SPACE RACE: CHINA FORWARD

If all goes well, within 5 days we will watch the first lunar images of Moon’ Rainbows Bay (Sinus Iridum), sent to earth by Jadehase (motorized robotic vehicle, which will take samples and explore geological structure of lunar surface). Momenum to rate this achievement and to seek the reasons (behind a decade), why China decided to explore the space with aggressiveness and unusual speed, differing from Japan, India and others. China advances, while USA and Russia slow down their space programs due to myopia, lack of funds and several failed launches. If the mission is successful, China will not only paved the way for next manned moon landing, but will have gained knowledge beyond the so far acquired, by their peers: USA and Russia. Jadehase Lunar exploration, is part of an ambitious Chinese space program that aims to send manned missions to the moon, build its own manned space station (2020), set orbital satellite communications networks (GPS), etc. Jadehase is a remotely operated vehicle, 6-wheel, 140 kg, walking 200 m/p/hour, to survive 3 months, to explore and analyze minerals of lunar surface, being controlled by two Chinese stations located on Earth. Consider, the motivations of Chinese space program: I-Military. While every empire must have a deterrent and potentially aggressive army, the immediate goal is to have alternate plans to attack and self-defense: Retransmission of military data (own and from the enemy), from the earth to the moon and viceversa. A smart choice because in case of conflict the warring parties will destroy all satellite networks as possible. The Chinese space program led by the army will be used for military purposes, no doubt. Proof of this is the destruction (2007), of an old, climate observation satellite by a midrange ballistic missile, which alarmed to USA, concerned about the militarization of the space race. China has no clear division between their civil, military and scientific sectors. Its space program is appended to its military expansion. II) Techno-scientific-economic-industrial reasons. Do not forget that the first phase of the Space Race (USA-Russia), brought the miniaturization of many devices (mobiles, microchips, space devices). China will sought to install GPS satellite network (32 satellites linked), around the Moon, Mars, and around all possible planets, to make geography, climate, physics, chemistry, etc., planetary compared studies. On Mars and other planets there are countless mineral wealth, unmissable bite to any power: diamond sheets scattered on the surface, lakes of nitrogen, methane everywhere. III) The first human group to establish a permanent colony will have advantages over other powers. IV) Understanding and adapting human beings to moon climate, will permit a better understand of terrestrial climate change. V) Building satellites and rocket launchers is a big business. VI) Each space launch is cheaper than the last. India recently sent a probe to Mars which cost just $ 73 million. Now, the speed of China's space program: China sent its first satellite in 1970. In 2003, China put taikonauts in space. In 2007, launched its first satellite (Chang'e -1), around the moon, making maps of it. In November 2009, Chinese astronauts conducted a successful automatic coupling with the return of unmanned spacecraft. In 2011 China put into space orbit the Tiangong-1, a space laboratory. China now plans to detect and remove space debris, study black holes, build small satellites for monitoring disaster and weather forecasting, improve construction of orbital life support systems, conduct surveys of deep space, ships to be used for experiments and astronomical observations. Indeed, China has benefited from the progress made by other countries. The recent orbital satellite: Chang'e 3, recipient of this knowledge will encourage a momentary ultimate goal: a manned Moon landing.

NOT ONE, BUT SEVERAL GENOMES.

