X-MEN, CHINESE BOY

Youhui a chinese boy of 8 years old, native of Guanghou (China), surprised the world by having certain catlike visual characteristics: I) If his blue eyes are focused in the dark with a flashlight they glow (possibly due tohunting crickets and read in almost total darkness. Since in these circumstances his pupil (usually a circle), becomes a thin horizontal line (similar to cat, to absorb all the light possible), it is possible that his tapetum lucidum has 200 million or more rods (sensitive cells to light), allowing to increase about 50 times every trace of light. Normal humans have only 120 million rods.

III) If his eyes are focused with blue-green light, his pupils like the cat are split into tight vertical lines, possibly to better control the light entering his eyes. Sure, this is a genetic atavism developed in very ancient Chinese populations, due to constant darkness caused by dust storms, which also conditioned the obliquity of their eyes. Surely, Nong has less cones than normal humans, having only vision for the green, blue and maybe red. In return he must have a large binocular visual field and an extensive view for which he potentially would be an excellent flyer or a football midfielder. reflection of ocular light on the outside by a disproportionate tapetum lucidum. II) He is capable of

NIÑO X-MEN

GIANT SUPERSOLDIERS ANTS.

According to Ehab Abouheif (McGill University / Canada), the ant genus Pheidole, developed from ancient (35-60 million years ago), giant soldier ants with huge jaws and disproportionate heads to plug holes that served as input, preventing entry of enemy ants. With the passage of time, this feature waned, now appearing in certain species at 1/15 000 ants. Abouheif and his team developed a giant soldier ant from a worker ant, to which he administered in the larval stage, high doses of juvenile hormone in a specific time. When a queen leaves an egg, another queen is generated applying it appropriate light and temperature. With proper nutrition and juvenile hormone is generated a giant soldier ant. The novelty of this experiment is that although the expression of these traits (atavisms), are lost, the ants retained the genetic potential to restore the trait. According to Abouheif, such potential atavisms, also exists in other species (in humans? human supersoldiers?).

HORMIGAS SOLDADO GIGANTES

NEEDED CHANGES in SCIENCE

In USA and Europe, a growing group of young scientists struggle to change certain uses and modes of official science which they consider expensive, elitist and outdated. I) With just 4000 euros young scientists develop their own ideas, especially in biology, using modified homemade instruments (made with 3-D printer). Genspace, is a nonprofit laboratory, open to the public based in Brooklyn, Boston and San Francisco, which broadcasts their work via online. Another wing of the movement: for-bio-hackers-lab-work-often-begins-at-homeDIYbio (make your own biology), share ideas on biology, with over 2,000 members. The central idea of these young people is that many brains working in collaboration in biotechnology, can realize ideas quickly and efficiently. They argue that many good things in biology, are simply waiting. The creation of lethal diseases in these laboratories is difficult because young scientists follow strict security measures. II) Another problem are the currently prevalent scientific journals (Elsevier, NEJM), estimated as elitist, expensive and temporarily outdated. Peer review (revisions), in these journals takes months, subscriptions are expensive and there are a number of obstacles that limit the flow of information. ResearchGate, an online social platform, has 1.3 million members, home 350 000 papers and 40 million abstracts, being a great site for serious investigation and research collaboration. Young people call for open science, online collaboration without borders, free and instantaneous flow of ideas. Besides ResearchGate, already circulate online : arXiv, PLOs, GalaxyZoo.

OLDER ADULT'S MEMORY

Although it is assumed that as we age our memory loss is more noticeable, the reality is : I) While some components of memory are affected by age others remain well preserved. The reason for this is the neural degeneration of certain brain areas, especially the frontal lobes, which focuses attention, planning and certain processes that store and retrieve information. The decrease in frontal lobe activity activates other cortical regions, preserving cognitive abilities. II) There is elaborate strategies to maintain memory: think deeply and elaborately about the meaning of information. If you require an adult to remember a name giving him 5 alternatives, he will hit more than if you just give him only one name. III) Elderly are susceptible to periods of inattention (attentional lapses), during key moments of their activity. If he not turned off a light bulb it is not that his memory fails, but insufficient attention. If a young adult performs 2 tasks simultaneously, is sure to have a difficulty in one task (word list learning). To counter these defects one should always put the keys in one visible place.

IV) We feel the effects of prospective memory (remembering something to do in the future): forgetting an appointment, not to take medicines at the right time. You can correct this defect if the actions carried out are associated with specific events: leave the pills in a prominent place in the kitchen. V) Older adults sometimes remember details that they attribute to wrong people, time or place (source memory). VI) Some older adults find it difficult to discriminate those imaginary events from that that actually occurred (reality monitoring), causing confusion about medication intake or not (he thinks he did). Source-memory defects decrease if the instructions received are antagonistic (true/false), or by giving values to people or information received. Experts also recommend: balanced diet, physical exercise, good sleep, rich social life, hobbies, escape from routine, cognitive stimulation, avoid stress, relaxation, positive thinking.

