DAWKINS and RELIGION

Richard Dawkins argues in his new book "The Greatest Show on Earth", that natural reality is beautiful, understandable and endowed with magical greatness. With this book, Dawkins attempts to avoid the imposition of certain fundamentalist religious ideas which assume that life was designed. Regarding the proposals of Dean Hamer (God Gene hypothesis), who assumes that humans are genetically predisposed to believe in religion, Dawkins argues that rather we are genetically predisposed to adopt certain psychological attributes, that under certain circumstances predispose us to be religious, obedient to some authority -useful in certain circumstances- to be afraid of death, etc.

Indeed, some human societies invigorate themselves with the practice of certain religions. When a tribe has its God of War and their young people believe that their destiny is to fight and die to gain heaven, they fight with all their strength for it. In such cases, it is easy to distinguish enhancer memes. Dawkins argues that evolution and the orbit of the earth around the sun are facts. At one point they were hypothesis, now they are facts, sometimes subject to change. On the other hand there is the possibility that evolution be part of a wider system of thought, as could happen with the possibility of the existence of a variety of extra-planetary life forms. Dawkins is currently finishing a children's book "The Magic of Reality", in which after describing initial myths about certain phenomena, he goes further clarify them with scientific evidence.

Richard Dawkins arguye en su nuevo libro “The Greatest Show on Earth,"que la realidad natural es bella, explicable y está dotada de grandeza mágica. Con este libro Dawkins trata de evitar la imposición de ciertas ideas religiosas fundamentalistas que asumen que la vida ha sido diseñada. Respecto a las proposiciones de Dean Hamer (God Gene hypothesis), que asume que los humanos estamos genéticamente predispuestos a creer en religiones, Dawkins arguye que mas bien estamos genéticamente predispuestos a adoptar ciertos atributos psicológicos, que bajo ciertas circunstancias nos predisponen a ser religiosos, obedientes a cierta autoridad -útil en ciertas circunstancias- a tener miedo a la muerte, etc.

Por cierto, ciertas sociedades humanas se vigorizan con la práctica de ciertas religiones. Cuando una tribu tiene un dios de la Guerra y sus jóvenes creen que su destino es luchar y morir para ganar el cielo, lucharán con todas sus fuerzas por ello. En estos casos, es fácil distinguir memes reforzadores. Dawkins sostiene que la evolución y el orbitar de la tierra alrededor del sol, son hechos. En cierto momento habían sido hipótesis, ahora son hechos, sujetos a veces a modificaciones. De otro lado esta abierta la posibilidad de que la evolución sea parte de un sistema mas amplio de pensamientos, como sucede con la posibilidad de la existencia de una variedad de formas de vida extraplanetaria. Dawkins está terminando de escribir un libro Dawkins está terminando de escribir un libro para niños: "The Magic of Reality", en el que tras describir los mitos iniciales de ciertos fenómenos, pasa a aclararlos con pruebas científicas posteriores.