Does each human has a unique genome?. Current genomes are the product of an ancestral evolution which still continues?. The question begins to have concrete answers. Although, not a proved genomic evolution, something very close to it happened 15-22 millions years BC with the emergence of a tall and large body size primate: Proconsul, whose skeletal remains accuse him as a predecessor of human beings. Careful reconstruction of 75% of the skeleton of this anthropoid showed a body monkey (Flexible spine, narrow chest) and anthropomorphic face (round head, large eyes, clipped muzzle and vertical skull) (Walker and Teaford. 1990. Investigation y Ciencia. (150) :66-73, clear example of mosaicism (coexistence within an individual of two or more populations of cells with different genotype, supposedly originated from the same zygote), which favors a transition to upright posture and large brains. En 1953, a British woman donated blood typified in part as Type O and part as Type A (coming from his twin brother something that occurred in her mother womb), a clear case of chimerism (organism with different cell populations with genetic material from different zygotes), event more common than we previously thought. Recent articles has revealed that we have not a unique genome, but several, being established that these are not only acquired through vertical transmission (sexual), but also by horizontal transmission. Transplant recipients of different type, commonly exhibit mixtures of genomes. After an extensive analysis of chimerism, Dra. Linda Randolph says that blood of twins are mixed while in the womb as they feed by the same blood vessels. Pregnant women earn genomes of their children due to transfer of fetal cells, the same that retained in the mother's body, travel to different organs. So, every pregnant woman has the potential to be a chimera. Mosaicism is common in healthy cells. Mutations occur in fibroblasts, connective tissue, etc., being most of these mutations, benign. Extra genomes are benign, being chimerism and mosaicism common in humans. Fetal chimeric cells seem to seek to heal damaged cells, causing occasionally certain diseases. Thus, the existence of multiple genomic contributes to assemble new body designs. The way is open for constructing artificial genomes with genes off, for major diseases, including certain cancers. Such genomes would be introduced during fetal life. The concept of multiple genomes will also identify criminals when genomic analysis is inconclusive.

NOBEL PRIZE IN CHEMISTRY 2013

NOBEL PRIZE IN CHEMISTRY 2013 . Although we know that a dozen researchers would deserve the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2013, finally it was awarded only to 3 scientists, due to codes established by the Swedish Academy. Precisely : I) That many researchers participate in the same subject, discovers a collective work with amazing results. The selection of winners this year in areas of hard science (medicine, physics and chemistry), is according to our opinion, the best of the past 50 years for its scope and impact. II) There is a before and an after 2013. The techno-scientific singularity foresee by Ray Kurzweil is becoming reality. From now on, will prevail the unthinkable: maximum efforts in theory than in practice. In the words of the President of the Swedish Academy Sven Lidin ("Although still have to perform experiments, predictions have become very powerful .... " ) . Let's see: The discovery of the God Particle (Nobel Prize in Physics 2013),involved 6000 science technicians, working to the sound of predictors : Higgs, Englert and Brout, gestated for over 50 years. The actual Nobel Prize in Chemistry (chemical reactions modelled on supercomputers), emphasiz this: many science technicians adapting principles of classical and quantum physics to supercomputers programs to model organic and inorganic chemical reactions, the basis of all that exists. The near future will see grow a column of elite scientists, dedicated exclusively to create hypotheses on the border of science, continually reflecting on alternating cycles : experiments-theories-experiments-theories, ad infinitum. Martin Karplus (Harvard University), Michael Levitt (Stanford University) and Ariel Warshel (University of Southern California), won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2013, for to devise programs on classical physics that mimic the movement of millions of atoms and on quantum physics to describe breakage and formation of chemical bonds. While initially, Warshel and Levitt, calculated molecular behavior using classical laws, Karplus did the same, using quantum physics. After working jointly, Warshel and Karplus unified ideas in 1972, to make models that employ simultaneously classical and quantum physics. Experimental chemists worldwide would then know the importance of computer-modeled events that explain more about the function of chemical reactions, than the structure. An initial problem was that modeled configurations were realized only on resting states of molecules, whereas in real systems involving chemical reactions there is release or energy consumption. To solve this problem the 3 scientists, combined classical models for environment with quantum models for the active central regions, although such exercises need much computational power. The problems of the surrounding medium (dieletric medium : homogeneous mass of atoms and molecules), to the reaction, were solved using classical physics laws. Although the models are used to simulate reactions of photosynthesis to make more efficient solar cells, for the design of new drugs and development of computer experiments, Levitt seeks now resemble a living organism at molecular level .

