstanding figure in current epistemology, some of his ideas taxes float vivaciously still, in scientific properties. Let us see: 1) In spite of being an empirist, Hume established priorities regarding the generation of knowledge, among the coming from the external world (sensations, impressions) and what happens in our consciences. For Hume, external objects are known by us, for the perceptions that they cause. Nevertheless and at the last, the reality of the external world is doubtful. The important thing is the processed sensations in our consciences.

2) according to Hume, the imprinting of sensations in our consciences, contributes to give for sitting the existence of an objective external world, in certain scientists. Nevertheless, many science’s foundations are based on ideas (cause/effect, space/time), ideas not generated by previous sensations, fact that has generated doubts in certain philosophers around the existence of an external objective world. For the Scottish philosopher, the acceptance of ideas generated in our consciences (mathematical and other theorems), on the part of scientific community is carried out more for a faith question ("states of the soul"), that for objective rationality. 3) the relationship cause/effect (succession accepted more by habit) and other dogmas so valuable in scientific properties are questioned, by Hume because they are mental creations, feasible of being replaced for other, alternatives.

CIENCIA Y FILOSOFIA: DAVID HUME

ADAPTATIVE EYEGLASSES

In 1985, Josh Silver professor of Physics of the University of Oxford, devised self-corregibles optic eyeglasses, building them in the following way: to the interior of the structure of plastic eyeglasses were inserted 2 circular sacks full with liquid, each one connected to small syringes stuck to each arm of the eyeglasses. The user adjusts a dial of the syringe adding or reducing liquid in the membrane, changing the power of eyeglasses. When the user feels satisfied with the force of each lens, the membrane is sealed rotating a small nut and removing the syringes. Silver, seeks to build 1 billion eyeglasses up to the 2020, to distribute them in 15 poor countries to 1 dollar, each couple.

LENTES REAJUSTABLES

HYPNOSIS : ANOTHER PLANE of CONCIOUSNESS?

Among the effects induced by hypnosis exist the possibility of curing certain illnesses, being important to this aim, to understand its functional mechanism. Hypnosis is a sui generis state of deep mental trance -induced or self-induced- with organized patterns of suggestions, usually verbal. During the trance -the subjects don't dream- they are awake listening carefully the voice, obeying its commands. Hypnosis induces changes in subjective experience, alterations in the perception, sensation, emotion, thought or behavior, facilitating body changes and even cure of certain illnesses. Nevertheless Michael Nash, described in the 2001, certain side-effects, when pointing out that hypnosis is capable of creating temporarily hallucinations, compulsions and absent memoirs, soon after finishing the trance state. Nicholas Spanos (U.Carleton/Ontario), assures that hypnotic procedures influence the behavior indirectly, altering the subject's motivations. Pierre Janet, says that during hypnosis happens a dissociation of the conscience, thanks to which certain areas that control individual behaviour, are separated from ordinary conscience. To remove certain control of the conscious mind, would allow an individual to respond with autonomous, reflexive behaviours.

After analyzing frmi images, John Gruzelier proved that subjects highly susceptible to hypnosis, showed great cerebral activity in the anterior cingulate girus and in the left prefrontal cortex. Certain theory, sustains that hypnotist uses messages similar to radio signals, selecting those that are not affected by interferences. Joseph Green (U/Ohio State), agrees in that hypnosis is an altered state of the conscience, because it differs in quality from the ordinary conscience, being carried out impossible things (certain cures), in state of awareness. For Milton Erickson, hypnosis has unique signals: posthipnótic amnesia and literalism (answers: yes-not). According to Martin Orne, hypnotized subjects also experience logical trances (sustain at the same time, 2 ideas mutually inconsistents).

SCIENTIFIC BREAKTROUGH of 2008.

In one article, we estimate that reprogramming adult cells toward pluripotent cells, achieved by Shinya Yamanaka (U. Kyoto/Japón. Cell), was a serious candidate to scientific breaktrough of the year 2008. Although last week, Science proposed 10 pre-candidates at the end -cell reprogramming- to which Science dedicated several comments and videos, won the prize. In one video, the scientific correspondent Gretchen Vogel, Shinya Yamanaka and George Daley (Harvard University), expressed their thoughts in documented, precise and visionary form. Vogel, speaks of 2 culminating events: a) The discovery on the part of James A Thomson, that human embryonic cells (stem cells), could be cultivated and stay alive and b) the discovery of cell reprogramming, according to which human adult cells -by means of insertion and combination of 4 genes- become induced pluripotent cells (iPS cells), able to become in any human cellular type. According to Yamanaka the idea came him after critical analysis of clonatión of frogs and mammals : "When I saw an embryo [in the microscope], I realized that there was little difference between it and my daughters…then I thought that I could not destroy embryos to investigate…"

