SPINAL CORD, TO BE REPAIRED

After a lot of opposition, the biotech-company Geron (USA) has received the approval of FDA, to begin in paraplegic - with acute damage of spinal cord- the first clinical trials with embryonic stem cells (GRNOPC1: hESC-derived oligodendrocytes, based therapy). At the moment (beginnings of 2010), it will be alone a study of security, with a small number of GRNOPC1 cells, to analyze their effects in vivo. Although studies in rodents showed that these move their paralyzed hinds after the treatment, the procedure works better if the lesion is acute, when they have not still been formed nervous scars. It is also known that hESC injected directly in the spinal cord, can produce microscopic cysts, teratomas and or cancer (Catriona Jamieson, U. of California), reason for which, the hESC cells to be used will be completely differentiated.

Methods are tuned to identify substances that transform hESC cells in highly specialized heart muscle cells, being the final objective, the cure of heart attacks by means of direct injections to the heart, of cardiomyocytes matured starting from hESC. If paraplegics begin to walk, the revolution will overcome any previous medical feat (asepsis, vaccines, heart transplants, antibiotics, steroids, etc), with the possibility that soon we will request for catalog, portions of tissues or complete organs to repair damaged tissues. A unique injection of GRNOPC1 will be enough, says Thomas Okarma, Boss of Geron.
MEDULAS ESPINALES REPARADAS

ANCIENT ALIVE FOSSIL

It seems that Peter A. Rona, an oceanographer of Rutgers University is about to capture the oldest living fossil: a descendant of Paleodictyon nodosum that appeared 500 milion years ago during the last Cambrian explosion until 50 million years ago and of which now traces are being found in deep North Atlantic. Associated with Adolf Seilacher, a paleontologist of the Institute of Geology and Paleontology, University of Tubingen, both are trying to catch this orgamism the size of a poker card, of which traces have been found in sedimentary rocks: hundreds of small hexagonal holes, connected to small body tunnels, where they apparently collected microorganisms to eat. Armed with better equipment, both scientists plan to descend 2 miles in a lit minisumergible: the Alvin.

FOSIL VIVO, MAS ANTIGUO

HEART PATCHES

Israelis bioengineers have carried out with success a simple but highly effective therapeutic procedure that will benefit patients that suffer of heart infarcts (death of heart tissue). The procedure supposes the construction of patches of heart tissue starting from neonatal heart cells of rats, mixed with survival and angiogenic factors in a scaffold of macroporous alginate capable of sustaining unions and liberations of mixed factors, during 48 hs. I order the patch acquires mature vasculature it is transplanted in the 3d day to rat’s omentum remaining there 7 days. Then it is explanted and transplanted into infarcted hearts of rats under study. 28 days later the vascularized heart patch showed structural and electric integration to myocardium, generating thicker scars that impede further dilatation of chambers and ventricular dysfunction. A process easy to carry out in humans.

ECCEROBOT

Abstract from New Scientist.
Eccerobot, is a multinational project which aims to make that their robots work in human way. The plastic bones copies of humans, are moved by special wires that look like tendons, while bungee cords simulate muscle movements. After the perfection of the first robots it is expected to interact with the environment in a more humane way. We want to build a "robot anthropomimetic“ acting as a human, says Owen Holland of the University of Sussex/UK, adding that later they will seek to endow their robots of some kind of human artificial intelligence.

1923 : SCIENCE AND THE FUTURE.

Up video:JBS Haldane introducing russian organs revival experiments.
Although edited in 1923: Daedalus; or, Science and the Future, written by the biologist and populational geneticist John Burdon Sanderson Haldane (1892-1964), continues generating polemic. Haldane, defender of the perpetuation and constant improvement of our species -above any current ethical or moral consideration- predicted the emergency of test tube babies (ectogénesis), the sociological-social effects of separation of sexual love and the reproduction, the selection -of elite- of men and women like ancestors of new superior generations to the average, promoting -a way to say it- to musicians of first class with diminished convictions for robbery or crime. Haldane foresaw the scientific control of our passions and the stimulation of our imagination, eliminating our perversions by means of physiology, more than with prison.