PHYSICS NOBEL PRIZE, 2013

Finally the Nobel Prize in Physics 2013 was awarded to François Englert (Université Libre de Bruxelles/Belgium) and to Peter W. Higgs (University of Edinburgh/UK), for their theoretical work (1964), about how subatomic particles acquire mass. In 2012, scientists at CERN (Switzerland), confirmed statistically, the existence of the Higgs particle (H), at the LHC (Large Hadron Collider). The theoretical work of Englert and Higgs (central in the Standard Model of Particle Physics), described how are built all in existence, in the known universe, with the existence of a special particle -the Higgs particle- one of two initial building block of the universe - incubated and connected to an invisible field (the other building block), that fills the entire universe, without which we would not exist (our universe is not empty). Only after contacting this field, the subatomic particles acquire mass. Only after trlllions of particle collisions at the LHC could be detected statistically the existence of H particle (appearance of muons, photons or leptons, after the decaying of a particle H. Challenges remain : the nature of the neutrino (doubtfully, without mass) and the nature of non visible universe. Although the nature of dark matter is unknown, it is identified by its gravitational pull on the galaxies. On the other hand, most particle physics models only describe the visible matter -one fifth- of the total matter in the cosmos. Lack identify also, the Kaluza- Klein particle theorized as coming from the fifth dimension.

Nobelprize of medicine 2013

NOBEL PRIZE FOR MEDICINE, 2013 The Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology, was awarded the 07.10.2013, to 2 Americans : James E. Rothman (Yale University/Department of Cell Biology) and Randy W. Schekman (University of California/Department of Molecular and Cell biology) and to the German Thomas C. Südhof (Molecular and Cellular Physiology/Stanford University), due to discovery of molecular regulatory principles of intra-extracellular release and trafficking of human mini-vesicles, containing hormones, cytokines, neurotransmitters, enzymes, etc, to the right place and at the right time, essential for cell function and survival. Also, to show that abnormalities of this system determine neural disease, diabetes, immune disorders and so on. . Interestingly, Rothman telephone interviews ("major lessons in biochemistry, cell biology and molecular medicine showed that when proteins operate at sub-cellular level behave as mechanical machinery... when you get to the sort of level of the nanoscale, you find that these objects start behaving as if they were mechanical") and Schekman ("to appreciate how proteins... to be exported from cells are assembled, in a kind of assembly line process inside the cell"), discovered purely mechanical visions, logical-human-rational patterns. We would then be scheduled biorobots although the final product (human beings), has emergent properties (with free will oriented to live and reprodtion), foreseeing, that improving our genetic, physical and cognitive properties will generate more emergent properties and that the greater complexity of an organism, the greater need for accurate intra-corporeal and environmental extracorporeal communication mechanisms. If we wanted to better understand Earth's climate changes, we would have to be interconnected via satellite simultaneously to climatic changes of all the planets in our solar system . Schekman, studied the genes that regulate proteins that transport vesicles of the fungus Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Comparing normal vesicle traffic with altered traffic of genetically mutated fungal cells, he identified 3 sets (23 genes ) that control the intra- cellular transport of vesicles. Rothman, discovered that a complex of proteins allows the fusion of vesicles at specific sites of cell membrane, ensuring precise cargo release at the correct destination. Vesicle proteins bind to specific complementary proteins in the membrane, ensuring precise locations mergers. A transport system very old, although with the same general principles present in humans and fungi. Südhof discovered the mechanism (influx of calcium ions : Ca2 +, that promotes neurotransmitter release allowing the identification of key regulatory components, making vesicles (containing insulin, for example), to release its contents with high temporal precision in response to specific stimuli. Curiosamente, las entrevistas telefonicas a Rothman (“major lessons in biochemistry, biology and molecular medicine when proteins operate at the sub-cellular level they behave as mechanical machinery…when you get to the sort of level of the nanoscale, you find that these objects start behaving as if they were mechanical”) y Schekman (“to appreciate how proteins…to be exported from cells are assembled, in a kind of assembly line process inside the cell”), descubren visiones puramente mecánicas, siguiendo pautas lógico-racionales humanas.