SYNTHETIC WINDPIPE TRANSPLANT

It has just performed at a hospital in Sweden, the second operation for replacement of the natural windpipe of a 30 year old man who suffered from an inoperable cancer by aother synthetic manufactured with nano-fibers of plastic called PET, commonly used in soda bottles, subsequently seeded with stem cells coming from bone marrow. The leader of this process: Paolo Macchiarini (Advanced Center for Translational Regenerative Medicine/Karolinska Institute/Stockholm), has made this process before using tracheae of deceased persons. The patient who is recovering favorably is clearly a cyborg. Now, it is expected to use resorbable plastics to build these synthetic scaffolds. Then, this become a routine procedure..

The artificial trachea was placed in a bioreactor containing stem cells in solution. 2 days after, the artificial trachea was sutured to the throat and lungs of the patient. According to David Green (Harvard Bioscience) who designed the bioreactor, the stem cells were divided to produce cartilage. Green says that was necessary to add to the bioreactor transcriptional factors to force stem cells to differentiate into specific tissues of the trachea. Apparently a series of chemical signals produced by the body of the patient facilitated the success of this transplantation. The synthetic scaffold was designed using CT scans of the nayural trachea for obtaining exact copies.

ANIMALS and........

As it is written in the NYT, there is a growing interest for studies related to morality, justice and the way we judge and treat many animals. Two questions about it, illustrate this concern: 1) If a specific epidemic killed all human beings, which remaining animal would end up evolving into Homo sapiens sapiens, or, another intelligent being endowed with logic and reasoning?. Sure, the chimpanzee, as before made the evolution. Chimpanzee and human genomes differ so little. 50 years of studies on chimpanzee forced to Jane Godall to say that emotional and social reactions of chimpanzee were so similar to humans that it was impossible to separate them from us.

Then: 2) Why do we kill and eat our cousins (animals), if the boundary between these and ours is blurred. Reflections in this regard are set out in books: "Human, Animals and Cyborgs", "Animals and Women Animals, People and Those in Between", which l emphasize the blurred boundaries between chimpanzee and us and how we should treat them. Jacques Derrida expresses what he thinks of his cat and what this might think from him, with the caveat that the cat does not dominate the modes of human communication, concluding that animals are part of that large minority made up of women and people of color .

QUIMERIC MONKEYS

In a recent technological experiment that open new therapeutic avenues for various human diseases, a team of researchers led by Shoukhrat Mitalipow (Oregon Health Sciences/University of Portland), managed to add groups of 4-dividing cells, coming from 6 embryos from different monkeys, forming the first neonatal chimeras composed of genetic material from 6 rhesus monkeys. Being very young embryonic cells, the mixture was composed of totipotent cells (which form any kind of tissues, including extraembryonic). Each chimeric embryo received genetic material from 6 different Rhesus monkeys.

Chimeras may contain genetic material from different species (animal-human, for example). Although the journal Cell which published the article refers that newborn monkeys were healthy and normal, we know that although 3 monkeys externally were males, 4% of their cells carried two X chromosomes, being genetically female. In this case the cells do not fuse with each other, but rather work together to form tissues and organs. Conclusions: 1) Allows us to have new knowledge about the specific nature of different species 2) It seems not feasible to create chimeras from pluripotent cells (not form extraembryonic tissues) 3) Someone will come up to create chimeras containing human-animal brains for experimental purposes. Many nations will not approve or oppose to this kind of experiments.

MONOS QUIMERICOS

OPTIMISM

According to the Israeli Daniel Kahneman, Nobel Prize in Economics (psychological research into economic science), although optimistic entrepreneurs have an advantage over their peers affected by depression, over-optimism may produce great economic losses. To Kahneman optimism is influenced by the socio-cultural environment of certain countries. In France, Hungary, USA and others, optimism is mixed with other natural emotions. Who is not optimist is not well. It is not certain that training could forge optimistic because we know very little of this attitude. We know that optimism have genetic roots, optimists live longer, have better immune systems, have more friends, are healthier, see the best of things. If a optimistic has economic success this fact will strength his confidence. If an athlete feels supported by his country he will play better. It is certain that optimism was created by evolution because depression is dangerous. For most entrepreneurs, optimism is the engine of capitalism. When an optimistic fails in its objectives, he will try make fewer mistakes on  next adventure. At present major oil companies analyze past and present errors (premortem analysis), adhering to strict rules. For them, risky explorations have nothing to do with emotions.

OPTIMISMO

HAWKING AT 70

When Stephen Hawking was 20, he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a neurological disease that prevented him from moving arms, legs and speak clearly, disabling him to the point that his doctors told him he would not live long enough to finish his doctorate at Cambridge before age 30. The reality is that they were wrong because within 7 days Hawking will turns 70. During this extra time of life, Hawking has given the world new ideas about black holes (emit thermal radiation), micro black holes (holding large gravitational attraction), unification of general theories of relativity, quantum and thermodynamics, creation of the universe, topology without frontiers of the universe (time and space finite in extent but without limit or edge), writing Brief History of Time (1988), enjoy relatively good health, having married three women and have a daughter. Most notable however is to have shown that ultimately the important thing in a man is his brain and his extraordinary potential. If the brain is in good condition and is able to feed itself energetically through unconventional methods, the rest of the soma is redundant. In this respect modern medicine has provide him a software that lets him talk electronically (given the loss of his natural voice after a tracheostomy) and a myriad of other technological devices of support.
