ELECTRONIC EPIDERMAL TATTOO







We thought that electronic clothes (jackets, pants, T-shirts), will quickly replace laptops, iPods, cell phones, etc. Contrarily, the novelty is the emergence of electronic epidermic tattoo -forced by necessity- giving priority to the human body against clothing. Scientists from the universities of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, Northwestern University, Evanston, Tufts, Dalian, China and Institute of High Performance Computing, Singapore, have developed an electronic epidermic tattoo capable of measuring the electrical activity generated by the heart, brain and skeletal muscles, also getting enough information to control certain computer games. The electronic epidermic tattoo less than 50 micrometers thick, is embedded in a plastic envelope soluble in water. Having elastic properties, it blends and adheres to the skin by Van der Walls interactions. Their complexity include stress sensors, transistors, light emitting diodes, photodetectors, radio-frequency inductors, capacitors, oscillators and rectifier diodes. Solar cells and wireless devices are the source of its power. The electronic epidermic tattoo -without doubt- will revolutionize the monitoring of critically ill patients and certain computer games. It is cheap because its production is done by mass transfer printing techniques. It takes up little space in contrast to the bulky equipment currently used in hospitals, allowing to monitor premature babies or patients with sleep apnea in their natural environments, up to 24 hours without loss of function or skin irritation. For now it lasts 15 days.

Pensabamos que la ropa electronica (sacos,pantalones, polos, camisas), reemplazarian rapidamente a laptops, Ipods, celulares moviles, etc. La novedad es que la aparicion del tatuaje epidermico electronico -forzado por la necesidad- ha priorizado al cuerpo humano a la ropa. Cientificos de las universidades de Illinois, Urbana-Champaign,
Northwestern University, Evanston, Tufts, Dalian-China y el Institute of High Performance Computing-Singapore, han desarrollado un tatuaje epidermico electronico capaz de medir la actividad electrica generada por el corazon, el cerebro y musculos esqueléticos, obteniendo además suficiente informacion para controlar ciertos juegos de computadora. El tatuaje epidermico electrónico de menos de 50 micrometros de grosor, viene inserto en un sobre de plastico soluble en agua. Teniendo propiedades elásticas, se mimetiza y adhiere a la piel mediante interacciones de Van der Walls. Su complejidad incluye sensores de esfuerzo, transistores, diodos emisores de luz, fotodetectores, inductores de radio-frecuencia, capacitadores, osciladores y diodos rectificadores. Celdas solares y dispositivos inhalambricos son su fuente de poder. El tatuaje epidermico electrónico -que duda cabe- revolucionara el monitoreo de pacientes criticos y ciertos juegos de computadora. Es barato porque su producción se realiza mediante masivas técnicas de transfer printing. Ocupa poco espacio en contraste al voluminoso equipo usado actualmente en los hospitales, permitiendo monitorizar a bebes prematuros o pacientes con apnea del sueño en sus medios naturales, hasta por 24 hs, sin perdida de su funcion o irritacion de la piel. De momento duran 15 dias.
