SHORT and LONG TERM MEMORY

We know that our brain reconstructs our past, imagines our future and forge our identity in unconscious form. We arrive to this conclusion thanks to imagenologic procedures and patient amnesiacs' study. Functionally, human memory is the result of synaptic connections among neurons, retaining last experiences. We also know that we have at least 5 systems of multiple memoirs, with a great division among short and long term memory (permanent reinforcement of sinapsis, activation of certain genes and synthesis of proteins). Short term memory stores data for few seconds, when the individual manages information in order to interact with his environment. Long term memory lasts months and years. This last is divided in 4 subsystems. 1) Procedural memory, automatically acquired for repetition (gestures, mental procedures), activated the whole time unconsciously 2) Sensorial memory, warehouses of information coming from the senses.

3) Semantic memory: retains accumulated knowledge (occupation, age, nationality) and to the world. It is encyclopedic and sometimes unconscious. When we speak we use our semantic memory (grammar, vocabulary). 4) Episodic memory unique to humans : stores information referred to knowledge of the world and experiences lived by each person. It allows to remember events of our past consciously, projecting them to the future. We don't know yet how these different memories interact forming our personality. What is sure is that we will continue learning from amnesiacs, autistic, hypoamnésics, hipermnésics, dismnésics, paramnésics and affected from déjà vu, anomalies that affect our memory and identity. It is interesting that our memory can grow during our entire life through episodic memory.

KILLING SPECIFIC CANCEROUS CELLS.

In The Singularity is near (2005,pp:206-258), Ray Kurzweil foresee in a near future the employment of artificial nanobots able to travel for the whole human body carrying anticancerous drugs, eliminating them in specific way with great effectiveness. As it is known, current anticancerous chemotherapy (certainly outmoded), not single kill cancerous cells, but also millions of healthy cells. Beside it, the employment of not well calculated dose (always in excess), generate great body toxicity, to what should be added mutations of cancerous cells generating unexpected resistances to current chemotherapy.

The work of JA MacDiarmid, H Brahmbhatt, et al (EnGeneIC/Sydney), is about to convert the dream of Kurzweil in reality. Australian scientists explore since 2001 the healing effects of siRNAS (small interfering RNA), infusions, genetic remains with capacity to disable any gene, grace to their easy penetration to the interior of cancerous cells. SiRNAs are contained in minicélls (aberrant achrosomes of cell divisións that contains RNA, but lack ability to be replied or to cause infection). SiRNAs contained in minicélls disables first to genes that cause resistance to chemotherapics. After it, they throw a second minicell wave containing 100 times less quantity of chemotherapics (doxorubicin), that conventional treatments, killing specifically cancerous cells, not affecting the normal ones. When minicélls directed by monoclonal antibodies reaches cancerous cells, they are engulfed causing them instantaneous death. The system will be used soon in several hospitals of Melbourne. This work qualifies for scientific breaktrough of the year.
MATANDO ESPECIFICAMENTE, CELULAS CANCEROSAS.

MATURATION of HUMAN HIV VIRUS

Pictures taken from PNAS. Inmature HIV virus (top) and mature virus (down), showing hexagonal blocks and holes.
In a notable work published in the PNAS, John Briggs and Hans-Georg Kräusslich (U. of Heilderberg), show with great accuracy self-assembly processes and propagation of immature virus of AIDS, in the inside of infected people's cells, with help of cryoelectronic tomography-microscopy and 3D transfer-contrast subtomograms. Discoveries: 1) The external protection shell is curve like a ball with multiple superficial, irregular and empty holes, located among hexagonal blocks. A viral gene (Gag), codes hexagonal blocks of this viral external cover. Immature virus has initially a 2D structure, the same one that turn spherical in the measure that more hexagonal blocks are added, induced by 5-kDa Gag poliproteins. Gag proteins form a radial layer under the viral membrane. The activation of viral protease breaks gags producing morphological rearrangements (maturation), required for infectivity. After maturation ribonucleoproteins condenses in the center of the particle, surrounded by a cone structure (capside), that harbors the viral genoma: 2 copies of RNA of a single chain, 9 genes in total.