Daley, admits that cell reprogramming will allow to obtain cellular models of illnesses (Diabetes, Parkinson, anemia of Fanconi, Syndrome fragile -X-, valuations of drugs, toxicological effects) and potential therapies, without immune rejection. According to Vogel, the technique overcomes ethical problems (embryos were killed before, to obtain human embryonic cells) and, until political. Yamanaka agrees that they are still in the beginning and that many aspects of reprogramming are not very well-known. Vogel and Daley add that although iPS cells are similar to stem cells, some differences exist among them. Vogel foresee a derived breaktrough: researchers of HSCI/Harvard (Doug Melton and Qiao Zhou), have just obtained adult beta cells producers of insulin, starting directly from other adult exocrine cells of rats (direct reprogramming), without using iPS cells.

BRAIN PACEMAKERr

While normal brain cells communicate among them using electrical impulses, during deep brain-stimulation (DBS), a battery implanted in the chest provides sustained electrical pulses to specific brain areas, interrupting or correcting dysfunctional electrical activity, being possible to alter the speed, strength and length of such pulses. With this procedure are treated successfully until now more than 35 000 people in 250 U.S. hospitals affected of diseases like Parkinson's, chronic pain, anorexia, obesity, child ystonia, Tourette's syndrome and depression. It is a brain pacemaker that includes a section implanted in the chest and another (1 or 2 wires), inserted deep in the brain. Pulses of electricity are sent from the battery to 4 electrodes located on the tip of each brain wire, providing instantaneous relief. If the electrodes are not working they can be removed, a procedure that can cause bleeding (1-3%), strokes and treatable infections. The pioneers (1950) of the technique: Natalia Bechtereva (USSR), Robert Heath (Tulane University) and J. Lawrence (Neurological Institute of New York (1950-60), initially treated acute and chronic pain. Today by sending fast brain pulses it is possible to alleviate severe cases of Parkinson. The success rate of this procedure ranges between 70-100%.
MARCAPASO CEREBRAL

INDIA SCIENCE'S LESSONS

Although moon orbit’s setting of probe Chandrayaan-1 speaks well of Hindu science, not all that that shines there is gold. Shashi Tharoor, says that the Technological Institute (IIT), of India, has produced the finest minds in the America's Silicon Valley and more than 1000 Fortune corporations. Although India has been incapáble of retaining its more brilliant stars, Subramaniam Ananthakrishnan, former director of National Centers for Radiate Astrophysics in Pune, says that India fights for solid constructions in basic science, education and research. India reminds to Jawaharlal Nehru, impeller of nuclear research, space technology and founder of the first IITs. The real thing is that India has developed applied science, but not basic. For that reason from 2006, indian government have created 5 Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs), gifted each one with 100 million dollars for the next 5 years. It is also planned to put on in orbit a satellite for astrophysic observations and a telescope of gamma rays of 21 m in the Himalaya.

With regard to state Hindu universities, these like most Latin-americans and peruvians universities don't teach basic science. In them teach academics with old knowledge and swarm bureaucrats and political unable to generate own science. While this happens in India and Peru, the Chilean government try to pass a historical bill to invite to the retirement to 4600 academics and officials of state universities in order to attract to this facilities to excellence researchers. It is tried this way to give an exit worthy to these people, trying to attract to academic with doctorates or equivalent grades, increasing the productivity in these state centers.

NO BIG BANG?

Although until recently it was almost impossible to imagine it, in the last years have emerged more hypothesis around what happened before -in the moment - and soon after of the genesis of our universe. Hypothesis built with mathematics that combine Einstein theory of gravity with quantum mechanics. Today, few think in points of infinite density (big bang). The followers of quantum cosmology (LQC), postulate self-recycled universes thanks to eternal expansions and contractions, without beginning neither final. In computer simulations, Abhay Ashketar, noticed that our universe doesn't reach the singularity ; rather it bounces and expands, in infinite form.

In 1980s, Ashtekar, Lee Smolin and Carlo Rovelli, argued that the structure of space-time was interwoven with nets of lines of gravity fields, divisible in quantas (10-35 squared m). Until recently, cosmologists feared the singularities because its mathematics were frustrating and its gravity : infinite. Nevertheless soon they would find maths to cope with this quantum universe finding that the singularity dissapear. According to M. Bojowald, this happens for the emergency of a repulsive force developed in areas of space time containing hiperdensities located in spaces of the size of a proton. The compressed space exercises a force toward defeating the gravity. Finally, the theory postulates the existence of stars and galaxies, before the big bang.

NO BIG BANG?

NEW PHYSIC?