Provocative by nature, he sustained that his militant atheism was his only rational support while he carried out experiments, avoiding in such a way, the interference of God, angels or demons. Haldane wrote this article in front of smoky remains of cities populated by each less human beings, after the First World War. With visions that imagined the man like mere parasite of machines to come. According to Haldane the creators will be like Prometheus always interested primarily in the truth. That man's destination will be to conquer the space, its own body, that of other alive beings, until finally to eliminate the entirety of our bad habits and low instincts. The scientist of the future, will look like the loner and neutral figure of Daedalus, conscious and proud of his mission.

1923:LA CIENCIA DEL FUTURO.

Aunque redactado en 1923: Daedalus; or, Science and the Future, escrito por el biólogo y genetista poblacional John Burdon Sanderson Haldane (1892-1964), continúa generando polémica.

ARTIFICIAL MICRORGANISMS

Craig Venter and his team of C.Venter Institute/Rockville/Maryland/US, extracted the total genome of Mycoplasma mycoides, modified it and transplanted it to the bacteria Mycoplasma capricolum, transforming it into a viable Mycoplasma mycoides. As it is known, Venter wants to build genomes of microorganisms able of being used industrially according to necessity (to eliminate petroleum spread in oceans, to produce biodiesel). The present work is a previous step toward the creation of a genome with own design: artificial microbes, to the measure.

Previous to transplant, Venter and his team disabled the enzymes of restriction of Micoplasma capricolum (that generates similar obstacles to that of macrotrasplants), so strange genes were recognized as own. Obviated this obstacle, now will be easy to transplant genes, genomes or microrganisms into strange genomes or bacterias. Combining techniques will be possible now to transplant artificial DNA to other microrganisms that certainly will be viable.

MICRORGANISMOS ARTIFICIALES

LARGER LIFESPAN

In 1960 J B Haldane sustained that fertile people until advanced age, have larger lifespan than their counterparts. In the last years larger lifespans are related to diets restricted in calories (30% less), the same ones that prolong lifespans in worms and mice. According to some biologists such diets in humans would make them have longer lifespan and resistant to many illnesses. The successes achieved in animals allow some biologists to affirm that lifespan is not rigid or immutable. The bristlecone pine lives 5,000 years and some corals 4,000 years. The problem of multicellular organisms (human among them), is the division of cellular functions. Germinal cells in charge of cellular division were assigned to live forever, as long as the somatic ones (dedicated to specialization), became disposables being this the reason for which we die. Not making the hydra, functional distinction among their germinal and somatic cells, she self-regenerate its body parts, indefinitely. This way the possibility to extend the lifespan is feasible. According to Gerald S. Wilkinson the problem in species of long life is to have cells under control, so they don't become cancer.

Now, scientists have discovered unique genes that regulate growth, eating, fertility, energy metabolism and longevity and proteins like sirtuins that when detecting low resource of energy in activated cells, promote effects similar to caloric restriction. At the moment are examined the effects of green tea, the resveratrol, a chemist found in red grapes and some other plants, with powerful antioxidant properties that enhance longevity, rapamycin and others. As it is known body oxidants damage the DNA, the collagen and elastin fibers turning regulation of genes less precise.

MAMMOTH GENOME PROJECT

The geneticist-paleontologist Stephan Schuster (Max Planck Institute for Developmental Biology/University Tübingen), has a dream since 1996 : to reconstruct completely the genome of a woolly mammoth by means of genetic engineering and return him to the life (Mammoth Genome Project), through a clonatión process (reconstructed genome will be inserted in eggs of today elephants). Later he will try to make the same thing with other animals (Tasmania devil, woolly rhinos, Moa and others) and who knows with Neardhentals (starting from chimpanzees) and human-animal hybrids.

The reconstructions of mammoths nuclear and mitochondrial genomes is carried out with fossil hair found in permafrost remains. From 2007 Schuster works with better preserved DNA as long as the keratin of the hair leaves encased harmless DNA. Schuster says that he has already reconstructed 70% of a woolly mammoth genome, an extinguished mammal 10 000 years ago. These studies have allowed to identify a colateral discovery: a highly contagious cancer in the skin of the face of ancient animals, a process in which dermal cancerous cells pass from one animal to other, becoming in tumors.