MINIBRAINS

An interesting news -almost a technological breakthrough- is the recent generation of mini-brain- organoids, by Austrian scientists (Institute of Molecular Biotechnology. Austrian Academy of Sciences), according to an article published in Nature. In the cited paper, the scientists Juergen Knoblish and Madeline Lancaster, reported they had grown embryonic stem cells and/or induced stem cells (iPS cells), of adults, in spinning bioreactors containing oxygen and nutrients, promoting the growth of brain mini-organoids (primitive mini- brains of 4 mm width), containing interdependent brain areas, cerebral cortex, progenitor cell populations which produce self-organized and mature subtypes of cortical neurons, abundant organized radial glial stem cells, recapìtulating known findings of human cortical development.  According to the authors, the neuroectoderm (embryonic cells that originate all structures of the nervous system), obtained in early stages was placed in gel droplets to provide a support structure for developing nerve tissue. This structure grew, self-organized and differentiate in : cerebral cortex, retina and sometimes early hippocampus (memory). Knoblish and Lancaster referred that while fetuses of 1 month developed : spine, retina and cerebral cortex, fetuses of 2 months developed true primitive mini- brains, containing different types of neurons and neural tissue. These mini brain organoids were then used to generate models of study of microcephaly (smaller brain and skulls), showing that in this condition there is less number of progenitor cells and differentiated neurons. Its brain stem cells, rather than divide and increase their numbers, formed early smaller number of neurons. 3D brain organoids events, recapitulate normal and pathological development, enphasizing that any cause of developmental defects of the nervous system can be studied in these models. They will serve to investigate new drugs tested in brain tissue itself, as well as to map human brain development during early embryonic weeks. As these experiments go ahead could scientist in the next future develop brains to demand?.

BIG EYE

BIG EYE

Imagine 24 microsatellites of 1 m3 and 100 kg, each equipped with high resolution cameras, interferometers, spectrometers, analyzers of chemical composition of any matter or luminous object; orbiting around Saturn, another 24 around Jupiter, another 24 around Mars, another 12 around the moon, 12 around Ganymede, plus other 28, around the Earth, connected together, exchanging information and regularly sending the images to any home TV on Earth. Would be created then, the compared sciences: exo-meteorology, exo-vucanology, exo-seismology, etc., exceeding our understanding, tiny perspective and knowledge focused just on our planet. Then, we will regularly watch Google Mountain, Google Crater, Google Map on Mars, Saturn. That will happen very soon.

So, we must value the intentions of Project LiteSat, an Israeli firm specialized in Microsatellite Imaging System, which plans to launch soon 24 interconnected spatial microsatellites, transmitting high-resolution images. Its builders say that it is possible to launch up to 8 microsatellites in a single rocket, reaching heights of 300-350 km. Each microsatellite will carry 15 kg of photographic equipment, being scheduled to last five years. Microsatellites can pass over objectives up to 4 times a day. Microsatellites that can operate very close, in mosaic or synchronously can capture images less than 1 m long. Another company: SkySat-1 is ready to launch 28 microsatellites around the Earth to photograph the most populated regions on Earth, updating geological data, monitoring overfishing activities, melting glaciers and crops, worldwide. Planet Labs also plans to place 28 microsatellites around the Earth later this year. While some are concerned that these images mean monitor every citizen on Earth, others say not to worry, because in this way our planet will be more transparent and open.

