INMUNE CELLS AGAINST CANCER

SEE VIDEO :TUMOR DESTRUCTION (Anderson Cancer Center).

Of the dozens in ways of combatting the cancer, the one that uses own immune cells is promising. It happens sometimes that instead our immune system defends us, opt to attack some of our organs taking them as strange, with devastating consequences for our health. classic example of autoinmune illness is the Lupus systemic eritematous. The task now is to identify cells that attack cancerous cells, being identified recently the immune cells: Th17, in charge of unchaining part of the inflammatory response in diverse autoinmune processes Natalia Martin-Orozco (Anderson Cancer C/Houston/Texas) and colleagues injected concentrated of these cells to mice, being able to knock down melanomas in hardly two 2 weeks. The following steps are to know if this method would work in human, to see the possibility to increase its concentration by means of vaccines and to discover what types and which cancer stages respond.

RESTORED VISION

As it is reported in The Lancet, 12 people affected of congenital amaurosis of Leber (blindness for faulty function of the gene RPE65), improved its vision when the affected eye was treated with reparative genes carried to its subretina by means of adenovirus. This illness causes visual deterioration in youth and total blindness among 30-40 years. The authors of the study Albert M Maguire and Katherine A High (University of Pennsylvania), treated 12 patients (phase 1 trial), showing great improvement those that were among 8-11 years (detected obstacles and were mobilized without asistance). One child of 8 years old achieved a return of the vision almost at normal level, showing that success depended on the biggest or smaller degeneration of the retina, at the moment of treatment. According to some specialists if both eyes were treated, the result would be better. A victory of genetic engineering.

MUMMIFICATION

Although long time has elapsed mummification methods used by Egyptians are not known exactly. In 1994, the total body of a 70 year-old man died of heart attack, was mummified by Ronald Wade (Maryland Medical School) and the egiptólogist Bob Brier (Long Iceland University.), following strictly that described by Heredotus in relation to possible Egyptian techniques. Brier prayed and placed Egyptian amulets to the interior of 9 kgs of fine white bandage.

Now, researchers from Zurich try to reconstruct with varied luck, Egyptian techniques. Frank Rühli (Anatomical Institute/U. of Zurich/Swiss/Mummy Project), mummified the legs of a woman recently deceased based on written descriptions of Heredotus (2500 years B.C.). For it he immersed a leg during 70 days, in 60 kgs of a mixture of salts, in order to dehydrating the leg. Unfortunately, 3 months later the mummification had not been completed: leg and foot were too rigid. Nevertheless the intention of Ruhli, is to see how it is modified the body after mummification, what happens to the DNA and how much the original morphology can be restored after rehydration.

MOMIFICACION

SENSECAM

ViconRevue has developed SenseCam, a photographic camera able to register the entirety of our lives. Initially projected to help post-encephalitis and Alzheimer’s patients to help them to remember important last events, it is projected now like helping artificial memory instead of notebooks and in the cinema. SenseCam takes 30,000 images storing them in a giant memory of 1-gigabyte. Thrown massively the 2010, it will cost $820.

SenseCam, takes pictures passive and automatically every 30 seconds without user's intervention, using an accelerometer and light’ sensors to capture images when the person enters to new environments and an infrared sensor when it detects the hot body of a person near it. After the amnesiac revises the pictures quickly or one for an every 2 days during 3 weeks, they remember better last events. With help of fMRI scan, it has been observed that during the revision of pictures, frontal and cortical brain areas associated to memory, are activated.

THE NATURE OF TECHNOLOGY

The economist, engineer and mathematician Brian Arthur (Intelligent Systems Lab, PARC), author of The Nature of Technology (2009, Simón & Schuster/USA), generates controversy after proposing that technology (less pure and but commercial), leads the land of innovations before the science and economy in a way don't usually thought. The author sustains that everything emerges of technology, existing between this and science a kind of a symbiosis and coevolution. Arthur proposes a theory of technological innovation by means of recombination of existent technologies (combinatorial model), putting as examples of constant innovation to Cambridge (1920) and Silicon Valley.

The author argues that scientific and technological progress is elaborated by independent human geniuses endowed with a deep knowledge of existent technologies, combining them of novo. According to Arthur our wealth and well-being come from technologies in constant change acting the market as arbiter of these innovations. In Silicon Valley, where foreseers usually fail, it is now discussed when will take place the spontaneous emergency of the singularity (artificial intelligence similar to the human one), due to a quick convergence of a growing and exponential number of technological changes (supercomputatión, genes sequencing), before the growing decrease of costs. Finally, Arthur argues that but that to be dominated by autonomous technologies, humans will always control a set of basic technologies that will extend our humanity.

