J.B.S HALDANE, AGAIN

I) Until recently I was intrigued by the current lack of giant animals. I formulated then the hypothesis that 100 million years ago -a time when dinosaurs lived- the food was endless and that they like other giant animals were only a life-plan to be validated by evolution. As competition was only between larger dinosaurs it was necessary to be more bodily efficient. Cardiovascular disease (difficulty pumping blood straight up), thermal dysfunction induced by climate change, osteoarthrosis imposed by the use and weight, induced body modifications on physiology, volume, body surface, modes to absorb and circulate bodily oxygen, etc.. Reducing the size of the bodies was necessary in order to collect and gain greater energy efficiency. With the time the front legs of Tyranosaurius rex were almost like hands and his eyes are moving closer together to acquire 3D vision in order to improve its hunting ability. In this respect, the English biologist JBS Haldane said: II) For each type of animal there is a convenient size and shape. A large change in size will inevitably lead to a change in form. A man of 18 m high, would be 19 times as wide and thick weighing 80 to 90 tons. If sections of their bones were increased only one hundred times, his weight in relation to every square inch of his bones would have to withstand 10 times more weight than normal, finally breaking. If a gazelle, with slender long bones, were bigger, her bones will break unless she develops short and thick legs (like rhinos), so that every inch of her weight has the same bone area to support it. The other possibility is that her body be compressed and his legs extended obliquely to gain stability, as the giraffe.

III) A microscopic worm has a smooth skin through which all oxygen permeates, a straight small intestine with enough surface to absorb food and only one kidney. If such worm will increase 10 times its size in any direction, its weight would be increased a thousand times so that their muscles to be used efficiently would need thousands of times more oxygen and food per day, shedding thousands of times more waste products. If its shape were not altered , its surface would increase only a hundred times, having to absorb 10 times more oxygen per minute per square mm of skin and 10 times more food per mm of intestine. Larger animals are more complicated. They can grow but only up to a limit. Comparative anatomy is a long struggle to increase surface to volume ratio. If insects were larger, they would have difficulty absorbing oxygen, unless they acquire the ability to circulate oxygen through tissues, such as lobsters. IV) It takes a minimum speed to maintain an aeroplane of a given form in the air, the speed varying in proportion to the square root of its length. If its linear dimensions were increased 4 times, the aeroplane should fly 2 times faster. An angel whose muscles do not develop more power -weight for weight- as the eagle, must need breasts of 4 feet to accommodate the wing muscles in order to save weight. Also he must have very thin legs. An eagle does not stay in the air simply by moving their wings. Soaring higher is more difficult as size increases. As a counterpart, eagles could be as large as tigers. V) All animals at rest lose the same amount of heat per unit area of skin, needing food supplies proportional to its surface and not to its weight. A mouse eats ¼ of its own weight each day to stay warm. VI) The eye is inefficient until it reaches a large size. The back of the eye which reflects the external image is composed of rods and cones. For 2 objects be distinguishable their images must fall on separate rods or cones. The mouse eye is not equivalent to the human eye, at small scale. For any use all eyes of small animals have to be larger in proportion to their bodies. Larger animals require relatively small eyes. The same applies to the brain, as we cuadruple our body weight the brain increases only twice.

J.B.S. HALDANE,OTRA VEZ

ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE SPACE

Spatial mining sensed by Isaac Asimov in his book I, Robot, is materialized with the beginning activities of the American company Planetary Resouces Inc., initially designed to extract water and minerals from Near-Earth Asteroids (NEAs), the main asteroid belt (located between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter) and more ahead of planets in our solar system. As the search for gold in the far west, the space adventure takes place in unexplored areas without competitors, or by law. A huge epic mobilized by a group of brave pioneers (Eric Anderson, Peter H. Diamandis, Christopher A. Lewicki, Thomas D. Jones, James Cameron, Tom Jones, etc), determined to win the jackpot. They expect that they earnings surpasse the initial investment of 50 billion dollars. To make matters better and according to Marc Kuchner (Princeton University) and other American astronomers sustain that in the bark of Urane and Neptune exists thick strips of diamonds.

The company expect to follow these steps: I) In the next 2 years, to launch a spacecraft (Arkyd : 100 and 300 Series), carrying a telescope browser. II) Because of the lack of gravity and atmosphere in asteroids, it will be easy to land on them. Mining robotic craft will not need big engines or parachutes for landing. Ice water will be extracted from asteroids to maintain life, break it down into breathable O and propellent H for interplanetary spacecraft. III) A robotic spacecraft will take pieces of mining asteroids extracting platinum to be used in jewelry, electronics and cars, iron and nickel to be used in space factories and other structures. Unlike Earth where heavy metals are close to her core, heavy metals in asteroids are distributed diffusely being easier to remove them.

EXTREMOPHILES, AGAIN

The expressions of the vice president of the Academy of Sciences of Russia Anatoly Grigoryev, in the sense that :"microorganisms detected in the MIR Soviet space station and currently in the International Space Station (ISS), present a danger to the orbital platform structure as they damage metal and polymers (space is perhaps the most hostile environment to human life encountered, characterized by  extreme variations in temperature, absence of atmospheric pressure,  solar and galactic cosmic radiation and zero gravity)  and may cause technical glitches ", endorses 3 things: I) It is almost surely that life existed on Earth and on any other planet similar to ours, given the rapid emergence of extremophiles microorganisms (living in extreme conditions). Their presence in the outer and inner space platforms is conceivable to be feeding them on minerals, polymers and others, through evolutive, metabolic mechanisms. According to Grigoriev in the outer hull of the ISS, microorganisms are kept alive in extreme conditions for 31 and more months.II) Do not expect to find bodily humanoids on other planets. Be happy to find bacteria. III) No advanced civilization will sent humanoids to Earth, it will be easier to send encapsulated DNA or extremophiles microbes.IV) So, Mars terraforming is possible.