2) Proteins of viral anchorage, fuse with lymphocyte surface receptors. 3) After the union virus-cell, the viral cápside is introduced into the lymphocyte, liberating its RNA. 4) Viral RNA is coupled to DNA of double chain of cell genome, producing millions of new virus. 5) Immature virus grows near the cellular membrane. The self-assembly last 6 minutes. The rsearchers hope to develop new drugs based on these discoveries.

RENEWABLE ENERGY ON THE WAY

A feat similar to that conducted by the Wright brothers is cooked by the Swiss pilot Bertrand Piccard, descendant from an illustrious family of pioneers. Piccard and André Borschberg intended orbit the earth in a solar plane: Solar impulse, whose prototype is displayed to the public today, near Zurich. The structure of the plane -8 times lighter than any other glider- built with plastic and carbon fiber, has just a few mm thick. It flies at 70 km/h, being the total span of its wings: 61 meters.

The pilots must face the following challenges 1) Cold environment. They will be protected only by a thin wall vidrio.2) A plane’s tilt of only 15 degrees may precipitate the machine to earth. 3) Recovering without sleep flying in night. Since men hallucinate after 3 days without sleep, they will use hypnosis, yoga, meditation and emergency vibrators attached to their jackets. 4) They must be creative because solar cells that feed on day the 4 engines, will be insufficient at night. Piccard hopes that the success of the mission will demonstrate the benefits of renewable energy.

KILLING HIDDEN HIV VIRUS

Based on experiments carried out by Canadian and American researchers, the cure of AIDS, would be near. According to Rafick-Pierre Sékaly lead of the study, the current highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), only control and limit the progression of AIDS, not eradicating it. The virus persists in 2 subsets of infected T-cell memory CD4 + (Central memory :TCM and Transitional memory: TTM), with ability to learn, detect and attack certain infectious diseases. Persistence ensured even if cells divide, by 2 different mechanisms: a) The virus persists primarily in TCM cells in patients with CD4 + reconstituted compartment after receiving HAART, a reservoir with low proliferative rate, eliminated over time and b) A mechanism represented by proviral DNA located in TTM cells of avirémic patients, with low accounts of CD4 + and high proliferation mediated by interleukin 7, mechanism that ensures the persistence of these cells.

Hidden in these reservoir-cells, the virus becomes attached to them: if the cell dies, the virus dies and vice versa, which could lead to a method capable of eradicating HIV infection. Antiretrovirals would fight the circulating virus, while chemotherapy prevent self-renewal and division of memory T-cells proliferating, that host HIV virus. Applying such therapy for an extended period of time, it would be possible to cure the patient.

NEW SCIENTIFIC IDEAS

Max Brockman has collected a serie of essays written by scientists carriers of new ideas: I) Vanessa Woods and Brian Hare, argue that our cooperative social behavior, facilitated the construction of our intelligence. Jason Mitchell, said that language was a powerful vehicle to convey ideas to others. Lera Boroditsky, has written a book that recounts the ways used by native languages to think about basic categories: space, time and color. II) Mirror neurons, an echo of our actions and emotions, permit us to learn from others, to see the world through the eyes of strangers. Christian Keysers, argues that with the help of language, books and TV, today we share a global culture that permeates time and space. III) If mirror neurons are a place of empathy, our brains must bear morality. As technology expands globally, we will soon have a global moral. Joshua Greene, argues that our sense of solidarity, cooperation and survival has also become universal. IV) Laurence Smith, argues that dramatic increases in temperature due to global warming, will urge us to populate higher latitudes (poles), transforming unfit land unfit in other highly productive. Nathan Wolfe suggests to build a global catalogue of all virus, identifying the benefics, improving our understanding of health and illness V) Matthew Lieberman, argues that a better understanding of the structure and function of our brains, will help to eliminate some fixed basic ideas, such as mind-body dualism, established on ancient information coming from separate processes of our bodies and our minds, making us think in 2 different categories.