GRAN OJO

IRIS

Europe, Japan and USA studied the sun with spatial probes. A work begun in 1960 with the probes: Pioneers 5-9, Helios 1 and 2, Solar Maximun Mission, Ulysses, Yohkoh, Soho, Trace (1998) and now the IRIS probe (NASA's Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph), set to run for 2 years. IRIS comprises a telescope coupled to a UV imaging spectrophotometer, capable of detecting every 4 seconds, individual objects up to 200 km. Its spectrograph splits sunlight into various wavelengths with their respectives quantities. The analysis of spectral lines (velocity, temperature, density of matter), provides information to determine the movement of heat energy through the photosphere-corona zone. Solar data are transferred to a ground station: Spitsbergen (Norway), after which they are retrasmitted to a supercomputer located at NASA (Ames Research Center, California).

For now, IRIS is sending detailed images of the dynamic flow of vast amounts of energy from lower layers (photosphere: 4300-8300 K temperature, higher density), towards the solar corona (1 million K temperature, lower density), showing enormous contrasts between neighboring areas just a few miles apart, with very hot and bright spots that quickly disappear. The huge energy concentrated in sun atmosphere, directs the flow of solar wind (charged particles), whose final dispersion floods all solar system. Between the crown and the photosphere, it is generated most UV radiation, which impact on near-Earth space affecting our climate.

Although the knowledge gathered by these probes are important, ideally, these data must suggest more efficient ways of using solar energy in our solar system. Some questions remain: I) Why the form of the sun is spherical?. Just we know that in stars the gravity compresses the hydrogen in a perfect sphere to allow hot gas be clean and uniform, something difficult to achieve in toroidal current model of ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor), a multinational project designed to harness the energy obtained by nuclear fusion similar to those found in the sun. II) What forces hold enormous sun energy within this sphere, rather than be diluted in interstellar space? III) What mechanisms allow the solar corona reach enormous temperatures while in the near photosphere, the temperature remains at very minor levels, similar to those of our planet? IV) Are sun and earth core’s (nuclei), ideal long lasting engines?.

IRIS

CiPSCs CELLS

What is the meaning of obtaining chemically induced stem cells (CiPSCs), functionally similar to embryonic stem cells (ESC), using only a cocktail of small molecules to reprogram somatic cells to a pluripotent state able to generate tissues and organs of the body anywhere ?. I) CiPSCs cells, is a breaktrough that involves creating a simple, easy and safe way to induce a pluripotent state. II) Means not changing or adding genes (Oct-3/4, SOX2, c-Myc and Klf4) into cells to be reprogrammed, eliminating the risk of cancer and/or dangerous mutations. III) Means no use of retrovirus to transport transcription factors to DNA of somatic cells to be reprogrammed. IV) CiPSCs cells, sisters of induced stem cells (iPSC, created by Yamanaka), lack DNA methylation errors, maintain their ability to produce viable chimeras and apparently lack of limitations on next clinical applications . These cells are immunogenic, permeable, cheaper, easily synthesized, preserved, and easy to standardize to identify their effects to inhibit and activate specific protein function.

V) CiPSCs cells, also have potential therapeutic uses to remove the controversial use of human embryos. For the creator of these cells: Deng Hongkui (Peking University), this experiment involves the creation of a new route: inducing pluripotent state in somatic cell of immunodeficient mice by combining seven small molecule compounds, generating CiPSCs : 100% viable over 6 months, at a rate of 0.2%. Obtaining these 7 compounds demanded Deng, analyze 10,000 small molecules until finally find chemical substitutes to genes. Now it is possible to generate functionally desirable cell types in regenerative medicine, using specific chemicals or drugs instead of manipulating genes. Also to analyze the mechanisms of growth of new members, as one of the genes involved in cellular reprogramming (Sall4) is also involved in cellular dedifferentiation (reprogramming) of cells of amputees members of amphibians, before the growth or regrowth thereof.

