THE TINNIEST TRANSISTOR




7 match atoms could be the transistors (100 times but small than existent ones), of future computers but small and powerful, coming closer to quantum computers of solid state. It is known that a single atom could also act as a transistor. This transistor was created replacing 7 atoms of silica glass for others of phosporus. It is the first transistor to atomic scale says Michelle Simmons (New of South Wales University). It was needed the use of a scanning tunnelling microscope to place phosphorus atoms in its place. Although with certain problems the experiment showed that atoms of silica glasses can be replaced by atoms of different metals.

7 átomos de fósforo podrían conformar los transistores (100 veces mas pequeños que los existentes), de futuras computadoras mas pequeñas y poderosas, acercandonos cada vez mas a computadoras cuánticas de estado sólido. Se sabe que un solo atomo también podría actuar como transistor. Este transistor fué creado reemplazando 7 atomos de un cristal de sílice por otros tantos de fósforo. Se trata del primer transistor a escala atómica, dice Michelle Simmons (University of New South Wales). Se necesitó un scanning tunnelling microscope para colocar los atomos de fosforo, en su lugar. Aunque con ciertos atingencias, el experimento demuestra que atomos de cristales de silice pueden ser reemplazados por atomos de distintos metales.