VI) David Eagleman, argues that our brain carry highly malleable perception. Einstein said that time was a stubborn illusion. Opinion valuable since most physical theories incorporate the time, a filter not reliable. Eagleman thinks that we have a duty to study deeper areas of physics and from our conscience, distinguishing features of external reality and its connection to our brains. VII) Stephon Alexander, believes that dark matter that seems to accelerate the expansion of our universe will be the subject of great study. This scientist believes in a new level of relativity in which the observer and fundamental particles will not be absolute, bringing the matter to create space and space curving on itself will create matter. VIII) A collection that does not touch the core of the next century: the discovery of life on other planets with all its consequences: new diseases, more perfect beings, new medical treatments, new body shapes, to finally reach the conviction that bodies are like passing clothing : I think, therefore I exist.

NUEVAS IDEAS CIENTIFICAS

Pienso, luego existo.

TREPHINATIONS TO IMPROVE COGNITIVE PERFORMANCE

The thickness of the brown arrows indicate the strength of the CSF movements, and shows that trepanation leads to increased movement of CSF around the brain and to the sub-arachnoid spaces (improving nutrient delivery and waste removal), and to less movement of CSF from the brain to the spinal column. Picture, taken from Beckley Foundation.

Certain german neurologist sustained years ago, that if we extirpate the human cranial calvaria, the brain would expand, grace to an increment of the thickness of its cortex. A radical idea, revitalized by the russian Yuri Moskalenko who after to publish in Nature (1960): "Variation in blood volume and oxygen availability in the human brain", begins to sustain that 40 year old (when most people begin to lose their cognitive function) and affected of Alzheimer disease, could be treated with cranial trepinathions that would act by way of diminisher intracranial pressure, valves. For it Moskalenko studied 15 trephinated people due to head injuries, identifying in them a cranial compliance: CC (measure of brain vascular system elasticity), 20 % higher than the average and that a trephination of 4 cm2, increased brain blood flow between 8 and 10%. According to Moskalenko as we age, diminishes the brain blood flow due to loss of cranial elasticity, for normal processes of ossification, what impacts on single individual and on all society.

Above-mentioned ideas allowed Moskalenko to develop a method (MM), based on the Laws of Poiseuille (movements of liquids through vessels and compartments in closed spaces), valuing interrelations among :blood brain, spinal fluid, skull and cerebral tissue, concluding that the grade of cranial elasticity, is the primary determinant of the cerebral circulation. Additional analysis has allowed Moskalenko to discover that brain atrophy that happens after 50-60 years, stabilizes or improves the CC. Finally, all the above-mentioned has allowed Moskalenko to suggest 3 types of therapies to improve CC: I) To carry out vigorous exercises of breathing similar to those practiced in Yoga II) Osteopathic manual manipulation of the skull, favoring brain blood flow, as long as cranial plates are not fused. Moving a fraction is enough to activate the circulation and III) To carry out simple craniotomies or trephinations with the purpose of increasing the index of cranial elasticity and of blood supply among 8-10%.

ORIGIN of LIFE

Beginning with Darwin, continuing with Oparin, Orgel and others, the topic of origin of the life, doesn't finish. F. Crick, suggested that life could have been formed in any planet, arriving later to the earth (panspermy). Now we have 4 new contributions, in this respect. I) According to Jack W Szostak, simple fatty acids existent in the primitive earth, would have formed spheres with double membrane: (protocells), the same ones that would have incorporated more fatty acids and water turning waterproof allowing alone the entrance of necessary nutritious. In such a system, the combination of small molecules would form other bigger ones unable to leave. Nucleótides entrance to these protocélls would precede chemical replicatión. Szostak, David P. Bartel and P. Luigi Luisi, agreed in the 2001 that genetic components and membranes would have evolved generating cells with encapsulated molecules in its interior. John Sutherland, sustains in a paper published in Nature that under appropriate conditions the union of nitrogen bases with sugars was possible conforming units, without necessity of links. II) According to Gerald F Joyce achieved the self-replicatión, the rest is history. This scientist has developed molecules of RNA with replicant capacity. Apart from carrying information the RNA acts like an enzyme promoting chemical reactions. Joyce has developed 2 molecules of RNA able to promote the synthesis of other 4 kinds of nucleótides of RNA, able to pass information in indefinite form, although the system is not alive.