EXTREMOFILOS, OTRA VEZ

ARTIFICIAL  LEAF

For over 10 years the american chemist Daniel Nocera (Henry Dreyfus Professor of Energy and Chemistry at MIT/Sun Catalytix), is  trying to copy parts of natural photosynthesis to obtain cheap energy from sunlight.  Last year he improved what he calls  artificial leaves: solar cells in thin sheets consisting of silicon and different catalytic materials (without connections to wires or external circuits), placed in water  containers   and exposed to sunlight to  generates  a flow of electricity with aid of catalysts that separates oxygen from hydrogen (bubbles on both surfaces of   an artificially leaf).   The 2 streams of bubbles can be stored and used to provide chemical energy.

Attached  to  silicon  of one side of the sheet is a layer of artificial cobalt catalyst which releases oxygen. The other side also composed of silicon, is covered with a layer of nickel-molybdenum-zinc alloy, which releases  hydrogen from  water molecules. In general, artificial leaves are composed of cheap and abundant materials: silicon, cobalt, nickel and ordinary water, Though there are still problems to solve: gas storage, efficiency
process, greater uptake of sunlight, etc, it is thought that in the future every home will have artificial leaves with abundant energy for  their homes.

HOJA ARTIFICIAL

REMOVAL OF PROSTATE, WITHOUT SIDE EFFECTS

Current therapies for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), are: I) Surgical removal with a high risk of accidental damage, including development of impotence. The enlarged prostate presses on the urethra preventing normal urination, the bladder does not empty properly, developing urinary tract infections. Half of men over age 50 suffer from BPH. II) To administer drugs conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone, under the theory that: at more age more growth of prostate cells by higher concentrations of dihydro-testosterone. Since in some cases there is less testosterone concentration prior to conventional treatment, there is reasonable doubt regarding the above theory.

III) Yigal Gat and Goren Menahem (Ramat Gan/Tel Aviv Medical Center), argue rather that BPH is due to walk on 2 legs. Whereas in quadrupeds testes blood flows horizontally into the veins, in humans blood flow upward toward the heart. In young male humans their spermatic veins have valves that allow flow up. With increasing age the valves do not work, increasing to 8 times the pressure in the prostate. Therefore, collateral vessels develop that direct blood flow through different routes. Gat and Goren have treated 28 men with BPH, closing their spermatic vessels with deficient valves through catheters, being pressure and blood flow restored to normal. Using local anesthesia 2 hours after, the patient returns home. With success rates exceeding 85%, symptoms disappear in a few weeks, returning testosterone to normal levels without damage during the procedure. In the article published in the "European Urological Review", prostate volume is reduced by up to 55% after 6 months.

EARLY PUBERTY

To our hypothesis that certain enclaves of current childrens, are developing eyes and visual neural networks denser than their peers (because of constant use of video games, computers, phones and other learning processes), we must add today other instances -as the proved age decrease- of puberty in girls. Typically, puberty in girls takes 2 years, comprising 3 events: breast growth, pubic hair and appearance of the first period, in that order. According to an english study until recently it was accepted that the onset of puberty (breast growth), began at age 11. But there are medical reports in recent years, accounting for 9 year old girls that began to show pubic hair from 6 years, be the tallest of her class and that rival the curves of their mothers. As in many of these girls the clinical tests show nothing abnormal, in recent years some are reformulating the criteria of normality for puberty. Breast growth in girls that begins at younger ages, may be due to central precocious puberty or just be departures from normality.

Among the few weapons to distinguish between precocious puberty from normality is bone x-rays that in newborns show that almost everything is cartilage. As the body grows the cartilage is replaced by bone substance, a process that stop at the end of puberty. Girls with precocious puberty complete their growth and bone maturation at earlier ages. If a girl has her first period at 6 years, cease to grow at a young age and have short stature. In 1980, Marcia Herman-Giddens (Duke University Medical Center), noting that a large number of girls aged 8 and 9 years had breast growth and pubic hair, performed a study in 17 000 girls, concluding that the average breast enlargement for white girls occurred at 9.96 years and 8.87 years for black (1997, Pediatrics), being possible causes : obesity, processed foods, plastics industry and stress. Shortly after 3 large institutions (Cincinnati Children's Hospital, Kaiser Permanent/Northern California and Mount Sinai School of Medicine/New York), established that mammary growth was occurring at age 7 in 10% of white girls, in 23% black girls, in 15% of Hispanic girls and 2% of Asian girls. In this regard many doctors agree that true early puberty begins in the brain with the production of GnRH (gonadotropin-releasing hormone). No early puberty is possible without GnRH. The GnRH via the pituitary signals the ovaries to produce estrogens that stimulate breast growth. On the other hand any brain involvement makes people more susceptible to depression. Greater connection between depression-puberty exists in early periods girls who do not have much time to make successful transitions to adolescence and beyond.

PUBERTAD   PRECOZ
