DIGITAL CROWNS AND BRIDGES PROCEDURES

Abstract from Der spiegel

European managers specially Germans, have begun to manufacture taylorized crowns and dental bridges in massive form -from 1983- using machines and digital technology, with such success that they expect replaces in few years many processes made by hand. Experts say that this procedure is of better quality, but quick (6 hours) and but cheap that others made by hand. The current procedure of leaving a dental bite in silicone molds, is expensive, time consuming and painful. Previous to the production of crowns with machines, it is carried out the conventional impression in silicone by means of a bite, passing the mould to a special camera where it is scanned by laser rays. The PC calculates the form of the mould, being obtained in a minute a recreation of the dental defects and the best possible crown. Fed with powder of the wanted material, it builds the skeleton of the crown in 1 hour, the one that is stabilized by means of heating to 1350 degrees Celsius. Finally, the crown is covered with a layer of special ceramic and carried out the dental adaptation to the user.

In the future it is expected to manufacture crowns and bridges from gold, silver, chromium-cobalt alloys, zirconio and others, difficult to break, using powders of these metals and the laser sintering process (heating of the material to several hundred of degrees Celsius), being obtained bridges of gold in 11/2 hour. Although even in experimental stage, a series of intrabucal scanners hopes to replace the unloved dental impression in silicone. Reflected and projected lasers light applied around the teeth, associated to a software of 3D images of the defect and the wanted crown, hope to convert this process in painless and one of great precision.

PUENTES Y CORONAS DENTALES DIGITALES