III) The natural synthesis of nucleótides is a reality IV) Another advance is the handedness. The amino acids constituent of proteins are left or right, in same quantities. In alive cells all amino acids are left-handed and sugars and nucleotides : right-handed. Donna Blackmond discovered that a mixture of left and right-handed molecules can become a single form with cooling and melting cycles. Regarding environmental conditions, Günther Wächtershäuser, sustains that life began in volcanic zones in areas of deep seas. Others argue that monoxide of carbon is able to condense in underground surfaces promoting the formation of fatty acids, expelled by geysers. Others sustain that life originated in stagnated waters, where cycles of humidity and evaporation produce useful concentrations and diverse chemical processes. Concerning to the time, Stephen Mojzsis after analyzing rocks of Greenland, concluded that the great bombardment of rocks didn't kill all terraqueous forms of life. Recent analysis of old rocks (zircons), showed that oceans arose 4.404 trillion years ago, hardly 150 million years after the formation of the earth.

ENCELADUS and POSSIBLE FORMS of ORGANIC LIFE

With a subtle, dialectical and unlosable style, Carolyn Porco (Chief of the photographic team of the probe Cassini), dissects in detail the genesis of energy, heat, organic compounds and liquid water in Enceladus, moon of Saturn of hardly 500 km of diameter, postulating from surface cracks and watery geysers photographed in its south pole, the existence of an underground watery lake of 500 m of depth and microorganisms that pick up H and sulfates or, H and CO2, generating methane. Helped Porco’s analysis, photographic pictures (2005), of eruptive plumes of particles of ice, rising hundred of km above the south pole (some form the E ring of Saturn) and many hot superficial cracks (tiger lines), evidences of connection between internal heat and eruption. Besides it, in March of the 2008, were detected: Nitrogen, CO2, CH4, small mixtures of acetylene, ethane, propane, benzene, formaldehyde and other organic compounds that make that Enceladus has 3 conditions to harbor life: liquid water, organic compounds and energy.

The existence of 1 km depth of superficial ice and many underground galleries, explain the actions of internal heat, conditioned by variation of tidal forces, expressed in numerous cracks and moon deformation. With the reversion of the process, the cracks close. The friction between fractured cracks and internal pieces of ice moving against other, generate heat. As long as centrifugal tidal forces are driven preferably toward the ends, the energy is bigger in the south pole, where bigger heating is verified. Being the south pole less viscous is more easily deformable that the rest of the moon. It is thought that liquid water of south pole is denser than ice, having smaller volume.

ARTIFICIAL GENETIC CODE

Researchers of the Scripps Research Institute, led by the biochemical Reza Ghadiri, have built a molecule (tPNA:thioester of nucleic acids), capable of induce the formation of codes of information similar to current genetic-biological. Mixed in water to environmental temperature with unique chains of DNA or RNA, tPNA molecules develop complementary chains spontaneously, completing double helixes, not requiring enzymes, sugars, phosphates or enhancers molecules of chemical reactions, opening the possibility toward the creation of alternating human biologies. Although tPNA, doesn't still achieve self-autoreplication capacity, points toward it. According to Leslie Orgel , coauthor of the paper : “a purely chemical system, has been created capable of developing a Darwinian evolution”. The tPNA, could be the spine on which could anchor many nucleobases, forming an artificial genetic code.

CODIGO GENETICO ARTIFICIAL

EXTRATERRESTRIAL SIGNALS

According to the astronomer and American astrophysicist, Frank Drake, we are not alone in the space: there are 10.000 civilizations in our galaxy, existing 100.000 million of galaxies. Drake, father of the project Seti (search of signals of other worlds), says that it is difficult to detect signals of other civilizations, because we receive their radio waves every 200 years and because their inhabitants would not see with good eyes that we waste our energy, while they preserve it conscientiously. For the same reason, primitive civilizations as ours would be easy to detect. In 1974 Drake, used the radiotelescope of Arecibo/Puerto Rico, to send messages to a star located to 25,000 year-light of our solar system. The Message of Arecibo, explained in numbers the molecule of DNA, the characters of the human genetic code, a summary of our solar system, the location of the Earth and an explanation of our metric system. He also sent messages to aliens in the probes "Pioneer" (1972) and "Voyager" 1977 (greetings in 59 modern languages and an hour and a half of good human music).