INSERTED NEW MEMORIES

The austrian biologist Gero Miesenböck graduated with highest honors in the same institute where worked Erwin Schrodinger developed today works that in the due time might give him the Nobel Prize in Physics or Medicine. Working at University of Oxford/UK he and his team manipulated neurons of brain’s fruitfly achieving aversion to certain smells (not experienced before), through associative learning mechanisms linking of perception to certain events: proximity of predator, for example).

The researchers injected abundant ATP into brain’s fruitflies modifying certain neuronal receptors, the same as under the effect of laser light flashes released ATP, which by releasing dopamine transmitted from cell to cell, conferred the fly, the memory of an experience that it never had. With the help of a microscope they found that formation of this new memory only needs 12 neurons (those responding to light). To determine whether the inserted memory succeeded the flies moved along a narrow chamber, stopping at the midpoint, to choose between 2 odors, located to the right and left. If the insects avoided the odor paired with laser flash, the experiment was a success. A work that would help improve our understanding of how memories are formed and in the near future perhaps to remove bad memories of certain psychiatric patients or to to manipulate soldiers.

NUEVAS MEMORIAS INSERTADAS

HUMAN EPIGENOME PROJECT

After decoding the human genome (2003), now it is started the Human Epigenome Project (HEP) to establish gene-environment interactions in order to delineate the phenotype without changing the sequence of genetic letters. HEP aims to identify, classify and interpret methylation patterns of genes in all major tissues. Methylation occurs naturally in cytosine base sequences: CpG to control the expression of genes. Differently methylated cytosines give rise to specific patterns of tissue type and disease. Methylated variable positions (MVPs) are common epigenetic markers. A study that will have implications over agriculture, human biology, disease, stem cells, cancer and aging.

The first step in HEP, has just given by Bing Ren, Ryan Lister, Joseph Ecker of the Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, California, to establish significant differences in methylation patterns of totipotent embryonic stem cells and somatic cells. Ecker stated that embryonic stem cells had only 25% of methylated C's not followed by G, while 99.8% of somatic cells were methylated C's followed by G, determining the biochemistry conformation of pluripotency. The complete HEP map will set up all control mechanisms of the human genome, allowing recognition of methylation patterns in disease, aging, nutrition. Eventually a cancer patient might be treated with epigenetic drugs. Also will allow us to understand why humans have so few genes.

PROYECTO EPIGENOMA HUMANO

INADEQUATE MODERN MEN

As he endores in his book : Manthropology. The science of the Inadequate Modern Male, the anthropologist Peter McAllister argues that modern humans because of their inactivity (began with the industrial revolution), has become physically in the worst in history. Footprints of 6 hunters Australian Aborigines (20 000 years ago), printed in bed clays from an Australian lake show that these have reached 37 kph in moist soil and 45 mph on dry land (Bolt's world record: 42 kph/100 planos/9.69 m). Tutsi Men from Rwanda, early this century reached heights of 2.45-252 m in high jump at the beginning of this century according to pictures taken from german anthropologists during initiation ceremonies in trance to adulthood. Neanderthal women have been able to reach 90% of the muscles of Arnold Schwarzenegger in his prime (1970).

HOMBRES MODERNOS, FISICAMENTE INADECUADOS

SUNHEALING

Visit our country the hindu Hira Ratan Manek, in order to explain the properties of watching the sun direct and daily. Hira assures that to contemplate the sun every day among 10" at 45' after its initial rising and one hour before its setting will make that we preserve our health, let us cure and … that we can live without consuming foods. A millennial technique, practiced in the entire world from the antiquity. For Hira, the photosynthesis is not prerogative of vegetables. In our case it is alone that we have left aside it. According to Hira the first day we should contemplate the sun 10", adding 10" every day, in a such way that after 3 months after reaching 15 minutes let us cure our physical wrongs. To six months: 30' and to the 9 months (final of the process), when we contemplate the sun 45', we won't need to eat, because our cells will be adapted to absorb energy of the sun directly, we become a solar panel.

Hira that recommends to watch frontally the sun (photons enter directly to the brain), argues that possible eye damage depends on the biggest or smaller ultraviolet beams presence, minimal if we looks the sun soon after its exit or before its setting. Hira sustains that sun’s watching promotes neuronal multiplication and regeneration. Finally our body content our mind. The material desire believes a lot of suffering. When the desire to eat up goes, other desires are eliminated and the life becomes simple. Hira has practiced fasts of up to 211 days in those that alone he ingested water and juices. After all our body is composed of water in 80% and all that we eat contains but of 50% of water. Finally Hira recommends to ingest 2 liters of water in 24 hours, heated with solar light, maintained to the interior of bottles of natural clay.

