COMPETITIVE GERMAN BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH

Germany strives to be competitive in world medical services through the integration of national hospital services with their universities. To that end since 2009, came into operation the German Centre for Neurodegenerative Disease (DZNE) located in Bonn with 7 associated institutes. Until recently the German biomedical research, its clinics and its associated institutes (Max Planck and Helmholtz Society), not always cooperated with each other, limiting their effectiveness. On November 9 of this year was opened the National Centre for Diabetes Research (DZD) and the German government approved the construction of four additional institutes: cardiovascular, infectious, pulmonary and cancer, to come into operation next year. Each center will receive $ 48 million a year and the DZNE something else.

Scientists of these institutes are free to structure the research. Each center will establish partnerships with universities and local non-university institutes. Once positioned, they can establish other centers outside their local areas. Instead of having 150 patients, the lung institute will now collect all Germany 1000 patients suffering from pulmonary fibrosis, determining specific markers that will help to develop new therapies. The activities of the institutes now have the security of long-term investment, increasing its international visibility. The idea is to have institutions well funded, well organized and decentralized.
INVESTIGACION BIOMEDICA ALEMANA COMPETITIVA