THOUGHTS EXPERIMENTS

Einstein received the Prize Nobel in 1921 in recognition to his theory around the photoelectric effect; carried out only with pencil and paper, without sophisticated laboratories of last generation. Such theories were called 200 years ago : thoughts experiments, by the Danish Hans Christian Ørsted (1777-1851), influenced by ideas of Kant and of philosophy of Nature. Ørsted is famous because he discovered the existence of a magnetic field around all driver crossed by an electric current. Thoughts experiments are important at the present time since it is necessary a lot of preventive theory regarding space trips. We have predicted in a next future, the superiority of thoughts experiments in front of real experiments, the last ones that soon will be carried out only by technologists.

It is famous the thougt experiment of Lucrecio (Of Rerum Nature): if a self-propelled arrow rushed to space doesn't return, the space is infinite. If we walk for the border of an one-dimension circle it is infinite, being nevertheless finite. Judith Jarvis Thompson argued that a fetus is an innocent person with right to life. Therefore abortion is an immoral act. Thoughts experiments can support a theory or to deny it when contradicting it. The lawyers that defend their clients prefix alternative evidences that put in doubt the facts. Newton speculates about a ball rushed very far that at the end would be curved returning to the starting point (whenever it didn't have obstacles), just as motions made by the moon. Thomas Kuhn (A Function for Thought Experiments), argues that a well conceived thought experiment creates an anomaly in any paradigm. John D Norton adduces that a thought experiment is an argument, because part of premises based on experience, continuing with inductive and deductive rules of inference. If these last finally are connected to new knowledge coupled to natural laws, they can gestate knowledge a priori, as long as parallelisms exist among objectively existent abstract entities.

EXPERIMENTOS MENTALES

HUMAN TIME- SPATIAL ORIENTATION

In a previous note we informed that confined and isolated astronauts in the 105 days Mars500 experiment (inside a capsule that simulated trip to Mars),thought they remained there only 15 days, due to perceptual changes induced by lack of sunlight, night-day changes and others. Now the space psychologist Colin Ellard (University of Waterloo/US), explains in his book You Are Here, that human time-spatial perception is a simplistic evolutionary trick that helps our memories, although many of such simplifications are not real. Our brain aligned non aligned lines, shapes straight lines where previously were curved and joined scattered things, virtual tricks that sometimes cause us to lose, especially in big cities like London, Hong Kong, Paris or Beijing.

Unlike bees, mice and other animals that require exact geometric representations of geographic spaces (otherwise they could not return to their nests or escape from fierce predators). African desert ant, which travels great distances in search of food, use a solar compass embedded in their eyes and keep track of her steps with an odometer. Other animals are designed to detect the Earth's magnetic field. Humans have replaced these animal abilities for other cognitive accommodations. We planned and imagine spaces; build our own space-time, places and time because it is very easy.

ORIENTACION TEMPORO-ESPACIAL HUMANA

BLOCKING THE INMUNE RESPONSE

An investigation carried out in Argentina, led by Juan Gabriel Ravinovich-Ilarregui Martin and others (Conycet-UBA), could become the scientific breaktrough of the year. With this and other works they can perhaps will be the winners of the next Nobel Prize (in Immunology). We learned the news through Nora Bär excellent chronicle in the newspaper La Nacion. Argentine scientists have been working on mechanisms that silence the human immune response and the consequences of it, rather than on activation of the immune response, worked intensively at least until now, in developed countries.

Normally dentrític cells (DCs) -generated in the bone marrow- patrol the body and when detect a tumor or bacteria present a particle of these to lymph node T cells, triggering an inflammatory immune response that eliminates the bacteria or tumor. It happens that sometimes the bacteria or tumors produce high amounts of galectin-1 a protein that attenuates the inflammatory response in experimental acute and chronic immune inducing tolerance or silencing the immune response. Then the DCs changes his aggressive response by another rather regulatory dependent of interleukin 27 (IL-27), promoter of T cell tolerance, helped by IL-10. Without completely silenced its functions, the new circuit is not completely silent, continuing to exercise their inmune functions altough distorted, allowing autoimmune responses (multiple sclerosis, arthritis or diabetes) or brewing tumors. The work seems to have broad therapeutic implications in immunopatology.

CARNIVOROUS PLANTS

New species of meat-eating plants that can gobble giant rats have been found in high altitude areas in central Philippines on the island of Palawan. One has been named called Nepenthes attenboroughii as the English broadcaster David Attenborough. The plants inhabit areas of 1600 m above sea level. Some have sticky surfaces, closing its leaves when the prey is inside. They have also cup-shaped structures within which are trapped insects and other animals.

