SCANNING TUNNELING MICROSCOPES

Employing modified tunneling scanning microscopes, IBM researchers observed processes of individual atoms and the forces that join themselves to velocities 1 million times more rapid than the observed until today. They used short pulses of extremely low voltage to excite individual atoms, continuing later with lowe voltages to read the magnetic status or spin, obtaining behavior data of specific atoms. The potential applications of this technique are in the field of sun energy, data storage, quantum computation. The new tunneling scanning microscopes take images of individual atoms with impressive spatial resolutions, although they lack precision of detailed physical processes that happen very fast (nanoseconds).

Michael Crommie (University of California/Berkeley), hold that these technic will measure the change of atoms in the time, observing the spin to scales of nanoseconds. It is expected that time and space resolution's combination will expedite nanoscience's progress. Structures to nanoscale are the base for magnetic and digital memory systems, making possible the construction of PCs based in mechanical quantum effects. Unlike classical PCs that use a bit for the 1 and another bit for the 0, quantum PC, use a qbit to represent the 1 and the 0, simultaneously, accomplishing unthinkable calculations.

SCANNING TUNNELING MICROSCOPES

Studies accomplished in Ciudad Mexico's University, have noticed for years, the possibility of a sinking of the capital to consequence of floodings and inadequate distribution of wastage waters. The drainage system constituted by old canals is at the point of collapse. For such reason it is build in the Mexican capital the Tunel Emisor Oriente (TEO, the greatest tunnel in the world), to be concluded the 2012. The tunnel has 62 m of length (Ecatepec de Morelos-Tepeji del Rio-Melchor Ocampo), a diameter of 7 m and skylights located to 150-200's m depth. The tunnel has an evacuation’s capability of 150 m3 of water, doubling the present-day capability of drainage. It is hoped than TEO, avoid floodings at the metropolitan zone dislodging wasted and pluvial waters, draining water simultaneously to the central present-day emitter in time of rains and in alternatively way in dry season. It is expected than TEO will give protection to the historic and airport infrastructure. The works are in charge of Water's National Commission (CONAGUA), and guided by Mario Arturo Nocedar Maldonado. It is hoped that after waters were dealt in an especial plant (Planta de Atotonilco), they will be used in agriculture (irrigations).

TUNEL EMISOR ORIENTE

CROSS OF THE RED SEA BY MOSES

Carl Drews and Weiqing Han (Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences/National Center for Atmospheric Research/Colorado University of Boulder), have accomplished a computer simulation’ study that relate the dynamics of strong winds to sea water’s partition in certain areas of the Suez Channel and the east Delta of Nile river during short periods of time. As strong winds blow water moves back, making visible mud and land previously submerged. Phenomenon that perhaps explains the hydrodynamics of the crossing of Red Sea for Moses and his followers, according to Exodus, chapter 14. Drews's and Han's study was focused on certain area of the east delta of the Nile, where an ancient pelusiac branch of the Nile flowed into a coastal lake (Tanis). By means of satellites, Herodoto's maps, models of the area, geological proofs of ancient bathymetry and the historic description of an event with strong winds happened in 1882, made possible to researchers to demonstrate a new hydrodynamic mechanism capable to divide the waters. With uniform coastal winds of 28 m/s the oceanic model produces an exposed land and mud area, where the mouth of the river opens at the lake. The land bridge has 3–4 km in length and 5 km in width remaining open by 4 hours.

NEW PHYSICS?

According to Guido Tonelli (speaker of CMS detector at the Large Hadron Collider :LHC), statistical analysis of billion of particle’s collisions to 7 TeV’s potencies and velocities near the speed light, are discovering physics phenomena of a form not yet observed until now. Perhaps we are speaking of a new physics, a new world. It is worked up to superior energy to the developed for previous colliders. It is like that particles chat each other when they enter and decide what pathway follow as each one run away after smashing. A dynamic mechanism that gives them the best address, something different to the momentum and energy conservation ideas prevailing until today. The findings have generated a lot of debate to know if things were done in correct form or not. It is interesting that the results are similar to the obtained in the US Brookhaven National Laboratory, which use low energy but massive atomic nuclei.

