ELECTRONIC NEURONS AND SYNAPSES

The techno-breaktrough of 2011 could be silicon chips that mimic cognitive neurons and synapses. Created by IBM, these mini-cognitive devices are very close to replicate human brain synaptic connections, rewriting their connections as they encounter new information, similar to how work biological synapses. According to Dharmendra Modha (Synapse Project Manager of IBM), cognitive computers to use these chips will be used to understand human behavior, monitor thousands of environmental variables (sound, temperature, movement) and finally learn. Reverse engineering of the brain will recreate emotions, perceptions, sensation and cognition. Currently, the system uses 2 neurosináptic chips, prototype with 256 computer stations (electronic neurons). A programmable synapse chip has 262 144 synapsis and the other: 65 536 learning synapses. Learning process is finally is to build and strengthen connections, turning up the volume of the system to important signals, and putting less attention to others. According to Richard Cooper (London University), many simple tasks can be performed using associative memories. Chips replicate physical connections using virtual machines. Scientists that think that computers can learn, add these like humans will develop their own consciences. The key to development of these chips is to unify memory and data processing. IBM hopes to build chips with 10 billion neurons and 100 trillion synapses with 1 Kw power, embedded in volumes less than 2 liters.