GENES AND SCHIZOPHRENIA

It is argued that nature (genes) and nurture (social, environment) contribute 50-50 to potential development of schizophrenia. 1% of the population develops schizophrenia during their lives, living in a distorted, changing world, with auditory hallucinations and delusions. I) Respect to social factors, it is argued that the separation (broken family),of one or 2 parents before children are 16 years is an important causal factor. Other factors are discrimination and family disruption of migrants in lands other than their own.

Concerning natura II) 3 articles published in Nature realize the potential of several genes in conditioning schizophrenia. Although not able to discern specific genes to generate such susceptibility, one article establishes a causal relationship with a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in chromosome 6 of Major Histocompatibility Complex, in subjects of European ancestry (8.008 with 19.077 cases as controls). A significant association was observed in linkage disequilibrium chromosome 6p22.1, a marker located on upstream neurogranin gene (NRGN) and 11q24.2 a marker in intron 4 of transcription factor 4 (TCF4) in 18q21.2, fact that disrupt pathways involved in brain development, memory and cognition. The other 2 papers state that in the presence of previous genetic markers the risk of schizophrenia is about 15%.

GENES y ESQUIZOFRENIA

MARS 500

With current means of transport, a round trip to Mars would take 5 years. A long period during which isolation could be a bigger problem. Remember the aggression of a female american astronaut to other, being disputed the love of a male colleague. According to the German astronaut Oliver Knickel that inhabited isolated and without light the capsule Mars500 (Moscow/RSA-IBMP), during 105 days, the worst thing there is the monotony. Accompanied Knickel a French and 4 Russian.

Once boarding the capsule, nobody of out visited them. They woke up to the 7,30 am, beginning the routine with measurements of their biological functions. The whole day they were subjected to psicho-physiologic experiments, blood pressure, urine exams, measurements of EKG and ECG waves before and after trainings. Besides it were carried out feigned emergencies, they ate up prepared food being followed a strict diet, music was listened, films and games were seen. All of them fell asleep with a cap containing 128 electrodes to study brain activity during the sleep. The effect of the isolation was studied on tasks, motivation and performance. In the afternoons each one was in charge of their personal plan. At the end of the day the tripulants sent messages to their relatives, cleaned the module and ate lunch together. They stayed busy the whole day. At nights they were so tired that they were sleeping immediately.

a) To stay even in the capsule, was necessary to have good thoughts assuming that each tripulant would remain until the end. Nobody had negative thoughts. To support the isolation there was the necessity to prefer it to affective knots of their nearer relatives. b) Knickel, lost the notion of the time on the base of long periods. He alone realized that it was night because in certain moment he got tired and had to sleep. He counted 4 weeks when in fact they were 4 months. c) When not using his personal things during their internship, he supposed when leaving that they were few, when in fact they filled a great bag. d) Something remarkable according to Knickel was not to understand why he rarely found somebody in a tunnel of 10 m and 1.2 m of wide (connection between living rooms and bedrooms of the module). In 105 days he alone had to wait once time; remarkable fact if one keeps in mind that each tripulant passed the tunnel around 12 times a day. e) When came closer the day of term of the isolation, the time passed flying. As they didn't see the sky, the light of the day and other, their perceptions of the time varied.

MARS 500

DESIGNER BABIES

Eugenics has a long tradition. The Greeks made natural selection, through sport games. According to Garcilaso de la Vega, the Peruvian Incas isolated disabled in towns near Cusco. Later came attempts by Hitler to establish an Aryan race without flaws. Also attempts of Jean Piaget to understand psychoneuronal bases of learning to improve the performances of children and adolescents and the tomographic brain functional studies, corroborating many of his assumptions. For several years, higher education is provided in prestigious universities to chosen students to lead the world in the future. To previous should be added biotechnological advances starting with the pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD), developed in fertility clinics to detect genetic diseases. The technique removes one cell from an embryonic cluster of 8 cells, analyzing the DNA, establishing whether or not genetic alterations exist.