NUEVA FISICA?

DOLPHIN’S INTELLIGENCE

Study of animal intelligence has a special test: self–recognition in a mirror, as chimpanzees do. Now than Diana Reiss (National Aquarium, Baltimore), have checked that dolphins are also capable of self-recognition in front of mirrors, she waits to identify bigger cognitive capabilities in them. Dolphins are animal than although look like fishes, behave like primates and elephants. Dolphins are descendants from terrestrial mammals, artiodactils and hippopotamuses. When Reiss's dolphins look at themselves in mirrors for the first time, they believe are seeing another dolphin. But when their backs are painted with zinc oxide, they turn over instantly to see the marks, which reveals that they think, base to learn many things. Reiss says that they are supersensitive animals that likes to interact with human beings, with which always has had a narrow relation. Dolphins utilize sounds, dance and jumps to communicate among them, to get in touch and to catch up his preys. Also they use ecolocalization (interpretation of echos, that objects around generate).

MANIPULATING INDIVIDUAL IONS

Drawing taken from MIT
Michael Strano and a team of chemical engineers of the MIT (Chang Young Lee, Wonjoon Choi and Jae Hee Han), have managed to flow for empty internal nanospaces with walls latticed with carbon nanotubes (10 000 times as much thin than a hair) ions, one by one. Strano discovered that for these nanochannels (20 000 longer than silica nanochannels), can circulate protons and sodium ions individually once at a time, under certain conditions. Growing C nanotubes in a 1 cm2 plate in which were placed 2 water reservoirs, each one tapped into their respective electrode. Electricity current was generated when protons flowed from one electrode to another. Protons flowed to the electrode charged negatively. Also sodium ions can flow if we applied over them an enough electric field. Being sodium ions big, when traveling they blocked the protons. Nanochannels enable the flow of ions charged positively because their ends contain electrodes that attract positive loads. Strano plans now attract negative ions with positive electrodes. Once these 2 types of channels were constructed, they will be embedded in membranes used for water sea desalinization. Water of oceans are impossible to be ingested because of salt. Present-day methods of desalinization are expensive because require a lot of energy. Membranes coupled to million C nanotubes will separate chloride and sodium ions through less expensive processes. Arsenic and mercury also can be extracted.

MANIPULANDO IONES INDIVIDUALES

BOEING SPACE CAPSULE

Boeing aerospace company plans to build rockets and space capsules to send tourists to the International Space Station (ISS) from 2015. By allying with Space Adventures, lets him the possibility to sell passenger seats up to 7 people on board a space capsule that Boeing is developing. The capsule of Boeing will rival other ferries that carry astronauts or tourists to ISS. It is a safe and affordable transportation for future customers of commercial spaceflight. Charles Simonyi paid more than $ 60 million for 2 trips to the ISS. At the moment all tourists have traveled to the ISS in Soyuz space capsule from the Baikonur Cosmodrome/Kazakhstan. According to President Obama this business must be in the hands of private American companies, Boeing or otherwise. NASA should focus -as Obama said- less in building rockets and more on nurturing the commercial aerospace industry. Boeing and Bigelow Aerospace of Las Vegas won a contract this year for a preliminary development of a capsule to carry 7 passengers to the ISS (to the moon…and then toMars…). With more competition will lower costs.

3-D PRINTING

3-D printing is a fast and easy handling technology of additive manufacture which creates an object in 3-D adding successive layers of material (usually plastic or metal), using 20 options of materials with different physical and mechanical properties simultaneously in a unique process of construction. I) The company Bespoke Innovations designs body parts, prostétic legs, lined with metal or leather, with flexible articulations and body symmetry, to lower costs ($5,000 to $6,000). II) A company of California, employs computer designs to build parts of a house. The advantage of this technique is that it creates personalized goods. III) Other uses are : Reconstruction of fossils, bones and body parts (forensic pathology), reconstruction of organs and body human parts using live cells immersed in gels (bio printing), replies of real objects without molds, furniture, prototypes capable of self-replications (RepRap ), anything.

