REASONS TO PERFORM a HEMICRANIECTOMY

The neurosurgeons who care for Gabrielle Giffords have reported that she is capable of performing simple movements of her hands, lift a finger, to understand orders, actions attributed to I) to a left hemicraniectomy performed (removal of bone of the skull with further relocation). A surgical procedure intended to prevent that the severe brain edema compress deadly internal brain structures. Now it remains the second phase II) obviating affected brain areas by the passage of the bullet through the brain and rather stimulating healthy areas. Asked about this kind of accidents, neurosurgeons said that a) the White House press secretary Jim Brady (1981), shot in the brain during the attempted assassination of Ronald Reagan has recovered up 95% to date. b) they think that Giffords will recover brain functions because they have not removed much of her brain tissue and because the brain edema has been succesfully controlled. Also they are confident in the emergence of brain neuroplasticity -brain rewiring and emergence of new neurons and the submission of the congressman to intense physical rehabilitation therapy. Despite this the congressman will face long-term effects: increased risk of epilepsy, depression, Parkinson's disease, dementia.