With this technique, Jeffrey Steinberg (Fertility Institute/Manhattan-LA), determines the sex with 100% certainty. Steinberg argues that his 6 months in selected clinical eye color (80%), hair, freckles and so on. While no laws exist to use the genetic information available, some doctors will seek to create "designer babies", with physical improvements, educational and/or mentally. The idea of improving IQ or intelligence is supported by experiments conducted in 2001, culminating with the creation of the first genetically modified monkey constructed from a fertilized egg not to be inserted a fluorescent jellyfish gene, demonstrating the possibility of inserting genes at will. China is not left behind. The company will try to Shanghai Biochip Corporation this summer analyze DNA from 30 children of 3-12 years, for 5 days while they play. In the saliva samples were analyzed 11 genes, the outcome with athletic ability, memory, art, IQ, emotional control, weight, height, etc. .

Activity that has triggered criticism from bioethicists who accepted procedures to treat disease, but not for aesthetic reasons. Arthur Caplan, Director of the Center for Bioethics/U. of Pennsylvania, has 3 arguments: 1) If there is no disease, which is the best physical feature to select? It is better to have freckles or not?. The answer is subjective conditioned by our culture. 2) It is a business. 3)What if we do not reach our expectations? According to Rob Blinn children need to play, share feelings with their family and parents. The selection of traits will be made by parents, not by babies. A tall child, not necessarily will be a NBA star. Children may not be subject to experiments. There will be bias against unimproved people. Some parents will see their children as things to choose from a catalog. What next: 35 cm penises, big breasts?.

BEBES A PEDIDO

MARS METHANE

video

Since 2003 we have data from the cycle of methane (CH4) on Mars, provided by 3 terrestrial telescopes (which covered 90% of Martian surface) and photos provided by the Mars Express Planetary Fourier Spectrometer (FPS). Martian methane rises 15 km on the equatorial regions of Arabia Terra, Elysium Planum and Arcadia Memnonia, where it reaches concentrations 3 times higher than in other regions. It is believed that methane is generated by: I) Volcanic emission: serpentinisatión (rocks rich in olivine and pyroxene react with water at low temperatures, generating methane), depositing lava on the surface or through subsurface gas releasing (oxidation of iron in basaltic rocks). But Martian methane cycle is not equal to the Earth. It has the peculiarity of being located and produced 600 times more than on Earth and destroyed on their surface in 1 hour, being constantly replenished by geologic processes or by bacterial activity in certain areas. A puzzle because air currents tend to spread the gas. A comprehensive computerized global climate model (which simulates observations of Earth), created by Franck Lefevre and Francois Forget (U/Pierre et Marie Curie/Paris), argues that located martian changes with seasons, being hostile to life. Location explainable only by reactions with oxidants: prtoxyde hydrogen or perchlorates of the soil (Sushil Atreya/U.Michigan).

On the other hand: II) The heat-induced by volcanism could melt large quantities of subsurface ice allowing the existence of life, especially bacteria that feed or produce methane (methanogenic extremophiles), from H and CO2, without need of O. On Earth, methane is released in large quantities for long periods when the ice melts. Peter Dunfield has described a bacteria in an acidic geothermal area of Hell's Gate/New Zealand, which consume methane as the sole source of energy and converts it to CO2. Oxidizing anaerobic bacteria use CH4 as a source of energy and C, attacking CH4 oxygenase. Methanogenic bacteria (Methanobacterium ruminantium, M. thermoautotrophicum, etc), are formed and oxidized to CH4 at the same time, reoxidizing CH4 to CO2.

REGENERATIVE TEETH ALMOST PERFECT

Left:Picture taken from PNAS.

We have communicated previous upgrades notes around surprising reparative mechanisms of tails and members of salamanders and of dental regeneration of rabbits and certain dinosaurs (T. rex), always due to the constant emergency of blastemes (dental germs). Based on it, Japanese scientists have generated completely functional dental substitutions in lacking mature mice of molars teeths, by means of transplants of dental germs built by 3-D genetic engineering and inserted in alveolar bone with lost tooth. The inserted tooth erupted and developed in a new teeth with an almost perfect occlusion. Later analyses showed that the new tooth had correct dental structure, appropriate hardness and answer to noxious stimuli (mechanical stres and pain), etc.