The machine has resolution in
dpi. The thickness of every constructed layer is 100 micrometer (0,1 mm), the resolution X-Y is comparable to one belonging to laser printers. The particles (3D dots) have around 50-100 micrometers (0.05-0.1 mm) of diameter. The inkjet printing system uses one 3-D file. The software cuts the file in ultra-thin slices that feed a 3D printer forming layers on powder of resins to which is added a binder. The fused deposition modeling (FDM), employee for the company Stratasys, use a structure in which fused polymer is deposited layer by layer. In some cases laser is used to dehydrate the medium and form solid states. Some companies make a choice between powder and polymers like material from which the object emerges.

3-D PRINTING

SEABEDS : REAL GOLDMINES

Following to Russia, France, USA, Japan and India ; China began with strong steps the exploration of the most inaccessible parts of its southern seabeds, near bordering places with nearby countries, in search of natural resources (oil, minerals) and other: information, transmission cables, nuclear lost weapons, sunken submarines, warheads left by missiles essays. Chinese employ a submarine (Jiaolong), size of a little truck linked to a surface nurse ship. Everything began in 2002 when China requested to russians companies the construction of spherical hulls of 7 feet width placed in the center of the submarine where aquanauts (a pilot and 2 technicians), observe marine seabeds through portholes. Aside from specialized tutorship, chineses bought to USA, advanced lights, cameras and articulate arms. Last year the chinese submarine dived 1000 m and this summer to 3.759 m. On 2011 the Jiaolong will dive until 5.000 m and the 2012 will attain its maximum depth. The record of immersion is hold by the Japan's Shinkai 6500 (6.500 m).

CONCENTRATED SUN ENERGY

Michael Strano, Jae Hee Han and Geraldine Paulus (MIT), have built filaments containing million of carbon (C), nanotubes, capable to concentrate sun energy (photons), through a very efficient way. The filaments absorb sun photons, re-emitting them in form of photons of low energy (generating red fluorescence : energy of high intensity/blue-green fluorescence: energy of low intensity). While traditional sun photovoltaic cells generate limited quantity of energy, nanotube's filaments of C, produces 100 times plus energy in the same area. A discovery to be used where concentrated light be needed (night vision, telescopes). Each filament of 10 micrometers on length and 4 of thickness, contain 30 millions C nanotubes arranged in 2 layers (bandgaps), each with different electric, properties to manipulate and concentrate excitons. When a photon hits a material's surface, excite and promotes the ascent of an electron to a high and specific level of energy. The interaction between the energized electron and the internal vacuum of the filament allows to leave behind an exciton and a difference of energy, between the internal vacuum and 2 nanotube layers (strong external bandgap/weak internal bandgap). Excitons behave like a flow of high to low energy: external layer’s excitons flow toward the internal layer, where they exist in states of excited energy of low intensity. When sun energy strikes in permanent form a material, all excitons flow to the center of the filament concentrating there. The goal of this technological advance is to concentrate photons before photovoltaic traditional cells convert them in electric current. Their efficiency will depend on the material used in the electrodes. C nanotubes are cheaper than photovoltaic cells of silica. Strano will try to construct filaments that lose only 1 % of absorbed sun energy.