According to Drake, it would be a bad news that advanced civilizations than ours professed religious cults. The only suspicion of having captured an extraterrestrial signal happened in 1970, when Jerry R Ehman, captured a brief signal, of intensity 25 during 16 seconds. It will be difficult that aliens attack us because for them it would have a high cost. It is very probable that they are constituted of carbon, although their designs were different. For our part we are well designed: we are biped, we have the head on the shoulders, the eyes near the brain, hands to capture preys. It is probable that to 100 meters the alien seem human, but closely not. More operative maybe to have 4 arms and a distance but near between the mouth and the stomach.

GENES and MEMES

Der Spiegel, interviewed prominent scientists, inquiring for future scientific breakthroughs. Thomas Metzinger (Johannes Gutenberg University/Mainz), cited the inevitability of a growing consumption of pills that will affect our minds (mood, thoughts, psychostimulatión, antidepressants, etc). Also pills to combat dementia, memory loss. Metzinger said that many people want to change the concept of normal state of mind to another level, more rewarding. For suddenly we have the cognitive enhancer Modafinil, Ritalin for concentration and memory, the antidepressant Prozac and some beta-blockers. Reinhard Merkel and Martha Farah, argue that rather than resist this trend, the important is to discuss the necessary policies for their use. Norbert Bolz, assumes that networks will be the backbone of future societies. Bolz believe that in the following decades brain to brain communication will be a reality. First people will carry all information in their clothes, then in their their bodies and finally in their brains. What matters here is accessibility, not human presence.

For Craig Venter and other biologists, will be important to overcome death, gaining eternal life. We have extended the span of our lives, but not the quality. We will use microorganisms to generate renewable energy. We will change the genetic code. We will not treat diseases, we will use preventative techniques against them. We will redesign the human body. First we wil make chromosome transplants, later we will create artificial chromosomes. Although there will be changes in our way of life, at the end we will change the life itself. Richard Dawkins (Oxford University), goes further, he believed will be created chimeras: half human, half chimpanzee and mixed genotypes identifying in this last process some of our common ancestors. According to Martin Bojowald, the use of gravitational waves will go beyond our eyes, we will listen the entire cosmos, even what happened before the Big Bang.

Susan Blackemore, argues that in the beginning were the genes, then the brains and finally the memes, efficient disseminators of ideas, thoughts and words. Today the Internet is creating a new development, acting as selfish replicating copy, without considering the consequences. This is a third type of replicating (Mem), accidentally released. They use humans to make their first stage of copying. The software on the Internet are constantly changing and improving to the point of not needing us. For now, online selection are made by humans, but this begins to change rapidly. Soon will emerge a stae of high-quality copy: Teme (technological memes) and Treme (tertiary meme). When Memes equated the role of genes will emerge Machine-Mem-Gen. Childhood versions of these (boys Tem), will learn at a very early age, increasing early its defenses, reduce their hours of sleep, carryng electronic implants to improve in many areas.

GENES y MEMES

CURVE BALLS

See up: interactive curve balls (New scientist courtesy).

A resource of pitchers is to give a permanent spin to the ball, turning its trajectory, curve. When the ball comes closer, the batsmen see it vertical. When suddenly the ball change of direction, it is difficult to hit it. The psychologist Arthur Shapiro (Bucknell University/Pennsylvania), created an animation of this curved ball, explaining the phenomenon, deserving the award: Visual Illusion of the Year, by the US Vision Sciences Society. When we use our peripheral vision, the brain uses the internal movement of objects (spinning and general direction), to determine how the object is moving. The quick transition (overlap) of central and peripheral vision, explains why curved balls seem to change address, when it is near the batsmen, giving the impression of sudden changes of direction.