MOTHER PASS LEUKEMIA TO HER UNBORN CHILD

Mel Greaves and his team at the Institute of Cancer Research, have discovered something scary, but at the same time promising. There would be some rare cases (17 of leukemia and melanoma in last 100 years) of cancer transmission from sick mothers to their children, in utero. By Advanced genetic fingerprinting technique, they showed that leukemic clones of mother and child shared the same genomic sequences of BCR-ABL1 fusion, single cell origin label. Although in theory the child's immune system should block and stop cancer cells from crossing the placenta, these developed a larger deletion in one copy of chromosome 6p including deletion of HLA alleles, making it impossible for the child's immune system to recognizes them as foreign, leading to new types of treatment to first heal and then protect by vaccination from certain cancers.

NOT SO DEEP IMPACT

Although they continue analyzing videos and spectrophotométric data, everything suggests that the impact of 2 ships (one 4 minutes after the other), it didn't produce enough spread debris on the lunar surface in order to detect water, hydroxyl compounds, salts, clays, hydrated minerals, and organic molecules. Although the first ship (5600 miles/h), hoped to unchain 350 tons of particles of lunar debris up to 10 km high, this was not visible in the images (see video). The instruments of the second ship identified a flash of the initial impact and a crater 20 km wide inserted in a previous crater 100 km wide: the Cabeus. The mission of the NASA known as LCROSS (Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite), consistent of an empty rocket and another small ship were directed toward the lunar south pole. Anthony Colaprete, main researcher of the LCROSS said that we could not trust the images totally. Some think that if the ships collided against rocky surface, the lunar particles would not reach enough height to be detected. Although the absence of lunar gravity could have played a role, it doesn't seem good for this type of missions, to have moon craters as targets.
IMPACTO NO TAN PROFUNDO

9 PRIZE NOBEL WINNERS

What kind of new reflections mobilize the works, lives and yearnings of 9 Prize Nobel winner (PN), 2009 in hard science: Chemistry, Physics and Medicine?. I) Many biological problems threaten to be solved in last instance for physical-chemical nano-procedures. As Venkatraman Ramakrishnan (Physic PN) says: "being a physicist, I derived to biology for obvious reasons". The study of the final structure of the matter: atoms and their interactions, it is what really cares. The understanding of the emergency of lively life starting from proteins, generated from inanimate processes (in ribosomes), responds the question partially, suggesting emergent properties subsequent to the order. In Chemistry, the strong, persistent and meticulous spirit of Ada Yonath (typical of many women) allowed her in spite of the technical limitations of her laboratory, to purify the gross stone (glasses containing ribosomes), until almost to discover the entirety of the structure and function of bigger ribosome subunity.

II) In Physics the great vision represented by the eagle view from the Chinese Charles K. Kao when understanding the techno-social breaktrough that would condition the elevation of the speed and quantity of transmissions using light signals, channeled by ultramiscroscopic glass fibers, transforming our planet into a village. Kao says that sophisticated optic fiber will be stable in the next 1000 years. III) Unless in Medicine highlighted for their tenacity two women Elizabeth Blackburn and Carol Greider that discovered the sequences of telomere and its enzyme telomerasa, the angular stone in this area was represented by the American Jack Szostak (brilliant mind in the right moment), when introducing artificial minichromosomes to prove in a conclusive way the functions of the telomere and its enzyme: shortening or lengthening cellular lifespan. Also the practical spirit of Thomas A. Steitz, when establishing the atomic structure of ribosomes by means of electrons coming from a Synchroton and the help of electronic microscopy.

NOBEL PRIZE CHEMISTRY 2009

Explanation of structure and function of ribosomes as manufacturer of proteins urged the Swedish Academy to grant the Prize Nobel of Chemistry 2009 to the Hindu Venkatraman Ramakrishnan (MRC Laboratory Molecular of Biology/Cambridge/England), the American Thomas A. Steitz (Yale University) and to the Israeli Ada Yonath (Weizmann Institute of Science/ Rehovot/Israel). I) Ribosomes are a RNA-protein complex found in any nucleated cell. Their function is to read genetic blueprint transported by mRNA (RNA messenger), coming from the DNA to produce polipetidic chains (proteins), using amino acids transported by tRNA (transfer RNA), without mistakes. II) In 1970, Yonath deepens ribosome study, experiencing with crystal coming from the bacteria Geobacillus stearothemophilus that survives temperatures of up to 75 °C, that contain great quantity of stable ribosomes, forming better glasses. After irradiating the glass with X-rays she obtained diffraction patterns conformed by millions of points and blobs, coming from the bigger ribosome subunit. Yonath faces 2 problems in the following years: impurity of her crystals and exact interpretation of dots and blobs. Ramakrishnan that for then had decoded the structure of the small subunit, faced the same problem.