ENERGIA SOLAR CONCENTRADA

WATSON: LESS CANCER ETHIC’S REGULATIONS

James Dewey Watson (Physiology and Medicine Nobel Prize/1962), sustains during the Inaugural Cancer Lecture/Cork University Research Centre (CCRC): I) Many cancer’s researchers do not carry out a research appropriately for fear to make a mistake. It does not have importance to make a mistake, what import is to try it, although we be right once in a while. II) Being very near to defeat cancer, cancer’s researchers must remember that their principal mission is to save lives, more than simply to research about cancer. III) Present-day cancer research is over-regulated, being blocked many drug trials. A cure that can be identified in 5 years if researchers take more risks, will be delayed 20-30 years. Although many ethic’s committees maintain that nobody must die needlessly during the essays, many patients will die anyway, unless we do something radical. We would advance 5 times more rapid if many ethic’s committees be more flexible in their regulations. IV) Some anti-cancer medicines are right now in use. What happens is that their properties are not yet recognized V) Watson is in favor of establishing minus regulations in cancer clinical essays in order to speed up the process to find a cure for cancer.

HOW SEE THE BRAIN

The storage of imagery in the occipital human cortex, comes true enough in simple form: a convex line or a semicircle with 2 internal points, representing a human being in a hammock or a face, respectively. In the same way, if an object is partially hidden (stand up body of a dog behind vertical fences), the brain reconstructs perceptually the missing pieces, presenting it as a whole visual. An evolutionary ancestral tendency, because our animal forefathers had to search and to detect friends and enemies to the inside of the foliage from scarce visual fragments. The continuity of the object as from his contours are established for the brain when these they are partially dark. If we see a dog's tail moving below the sofa -we inferred logically- his corporal totality. If a dog's head sticks up from for the extreme a piece of furniture, automatically we perceived in amodal way to the dog as a whole, having previously perceived only fragments of his body. If we observed a fast toy train transiting for a short tunnel and emerging on the other side in 1/3 of second, we will see the movement of the train, as it were transparent. If the train is slow (1 minute or more), we will infer that the train entered and left for the other side -logical inference, more than a visual perception-. The tendency to anticipate contours is a brain's surprising property that respond to continuity principle, independently if the process makes sense or not. After constructing an object's two-dimensional borders, the visual cortex process it in 3-D. David H. Hubel and Torsten N. Wiesel (Harvard University), maintain that cells of the visual cerebral cortex respond principally: a) to chiaroscuros borders, delineators of the contours of an object or creature and b) to illusory contours (Rudiger von der Heydt/Johns Hopkins University), using any available information in order to reconstruct the final form, the way just we see it.

B VITAMINS TO DELAY ALZHEIMER

In a very important, double-blind, controlled randomized blind study, british researchers (David Smith et al/Oxford Project to Investigate Memory and Ageing:OPTIMA/University of Oxford), proved that high dose of folate + B12 +B6 vitamin lowered plasmátic homocystein (tHcy) levels, slowing annual brain rate atrophy in 168 patients of 70 years age with Cognitive Moderate Deterioration Impairment (MDI) and incipient signs of Alzheimer's Disease (AD), with volumetric MRI's scans at the beginning and at the end of the study. As it is known raised homocysteín levels are associated with bigger rate of brain atrophy. Raised levels of homocysteine are largely determined by the body’s status of certain B vitamins (folate, B6 and B12), which are cofactors or substrates for enzymes involved in homocysteine metabolism. Usually, after the 60 years, patients with MDI and AD, develops brain atrophy to rates of 1 % and 2.5 % yearly, respectively. After 2 years taking this vitamins complex, the brain shrinkage oscillate between 0,5 % 0,76 % in those that received daily vitamins, compared to 1, 08 % of those that did not receive dietary suplementation. I) Which can be the start of the delay of AD II) Be the first step to preventively take high dose of multi-vitamins after the 60 years age, as Linus Pauling recommended 50 years ago.