BOLAS CURVAS

HUAMAN SKIN GERMS

Instead of to take skin samples and cultivate them, researchers of the Human Genome Research Institute/Bethesda, Maryland, analyzed bacterial genetic sequences (16S ribosomal/RNA), obtained of 20 places of skin of healthy humans, revealing that only places physiologically comparable harbor similar communities. This way, the complexity and stability of bacterial communities depends on specific characteristics of the skin; the same ones that would explain why certain illnesses, agree in certain areas of the human skin, for example : psoriasis and eczema, agree in external and internal elbow, respectively. The skin protects the body from bacteria that influence the health and illness, harboring 19 phylas, that represent 1% of total corporal weight.

In hands, bacterias differ as it is dry or humid areas. The smooth part of the forearms that looks like deserts, harbors the biggest diversity (44 species). The less diverse habitat is located behind the ears. Armpits and groin (looking rainforests), harbor the biggest number of bacteria. In the nose, many germs live in the inner humid area, others in their external oily layer. In general, it is possible to differentiate 3 ecological habitáts: humid (inner of the nose, webbed finger areas, groin), oily (eyebrows and sides of the nose) and dry (palms of hands and buttocks).

Although few people do not want it, many are seeking luck and happiness. Could we aspire to permanently luck?, asked Thomas Metzinger (Johannes-Gutenberg-Universität Mainz), author of the book: Der Ego-Tunnel-Von der Bewusstseinskultur zur Hirnforschung). The certain is that most humans are condemned to pursue luck. The evolution left not other alternative. Surely the first generations of ego-biomachines, were pessimistic and had many problems and severe difficulties in their lives. Therefore, there had to be make a mental change adding luck and joy to work better, in order to improve our lives. We were agents of this change. Most believe that mental pessimism was a sign of wrong mental health. We were turning to positive perspectives, so that the ego-biomachines function better. Then we become lucky-biomachines, to have luck and happiness always. But this change of mind is not over. Today we appreciate the good fortune but also the quality of the values, so we understand that deep truth is equal to luck. A terminal cancer patient under the influence of high dose of morphine improves, becomes positive, works better. It is well to remember that for centuries ago, the ego-biomachines, function with drugs, metaphysical systems or altered states of mind

As the ego is subjective, to improve our fate implies having greater contact with reality. Hence the need for an ego brain tunnel, which connects us with reality, because subjectivity can be deceived (amputed limbs give false perceptions). Would be good to have a new philosophy of the soul based on ethics and neuroscience of consciousness. Can we argue in favor of pessimism?. Metzinger believes that we must prioritize joy and luck, but not permanently settled on hedonist basements, but in columns that can help us overcome our problems, with joy avoiding depression. At this point we must always remember that the hedonistic swirl provided by nature, is the basic engine that keeps our bodies active.

EL TUNEL DEL EGO.

Aunque unos pocos no las desean, muchos buscan suerte y felicidad. ¿podriamos aspirar a tener permanentemente suerte?, pregunta Thomas Metzinger (Johannes Gutenberg- Universität-Mainz), autor del libro : Der Ego- Tunnel–Von der Hirnforschung zur Bewusstseinskultur.

WATER in MARS

-Pictures (above):ESA courtesy.
The European probe Mars Express, took impressive pictures (with the high resolution stereo camera HRSC), of the Hephaestus fossae martian area, the same that suggest the existence of water for many years in the subsurface of Mars. At least that is what suggests the presence of a crater 20 km wide, surrounded by meandering channels, which formerly led fluids.