While we watched a argentinian video of TN, we perceived the happiness of several argentinian scientists gathered around the offices of the newly inaugurated Auger observatory. Although many look older and used costumes so simple, we feel into them a great enthusiasm for having detected several cosmic particles in the last 2 years, according to them coming from the galaxy Alpha Centauri. The Auger, built with financial support from 17 countries, prides itself on being cheap and succesful. While the CERN cost billions of dollars and fails constantly, the Auger cost just $ 50 million. Yet both are working the same theme -high-energy particles- with the difference that those obtained in the Auger have higher energies (1020 EeV: hundreds of billions of billions of electrovolts, surpassing the GZK limit), than that obtained by the CERN. Argentine newspapers say their returnees scientifics remain without the opportunities they deserve. One thinks that Auger is a great opportunity for them.

The Auger functions starts at 100%, in argentinian pampas analyzing shower of cosmic particles measuring their energies, capturing their fluorescent light emitted after they excite the N during their clash against the atmosphere and land captured with the help of 1600 Cherenkov detectors (ultrapure water, which measures the flow of energy of electrons, photons, and muons). 4 stations each equipped with 6 telescopes detected the fluorescent light. Above the 1019 EeV, the frequency of fall of particles in the Earth's atmosphere is 1 per km2 per year, while 100 eV, is less than 1 per km2, particle each/100 years. Some particles reach the earth spreading up into 20 km2. For that reason, the Auger study cosmic ray beam over large areas (the size of Paris). With this hybrid detector is expected to answer certain questions: do these particles come from black holes? Represent they traces of dark matter of the universe? Will they change the standard model of physics of subatomic particles? Why they reach so extreme energies?.
NUEVA FISICA?

HOW WORKS the BRAIN (III)

Supplementing Steve Pinker’s theory about how the brain works, emerges another that gives theoretical details of how one reasons, works memory, perception, learning, attention, emotions. Karl Friston and colleagues (U.Collegue/London), have elaborated a Great unified theory about how operate the brain, proposing a probabilistic bayesian brain, that constantly makes predictions about the world updating its data according to that perceived by senses. When somebody see something, he estimates the distance inside a range of possible values based on previous experience, that he changes when new and outstanding information arrives, inferentially optimizing the models of the present and of the future. When we talk somebody, the brain predicts what he will listen, constantly revising its predictions.

Soon after works with Geoffrey Hinton (1990), Friston incorporated to his great unified theory, the concept of free energy (difference between total energy of the system and useless energy: entropy), adapting it to the difference among the predictions made by an artificial neural network and what perceived by our senses at the moment. According to Friston to reduce the errors of perception, the brain appeals to 2 alternatives: changes their prediction or changes the way in which it gathers environmental perceptions. A quantum brain as foresaw Roger Penrose. Example of this is neural plasticity that alters networks and internal connections, thanks to previous experiences. Grace to the use of functional magnetic resonance, Friston explains the stop of neural firing after great and prolonged activity, the patterns of activation of mirror neurons which could reflect what we think, the hierarchical anatomy of the córtex, the mechanisms of psychological disorders caused by faulty connections of the córtex (schizophrenia) and the true nature of the human conscience.

HOW WORKS the BRAIN (II)

As it is known, using predictable computer software programs (DNA’s methylation = transcriptional gene silence/absence of methylation = activity of genes), embryonic human stem cells get specialization in different cellular types, as the embryo is developed. Now it happens that formation of long term memory also requires methylation (chemical covalent modification of the DNA, catalyzed by DNA metiltransferasas:DNMTs), solving the mystery of the memory, as long as sinapsis or neurons that supposedly stored them are renewed day by day and supporting the position that humans when being born carry an innate cultural baggage, inheritance of the species and of their progenitors.

An investigation in rats, carried out by Courtney Miller and David Sweatt (University of Alabama/Birmingham), showed that DNA’s methylation controls the activity from the genes when promoting or inhibiting the formation of memoirs, finding that methyl groups form chemical layers in the DNA preserving memoirs. Also, they demonstrated that the blockade of DNMTs, annulled the formation of memoirs, concluding that adult DNA’s methylation in the nervous system is an epigenetic regulation, beyond the inherent regulation to the structure of the own genes. Sweatt sustains that a bad epigenetic regulation of DNA’s methylation, conditions schizophrenia, mental backwaedness, cancer, autism and so on.

SEARCH of EXTRATERRESTRIAL CIVILIZATIONS

For 50 years, some scientists suggest that alternatively to the search for radio messages (SETI), issued by extraterrestrial civilizations, we should attempt to capture signals of its technological capabilities (megascale engineering). Although at the moment and to a distance of 1,000 light-years there are no signs of this, the search continues. Freeman Dyson, hinted a few decades ago that pressures of population and energy demands would urge to extraterrestrial civilizations to dismantle neighbors planets placing its debris circumferentially around the sun, the way of massive solar collectors, able to block all or part of visible and ultraviolet light. Today it is thought that instead of planetary debris could be employed large numbers of metal tiles, placed in orbit around the sun forming a huge spheric area, whose radius would be equal to a planetary orbit or equivalents based on the reach of optimal solar energy.