III) It would be Steitz, who would solve the problem of dots and arches with help of electronic microscopy, specifying the orientation and ribosome localization in the interior of crystals. The final information of the atomic structure would arrive the 2000, after the employment on the part of Steitz and Ramakrishnan of X-rays coming from the Syncroton of Brookhaven National Laboratory's National Synchrotron Light Source. The same year, Yonath, fourth woman in winning a Prize Nobel of Chemistry publishes her own analysis of the 2 parts of the ribosome. a) These studies will allow to create new antibiotics since to hinder ribosome’s function is equal to kill germs. b) If the ribosomas makes proteins being compound themselves of proteins: which came first? Answer: The RNA learned how to make proteíns.c) Previous studies give a partial answer to the question formulated by Crick and Watson :How the genetic code becomes an alive being?.

PHYSIC PRIZE NOBEL 2009

The Swedish Academy awarded the Physics Prize Nobel 2009 to Charles K. Kao, Willard S. Boyle and George E. Smith for designing the first the mechanisms for transmission of light signals through thousands of transparent and thinner glass fibers of size less than a hair, bonded in cables optic fiber, currently of 125 micrometers in diameter) and the latter for designing the Charge Coupled Device (CCD) semiconductor sensor embedded in digital cameras. In January 1966 Kao working on Standard Telecommunication Laboratories/England, sent a beam of light into thin glass fibers, the same as bouncing off the walls move forward because the refractive index of the innermost part of the fiberglass (now : 10 micrometers in diameter) is higher than its walls. Although the glass was something impure light signals transmitted up to 100 km (until 1960 only reached 20 m). In 1970, Corning Glass Works produced a ultra optic fiber, which changed the information in the past 40 years, globalizing the world of information transmitting phone messages, text, videos, music, internet in a split second.
In 1969 Drs Boyle and Smith, working at Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, NJ, extrapolated ideas of the photoelectric effect explained by A. Einstein (1921), noting that light beams directed against silicon, induced the release of electrons. They came then to create electronic storage. To this aim, particles of light directed against silicon wells, stored detached electrons in small wells (photocells). To more light, more storage of electrons. Subsequently groups of electrons were read one by one. Finally electrons move along tapes being digitally converted into 0s and 1s. Thus CCD electronic imaging sensor converts optical images into electronic signals. A 10-megapixel camera contains 10 million CCDs. Now we have CCDs inserted on telescopes and probes to view the cosmos. Digital cameras photograph deep sea and inner parts of the human body.
PHYSIC PRIZE NOBEL 2009

MEDICINE PRIZE NOBEL 2009

Great consensus existed to grant the Nobel Prize of Medicine and Physiology, 2009 to Elizabeth Blackburn (University of California/Berkeley), Carol Greider (John Hopkins U.) and Jack Szostak Harvard U.) by the discovery of chromosome’s protection during cell division mediated by action of telomere DNA and its enzyme telomerase. A true event that qualifies for scientific breaktrough of the year, having required more than 30 years of studies involving a cilliated unicellular organism, advanced techniques of genetic engineering and brightest minds in the right time.
The Swedish Academy which awards the Prize recognizes the following phases: 1) influence of Muller and McClintock previous works, who recognized chromosome’s protection provided by a unique and repeated sequences of DNA, located in end parts of chromosomes (telomeres) 2) identification of repeated, unique sequences CCCCAA), located in the telomere DNA, with minimal interspecies variations 3) insertion of CCCCAA sequences carried by artificial minichromosomes in yeast cells the same that were protected quickly by internal mechanisms 4) insertion of minichromosomes without CCCCAA telomeric sequences, the same that were rapidly degraded within yeast cells. 5) experiments in other species demonstrating fast aging with shortened telomeres and slow aging in those with adequate lengths of their telomeres 6) recognition that stem and cancer cells have high activity of their enzyme telomerase, which maintain telomeres elongated 7) possible applications: stop telomerase activity in cancer cells 8) to implement techniques in patients with persistent stress, suffering from shortened telomeres.