CELULAS   Ci PSCs

ANOTHER STEP TOWARDS AIDS CURE

WATCH   VIDEO

What does it means the negativization of serum, blood and tissue tests of 2 Boston/US patients previously HIV-positive with leukemia or lymphoma, after being subjected to bone marrow transplantation?. I) Such results contribute to design a cure for AIDS, as the absence of virus or antibodies to the virus in the blood and other tissues suggest the elimination of important viral reservoirs in the bone marrow, which should be a continuous generator of viral infected lymphocytes. Timothy Brown (42), was the first HIV-positive patient with acute leukemia, to receive a bone marrow transplant from a donor with an HIV resistant mutation. After transplantation, Timothy became seronegative for HIV. After 5 years without antiretroviral therapy, Timothy is now considered cured or in remission (the virus can lie dormant in the brain, gastrointestinal tract and other sites). Therefore urge new methods to detect and quantify HIV virus in hidden reservoirs II) Bone marrow transplantation has no practical use in HIV-positive people without cancer, since they live useful lives with alone antiretroviral therapy. Until we get enough knowledge about HIV virus, bone marrow transplants in HIV-positive patients should be performed only in patients with blood cancers. We need to add to the previous report the cure of a Mississippi/US, HIV-positive baby. Some researchers believe that antiretroviral drugs given at birth prevent the establishment of body viral reservoirs.
III) The reported cases encourage projects to create cells resistant to HIV infection. IV) There are some differences between Timothy and American patients with lymphoma: a) While the bone marrow of Timothy was completely destroyed with drugs and total body irradiation (mortality: 40%), the bone marrow of patients with lymphoma were only partially destroyed, a process that carries a 20% mortality. b) Timothy received a marrow from a close genetically related donor, with a rare mutation in the CCR5 receptor, a surface protein of CD4 cells which normally allows the HIV virus, enter, infect and destroy the immune system. CCR5 Delta 32 mutation causes the person who owns it to be resistant to HIV infection. In the future, genetic reengineering could artificially emulate CCR5 receptor mutation. c) Donors of Boston did not have the CCR5 Delta 32 mutation. d) Boston patients continued to receive antiretroviral therapy several years after transplantation. e) It is assumed that graft-versus-host disease generates cells that attack old infected tissues previously weakened by chemotherapy, removing it from the body: a process that lasts nine months. Although it can be fatal the graft-versus-host disease, could eliminate most viral reservoirs f) Sirolimus, seems to have helped to eliminate the HIV virus.

PERU: 2 PREHISPANIC EMPIRES

I-According to Krzysztof Makowski (Univ. Católica del Perú: PUCP), burial remains found in the archaeological complex El Castillo (Huarmey/Ancash/Peru), are andean Wari style, by the characteristics of their burial chambers: plaster floors, walls that cross as a honeycomb, use of adobe (no stone), in its construction, for obvious reasons. Buried individuals are not extended as Moche, but sitting in Wari position with few lap wrappers. II-Why the discovery of 63 mummies (50 ladies of the nobility) and 1200 objects (silver earrings, gold necklaces, pectoral and good quality ceramic), found in the complex, would modify Peruvian prehispanic history and evolutive conception of civilizations in Peru and in the world?. Being located the complex El Castillo on the north coast of Peru, far from andean Wari (40 000 inhabitants, walled urban core), capital of Wari culture (600-1200 years a.c., 25 km NE of Ayacucho), solidifies the concept of Wari Empire. Makowski, agrees that Wari culture was an empire that exist before the Incas, given their way of conquering and spread. Wari culture rooted in Warpa tradition (300 years a.c.). First conceptions of pre-hispanic civilizations (Max Uhle), were made on the basis of archaeological macrodiscoveries : Chavin, Moche, Nazca, Tiahuanaco, Inca, saw as independent settlements, with limited communicating vessels between them.