The leader of the study Etsuko Ikeda (U/Tokyo), said that molar eruption was followed and identified by means of a green tint of fluorescein. The dental germs were built with epitelial and mesenchymal cells derived from mice’s embryos, mounted on a drop of collagen and cultivated 5-7 days. Then, the dental germs were implanted in the jaws of mice of 8 weeks to those that had been moved away (3 weeks before) one molar. The dental germs erupted 37-49 days later, being recognized in them: enamel, enamel forming cells, dentin, dentin cells, pulp, blood vessels, roots, cement, etc., besides generation of painful substances in front of appropriate stimuli. Although the molar teeth is not yet perfect, Japanese scientists said that they have yet human volunteers.

DIENTES A VOLUNTAD CASI PERFECTOS

USA HEALTH REFORM

From next week, President Obama, congressmen, support groups and major Democratic U.S. representatives will visit American homes during 6 weeks, trying to sell the benefits of a new democrat health reform, advocated for 75 years and expected decline health spending, to ensure 47 million Americans without coverage, because of the high cost of insurance (though many of them have pre-existing conditions). Health reforms were attempted in Nixon era and during Clinton administration, without success. The opposition represented by conservative and republicans will give a tough battle in places and media, a response that could cause irreparable injury and diminishing popularity of Obama, who argues that health reform is urgent.

The reform seeks to establish a state non-profit insurance program (similar to Peruvian SIS?), which competes with the private sector. Meanwhile Republicans argue that the reform will reduce the quality of health services, increased costs, bureaucracy, taxes that limit the options to choose doctors, copy of socialist systems. To pay the reform it will be require more taxes to middle class and to make budget cuts to Medicare, so that millions of seniors would lose their health coverage. The Democrats contend that Republicans are opposed because they have received contributions from insurance companies. The Obama-Biden reform, intend that insurers accept all applicants, free of charge high premiums due to certain diseases (or chronic) and an assurance with a minimum package of benefits for people with low incomes. It is thought to expand Medicaid to the poor and reduce the payment of hundreds of millions of dollars made by Medicare to hospitals and providers. Some Republicans believe that these steps could induce insurers to withdraw from the market. The reform seeks to eliminate unnecessary tests and procedures (cardiac catheterization and others). Obama says that without health reform the care costs will continue to rise over time.

ANCIENT CLOCK COMPUTER

Last research have established that a rust bronze device, activated by cranks and gears teeth, discovered in 1901 in an old ship on the Greek island of Antikythera (full of bronze statues, potteries and glass artifacts) is been dated to 200 years BC. The computerized clock expressed knowledge of the time: movements of 5 planets known, with the earth in the center, wooble (epicycle) orbits, circular movements of the sun, dates from the biggest games held every 4 years (Isthmia, Olympia, Nemea, Pythia and Naa), predictions of lunar eclipses; representations of an orderly universe).

For the location of the discovery, knowledge of the time in mathematics, physics, astronomy and engineering, the device has been linked to Archimedes of Syracuse (287 years BC-212 BC). In 2008, after an extensive 3-D reconstruction of device’s images, were discovered inscriptions on the back of the device (names of months and the zodiac). The device was protected by a peripheral wooden box, the size of a large dictionary. Although not found diagrams of gear or written explanations, Michael Wright has reconstructed the device (see video), clarifying aspects of its possible performance.

ANTIGUO DISPOSITIVO COMPUTARIZADO

THIRD LEVEL SELF- REPLICATORS

An overflowing Susan Blackmore (Psichology/University of Surrey/To see Video TED), sustains the existence of a third replicator, represented by a series of sophisticated current copying machines. The first replicators (R1), were the genes, base of biological evolution and later the memes (R2), base of cultural evolution. The third replicator (R3)are copying machines that produce lots of copies lightly different to the original ones, few of which survives after being copied. Google copies, copies, varies, varies, selects and select, without help of human, without help of human, in similar way to the work carried out by the genes (to copy, to mute, to select many times).

For genes, we, animals and plants are hardly their simple transporter vehicles. Machines copy, select and recombine the information, sending them to other machines, with slight variants and spontaneous designs. Machines have ended up being self-sufficient. They have grown beyond our control. They serve to the web that every day resembles a broadly interconnected vascular system (billions of PCs, connected in trillions of ways). The entirety Earth threatens to become a replicator of third level, with possibilities of sending information to other galaxies.