VITAMINA B PARA IMPEDIR E. De ALZHEIMER

HOW TO LEARN BEST

For some time, some psychologists argue that in learning there is preferential : visual, auditory, with the left brain or with right brain learning, suggesting that these traits, learning styles, personalities and home-rules must interact and relate to create good study habits. Techniques that can help students from 4th grade to university learners. Let's see: I) In order to improve retention is good to study at least in 2 rooms, instead of one. II) Robert A. Bjork (University of California, Los Angeles), argues that studying a subject from several related angles, is better than to do the same only from a unique angle. The brain performs useful associations consciously and unconsciously, between the studied and real implications. The brain being forced to make multiple associations with the same material creates more neuronal involvement, enriching information and preventing forgetfulness. Varying influences (speaking, reading), as musicians and athletes do, improve the performance. Ideas that according Psychological Science in the Public Interest, unfortunately are not officially supported. Daniel T. Willingham (University of Virginia), maintains that with varied practice, students learn to choose the appropriate procedure, as they would do in a demanding test.

In one experiment published in Psychology and Aging, college students and older adults distinguish better the styles of 12 artists not well known after seeing a mixture of their collections, than after seeing a dozen works made by a single artist. According to Nate Kornell (Williams College), what happens in these cases is that the brain looks subconsciously for deep patterns selecting the similar and different. III) On the other hand Henry L. Roediger III(Washington University), says that when neural networks are packed carefully and gradually retain things longer. IV) Forget and hard examns are a powerful source for learning. Roediger and Jeffrey Karpicke (Washington University), subjected collegue students to read and comprehend certain material for 2 times in short periods of time. When students studied the same material two times responded well, but quickly forget it. But if they studied and then surrendered a test, they retained the learned, 2 and 7 days respectively. V) Motivation is a powerful stimulant of learning.

SYNTHETIC GENOMES

J. Craig Venter Institute and Synthetic Genomics (foundation and company), linked to Craig Venter have lucrative contracts with Exxon Mobil ($ 300 million to design DNA of algae to produce oil and diesel), with BP to study microbe that would convert carbon deposits on natural gas, with the Malaysian conglomerate Genting, to improve yields and profit streams of oil palm, with Novartis, to create synthetic genes that enables to speed up development of flu vaccines. After creating the first synthetic organism in May, Venter now has a greenhouse built by Synthetic Genomics, to perform these kind of research. Always two steps ahead of his competitors, Venter is now trying to write the genetic code, rather than simply read it. At Synthetic Genomics, Venter creates bacteria, algae and plants with DNA designed for industrial work, which eventually would replace the entire petrochemical industry.

Synthetic Genomics provides the possibility of using algae to produce food with meat flavor. The current genetic bioengineering seems increasingly to the work done by programmers of PC software, assembling prefabricated components in different combinations, with DNA produced from chemical components. The final synthetic DNA is transplanted into an existing cell that takes control of all cellular operations. Even the Vatican has recognized these cells as synthetic because synthetic DNA took control of cellular components and because replicating cells gradually took on the characteristics of the original host cell. Although more work is needed several scientists believe that with only a few genetic changes may produce oil. Venter thinks alike, since the ability to produce DNA progresses rapidly. Employers and friends claim that Venter is in the correct direction: if science works, business works and vice versa.

OTRA VEZ, VENTER

HOME MADE ROCKET, FAILED

HOMEMADE ROCKET, FAILED.

The Danish Peter Madsen and Kristian von Bengtson (Copenhagen Suborbitals), attempted yesterday unsuccessfully to launch a rocket (DIY, propelled for a Heat 1X hybrid booster of 210 000 horse-power and fuel of solid polyurethane and liquid oxygen), up to 100 km of altitude. One of the valves that control the flow of cold oxygen failed. The launching's place was located on a marine platform in a military area near to the island Bornholm at Baltic Sea, where military restrictions are diminished. The rocket of 65 cm (costed 40 000 dollars), conditioned a simple capsule of humans’ rescue, to which protective heat shields made with corks, cooling systems of heat and a booster were added. The booster would get rid of at 30 km height, then follow a weightless trajectory until 100 kms of height, returning booster and rocket to The Baltic sea, with help of parachute. The final goal of the launching is to send a human being inside of the rocket, half seated half standing with his head inside a transparent dome so that he may contemplate the Earth from a fantastic height. The Danish will have now that to wait to the 2011 for a new launching.