Thus, the inside of the resulting sphere would receive 100% of solar energy permitting its inhabitants to live in a comfortable way and taking plenty of room to live. By comparison, the Earth has an area of 789 million square miles, while such sphere can be 252 quadrillions square miles. Although from the outside that area would not be visible, its heated interior would radiate infrared light, detectable from Earth. Dyson has suggested seeking such features on celestial bodies and thus detect advanced extraterrestrial civilizations. After reviewing more than 10,000 infrared spectra taken by the infrared astronomical satellite IRAS, Richard Carrigan has identified 33 potential areas, 4 of which are the best. Another way to identify them are the images coming from the NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope (Spitzer's Glimpse).

BRAIN's AGE

Experiments associated with brain functioning, are cooked for a few decades in major laboratories worldwide. In one of these (Caltech), Matt Wilson, an electrical engineer turned into neuroresearcher, put great steps employing brain-evolutionary concepts advocated by Steven Pinker, who argues that the brain is a modular computer and thoughts sophisticated software in which chips are replaced with symbols and images. 1-In one of his experiments Wilson records (using intracerebral electrodes), visual neuronal sequences interconnections, while a rat drinks milk. After this, Wilson seeks to insert these records in the brains of amnesic rats, bringing Skinner’s ideas to unimaginable levels.

2-For his part Joseph Ledoux, administered electroshocks associated to disturbing noises, causing panic in rats and humans. After this, Ledoux eliminates the panic erasing the recorded brain neural sequences or attenuate panic states associating electroshocks to dopamine infusions. 3- Also, researchers at Caltech, make possible to hungry rats and monkeys to move cursors of computer connected to the levers of liberating food, with only their mental strength. 4-Finally, integrated units of neural circuits of rats (10 000 neurons), are cloned in supercomputers, expecting to clone the entire human brain, when the power of new generations of computers exceeded million teraflops.

HOW THE BRAIN WORKS

How the mind Works is a polemic book from Steven Pinker who attributes to genes certain human tendencies: adultery, altruism, unreasonable fury, which were modelled by the evolution. So, there is not any reason to believe that the evolution that formed our bodies, doesn't find modeling our minds. For Pinker, a human, innate nature exists. We are not a white paper on which the culture will leave its impression. Provocative position because if some are born with certain talents, discrimination and oppression will be legalized and if negative instincts (selfish) exist, social reformations won't exist. Pinker postulates a new humanism, realistic and biologically informed, in which it is necessary to understand (to accept), certain unpleasant desires (domain, infidelity, self-promotion), masculine desire to have multiple sexual partners (more evolutionary, than cultural explanation) and that our mind depends on the activity of our brain. The vision of ourselves should change when we acquire bigger knowledge of brain and mind. The soluctions to our problems will depend in much of our understanding of the human nature.

Pinker sustains that if he were been adopted and educated in the breast of a not very cultivated labor family, he would be making the same thing that he makes now in the intellectual field, because inheritance has a much bigger influence. Separate twins, finish with very similar lives, as long as adoptive siblings, finish as strangers without correlation. Dehumanizing conclusions that depict us, like genetic machines. Of another side, nobody knows how the mind works. Alone we know that it is a group of systems defined more by processes, than for their implementation in particular. It does not care the neurons in short; the neurology is very basic to explain the mind. We are not angels neither demons but formidable products of the nature. This way, alone the exact knowledge of our nature will allow to take wise and real decisions on our future and the way in that we want to live.

COMO TRABAJA EL CEREBRO

How the mind Works

MARS IMAGES 2008

After contemplating images of the Martian surface (Victoria Crater ¿covered by alive lichens?), taken by mobile robotic vehicles (Opportunity) of NASA, we feel some surprise, although more disappointment. It happens that the images are so similar to terrestrial equivalents..... So why endanger human lives by sending manned missions, if the things to be discovered are not so strange?. As if this were not enough, NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter has discovered vast martian glaciers of ice hidden under protective sheets of rock, similar to glacial ice in Antarctica.

There are so many risks for human beings in this kind of trips: human body damage, genetic damage, bad weather, and so on. It is clear then that extraterrestrial explorations should be fully robotic. Only when Mars and other planets will be completely terraformed should we proceed to inhabit these planets. Existen tantos riesgos humanos: fragilidad corporal, daño genetico, clima inadecuado, etc.