SUPERSTRING THEORY and REALITY

Abstract from New Scientist
In an unusual turn, creative of superstring theory, bring it near to reality. In 1997, Juan Maldacena (University of Harvard): I) Expand concepts around the "holographic principle" (Gerard 't Hooft/U. of Utrecht-Leonard Susskind/U. Stanford.USA), according to which: "each one will be coded in their two-dimensional credit card, all information required to form a 3D image, not including the gravity". In other words: the 3D space together with the gravity, would be a holographic image generated by interactions of particles in a 2D cosmos. II) Related the behavior of the black holes with quantum theory, appealing to D-branes (superstring theory), those that like black holes, are able to curve big dimensional spaces around them. For it, Maldacena described 2 entirely equivalent holographic ways. a) one, including the gravity and 10 dimensions (5 strongly enrolled and other 5 configured by way of "anti-of-Sitter space": AdS/CFT, bent in mounting horse seat form. b) other, conformed on the edge of a space of 5D: a quantum theoretical field of 4D, without gravity with few extra symmetries, included. A conformal theory, with complete correpondence AdS/CFT, where particles behave in the same way, independently of the energy or scale of longitude with which one studies them. This way, Maldacena connected the string theory with a theory of normal field, with interactions of enormous quantities of particles.
III) In 1988, Maldacena, studied the peculiar behavior of certain types of condensed matter (quark-gluons plasma). To temperatures immensely hot, were break unions of these conglomerates, liberating dense fireballs of quarks and gluons, that act as atoms of gas, with little or any interaction among them (effect predicted by the field theory, of the strong force). In 2005, researchers of the Brookhaven National Laboratory NY colliding among them, ions of gold, creating quark-gluon plasma that acted as a superfluid, without viscosity. IV) Certain physical properties of black holes were approached (entropy and temperature), that would make them behave as liquids and, in higher dimensions, with added viscosity. In 2005, 3 theoretical, calculated the viscosity of a quark-gluon plasma, with holographic equivalent of how a black hole would act, in an anti-of sitter space, absorbing gravity waves, obtaining similar results to those achieved experimentally. In 2007, Sean A Hartnoll, applied the correspondence AdS/CFT to superconductors subjected to high temperatures (electrons flowing without resistance), studying the Nernst effect (magnetic fields and gradients of temperature, applied to a material produce voltages in right angles to both), demonstrating in few lines, correspondence AdS/CFT, with normal theories.

NASA SATELLITAL IMAGES

Pictures taken from NASA.

Serial pictures captured by EOS-Research satellites along 50 years, showing lakes that dry off, forests that disappear, etc., are exhibited in the web page: NASA Earth Observatory, documenting facts that carried out otherwise, would take years. Thanks to the dedication of Yoram Kaufman and David Herring –researchers of the NASA- we can observe them and inform us of human's drastic interventions in their natural habitat. Let us see: I) Among the year 1960-2000, the level of the Aral Sea (Kazakhstan-Uzbekistan), descended dramatically. The Aral that some time was the fourth bigger lake of the world, is hardly today a lagoon of increased salinity, surrounded of dry powder. II) - Growing deforestation of big areas of the province of Rondonia/Amazon, due to the increment of highways and human establishments. III)-The Lake Powell, formerly a recreationa center and big great reservoir of water for Utah, California and Arizona, exhibits today drastically reduced levels of water. IV)- The coasts of Dubai Palm Jumeirah, barely populated the 2000, exhibit today big human establishments, to what is necessary add the construction of a great artificial island, to be populated starting from the 2009.

ANDEAN UPLIFT and NEOTROPICAL FLORA EVOLUTION

Graphics taken from PNAS
Recent studies attribute a big role to Andean uplift, in the extraordinary diversification of the amazon neotropical flora. One hypothesis, based on geological reconstructions, argues that the uplift occurred in discrete periods, from east to west affecting different regions at different times. The assumptions used the family Rubiaceae, native to the African continent (Gondwana/100 million years: Ma), as a representative model several plants. The Rubiaceae first migrated to North America and from there to South America in the Late Paleocene, using vegetal boreotropical corridors and land bridges. The migration was initially restricted to the Caribbean, due to sea levels by up to 50 m.

In South America, the Andean biogeographic patterns formed another long-lasting barrier between northern and central Andes (Andean Western Portal). New marine incursions during the extension of tectonic phases prevented the further spread of plants. Later, during the Middle Miocene, the uplift of the tropical Andes generated a collapse that contributed to the formation of Lake Pebas (17-11 Ma/1 million km2/ with connections to the Caribbean), in the Amazon, which initially also prevented in situ speciation and dispersal of flora between the Andes and the Amazon, for 6 million years. When the uplift of the Eastern Cordillera was completed, the new geography removed the barrier, allowing the dispersal of boreotropical lineages to the south, changing the course (from north to west) to the modern flowing toward the Atlantic, affecting the climate of the region and playing a big role in the evolution of the rich and diverse neotropical flora, traditionally explained in terms of environmental factors.