COHETE HECHO A MANO, NO FUNCIONO

PC VIDEO GAMES

Kathleen Beullens, Keith Roe and Jan Van den Bulck (Catholic University/Belgium), accomplished a study to relate the practice of racing video games sold off by teens (16-17 years old/354 men and women), with later irresponsible conducts (excessive speed, not taking risks into account), in the real world. Excellent player, excellent driver?. The study attempted to predict the development of risky conducts in the future, explained for the content of video games. Questionnaires were sent to 2000 Belgian teens inquiring how often they played. 2 years later when the same teens had driver licenses they were again asked how often they took risks (drinking when they drove, excessive speed). The driving license is obtained at 18 years in Belgium. Although the researchers did not know if the answers were honest, habitually these are sincere if questionnaires are anonymous. Although a statistically significant relation between drinking, high speed and driving was inconsistent at 18, it was showed a significant relation between reckless driving and having practiced video games between 16 and 17 years. Beullens advocates campaigns of security for young people immersed in video games. Although some studies performed in USA deduce that these games improve the vision, decrease phobias and develop altruistic feelings it was demonstrated at the University of Missouri Columbia (2005), that players of violent games had diminished responses to images of real violence. Companies that made computer video games require more analyses before somebody reprove their games.

VIDEO-JUEGOS PELIGROSOS

THE GRAND DESIGN

Incredible, in the last pages of A brief history of the time, Stephen Hawking ( mathematician, astronomer and physicist), proposed the existence of a great creative God, when he wrote : If we got to know all of the equations of the universe, we will know God's Plan, appointment taken like proof of compatibility between Science and Religión for various religious circles. Today in his book of recent appearing: The Grand Design, Hawking take the opposite view, that God was not necessary to create the universe, affirming that the Universe was created spontaneously, because laws like gravity, permit that the universe can be made out of nowhere. That what he wrote when we read the first chapter of his book published in The Times. Something controversial because spontaneous creation means being obtained from something out of nowhere. According to his ex-wife Jane Hawking, when Hawking finished written Brief history of the Time he was an atheistic. The very change of heart has an explanation according to her, it help to sell his books.

EXERCISE and VITAMIN C

Two health-related news deserve this note. I) According to David Servan-Schreiber (Anticancer: A New Way of Life. New York: Viking: 2008) and researchers from the World Cancer Research Fund, walking 30 minutes a day would prevent in part the development of colon and breast cancer by 24% and 23% respectively. Apart from promotion of adequate body weight and calories, regular exercise strengthens the immunity promoting inmunomodulatory activity, immunoglobulin secretion, enhancing leukocyte activity (motility and phagocytosis). It also reduces the excess testosterone and estrogen that stimulate the growth of cancer cells, regulates insulin secretion (cancer cells feed on glucose), decreases the spread of tumor cells. It also reduces the adipose tissue where accumulate carcinogenic toxins and detoxify the body through sweat.

II) The other news emphasizes the benefits of routine daily intake of 200 mg of Vitamin C (high dose of ascorbic acid, present in green leafy vegetables, citrus fruits, tomatoes, melons, etc, as humans lack the ability to synthesize this vitamin. Linus Pauling (Nobel Prize), recommended the intake of megadoses of vitamin C (10g, each day of which only 50% is absorbed). Vitamin C promotes life -not death cell- reverses endothelial dysfunction of blood vessels in patients with coronary disease, providing the body with antioxidative mechanisms, combat lipid peroxidation, protects DNA from damage by free radicals. In rats the injection of high doses of vitamin C, decreases the size of tumors while preserving usual activity of normal cells (National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases/Part of the National Institutes of Health). On the other hand, studies of Fry and Lawson showed that high doses of vitamin C increased production of peroxides, establishing that infused over two hours, three times a week, the vitamin is well tolerated and free of risk.

EJERCICIO y VITAMINA C

I) Según David Servan-Schreiber (Anticancer: A New Way of Life.