TRANSCRANIAL ELECTRIC STIMULATION

Like heart studies, brain electric activity is studied for years. It is also known that meditation induces changes in patterns of cerebral electric waves. Based on the precedent thing it is sought to institute electric treatments by means of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) altering the brain function with electric impulses of low voltage, driven by superficial electrodes near the motor cortex. achieving volunteers to execute slow movements, improve their touch or evoke visual perceptions depending of the frequency of electric stimulation. With the variant Alternating Current Transcranial Stimulation (TACS), researchers of the University College London, achieved volunteers to mobilize their arms slowly while struggled to locate circles in screens of PCs. The TACS is non invasive neurotechnology that transfers painless electricity through the intact skull.

The TACS uses alternating sinusoidal current of low voltage: theta (4-8 Hz), alpha (8-14 Hz), beta (14-22 Hz) and gamma (>30 Hz), equalized to intrinsic cerebral rhythm. During experiments brain waves associated to lingering tonic contractions and to those of phase REM (dream stadium), were measured, needing the volunteers 10% of but activity beta before the execution of deliberate movements. In illnesses like Alzheimer, Huntigton, where the activity beta is high the TACS, would be of utility. This technique also improve verbal fluency, cognitive deterioration, chronic pain, tinnitus and will be useful in stroke rehabilitation, schizophrenia, epilepsy and depression. It has few side effects: rare cases of inductions of epileptic attacks, skin rash, etc.
ESTIMULACION TRANSCRANEAL

ARDI

The journal Science has published 11 articles from 47 authors that analyze more than 110 remains of the genus Ardipithecus (4.4 million years), corresponding to 36 individuals, including one called Ardi, who represents a more primitive adult women than Lucy (Australopithecus afarensis: 3, 6 m of years), replacing her in the human branch of primate family. Ardi, female (small canines and thin and small skull) adult, no bigger than a modern chimpanzee, measured 4 feet tall and weighed 120 pounds. According to Gen Suwa which analyzed more than 145 teeth of Ardipithecus, they eat plants, small mammals, nuts and fruits, found in trees and land. Males also had short canines. While walking upright on two feet, their progress was not as efficient as shown by Lucy. Also they had not developed the plantar arch structure like Lucy or the genus Homo. While her hands were equal to extinct monkey, her arms were long with short legs. Her pelvis was transitioning from one adapted to living in trees to another adapted to bipedalism.

According to Tim D. White, leader of the project, the genus Ardipithecus represent a state of initial evolutionary adaptation, being possible that they were the closest ancestors of Australopithecus. Fossil remains of Ardipithecus have been mostly found in cold and wet areas along the Awash River, 45 miles south of Hadar, Ethiopia where was discovered in 1974, Lucy. According to C. O Lovejoy, social system showed little competition between males suggesting the beinning of male cooperation and male-female relations.

ARDI

SETI and SETI@HOME

Why if nobody has listened signals of extraterrestrial intelligence up to now, SETI (Search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence), persist after 50 years of having been founded?: 1) Because each day there are more discovered exoplanets (400 to the date), located at appropriate distances of its suns: neither very cold neither very hot 2) Because there are more disscovered planets containing water and organic compounds. Radiotelescopes have discovered more than 150 molecules (sugars, alcohol, amino acids), in interstellar space. 3) In 1950, the Prize Nobel Enrico Fermi establish this paradox: a great probability of extraterrestrial life exists, but not yet we have detected it. 4) An article published in Nature in 1959, persuaded to the scientific community that extraterrestrial the could not be denied in an absolute way 5) Some as Seth Shostak have predicted the discovery of evidences of extraterrestrial life among the 2020-2025. 6) Duncan Forgan (Edinburgh University), sustains that exist among 360 to 38,000 forms of life with capacity of interstellar communication in some point of our galaxy. Francis' equation Drake (N = N * fp ne fl fi fc FL), suggests the existence of among 2 to 1000 extraterrestrial civilizations in our galaxy.

A bigger problem is the distance. If it is impossible to travel quicker than the speed of the light, it would take thousands of years to store information sent to us. For it some say that we will never see in person to extraterrestrial beings. To arrive to the nearest star would take 100,000 years of trip. SETI, looks for extraterrestrial by means of: a) signals captured by giant radiotelescopes. b) by means of the shipment of human figures, our DNA and solar system and music, to areas located to 21,000 years light containing millions of stars. Some like Friedrich Gauss, suggested to send signs to the space, by means of mirrors or extensive fire areas. c) by means of continuous scrutiny of light or infrared waves or signals captured by radiotelescopes using 5 million people interconnected by means of PC program seti@home.
SETI y SETIHOME