III-Wari recent findings, confirm a centralized unit in prehispanic altiplanic andean with extensions to coast and jungle. Wari extended north to Piura, south to Cuzco, Arequipa and Tacna and east to the jungle (Lamas/San Martin). Julio C. Tello, William Isbell and Luis Lumbreras said that Wari, was a synthesis of Warpa, Nazca and Tiahuanaco cultures : a first pre-Hispanic empire,  which assimilate Tiahuanaco agricultural advances and Wari controlled production, being its main challenge to store enough food surpluses. Wari’s leaders planned and developed cities (heads of regions), polychrome pottery with Tiahuanaco iconography and form. Economically they consolidated the ayllus, using heads of regions to religious, political and economic control. They developed the cult to Viracocha under the influence of Pachacamac oracle. Also a fine textilery with alpaca and vicuña threads, accounting and control methods. Speak in favor of an empire, the existence of Wari’s kings, a ruling elite, a warrior nobility, administrative officials in different regions, a priestly class and the presence of artisans, farmers, fishermen, traders, etc.

IV-Wari ended the regionalism, initiating the cultural unification of conquered territories. V- The fast succession of empires (Huari-Inca), suggest a rapid domination and environmental transformation : successful features of empires and civilizations. According to polish archaeologists Milosz Giersz and Paprycja Przadka, the enormous gains of Wari empire caused the decline of smaller cultures within them : Nazca and Mochica with whom the Wari interacted. Makowski, add that between 600 and 1200 years a.c., profound changes occurred in Andean civilization: changes in technologies, ways of building, ways of conceiving the residence of the ruler, dresses, headdresses, ways of weaving, styles of objects, bronze knowledge dissemination, booming production of silver, all originated in the south, winning northern Moche sites. The kero replaces Moche cup, the southern tumi replaces the Northern tumi, changes generated by the expansion of Wari empire, guided by a leader, which agglutinated a lot of people due to its military might. Around 1000 years a.c., Wari empire declined due to inability to meet imperial needs due to serious droughts.

PERU : 2 IMPERIOS PREHISPANICOS

LIVING NEURAL NETWORKS

Certain low budget technological line -threat unwillingly- get equal achievements than the european Human Brain Project (HBP) or the american Brain Activity Map (BAM), both with billionaires budgets. An important branch of neuroengineering is the construction of: a) single layer networks of cultured neuronal cells, without connection to organic bodies (disembodied cultures of neurons). Although bodies disconnection is a serious disadvantage because it deprives neural networks of powerful sensory stimuli, these maintain their ability to learn and memorize. If the prior interest of these networks was to keep alive a body -isolated- such interests disappear. However, they can be reconnected to computers, real or simulated robots: hybrots or animats, to study early learning, memory, plasticity, connectivity or information process. b) Neurons of these networks, included in cultures produce superfast interconnections among them (million of synapses), with axons contacting other neurons, blindly opening new avenues, releasing chemical signals that guide extensions establishing interconnectivity large meshes.

c) A multi-electrode array (MEA) with input and output devices, allows bidirectional communication between the researcher and the network. MEA can listen neuronal electrical activity and monitor brain activity. 10 000 to 25 000 neurons grown easily reconfiguring the pattern of synapses, basis of learning and memory. Electrical stimulation is vital to maintain healthy neural cultures. d) Robots connected to neuronal cultures learn in a few days to avoid walls. Robots connected to neural networks can grasp, rotate and zoom several things with help of rudimentary visual systems. e) A neuronal culture that directly controls a distribution system can mimic dopamine addiction, self-administering the neurotransmitter, at will.

f) According to the neuroengineer Steven Potter (Georgia Tech/USA) thought, is nothing more than the sum of electrical and chemical signals, making possible to generate even in these networks rudimentary self-consciousness. Noting Potter, that his mission is to build brains, he says that there is a spectrum of minds in different animals, even in oneself: if you drink coffee or not, if you are asleep or awake. Another referent of this branch is the prominent Brazilian scientist: Miguel Nicolelis (Duke University), dedicated to create human brain-machine connections and neural prostheses to rehabilitate patients with body paralysis. Also, Thomas DeMarse (University of Florida), known for designing a live computer system composed of 25,000 neurons extracted from the brain cortex of a rat, capable of controlling the flight of a jet fighter and unmanned aircraft for dangerous missions.

REDES  NEURALES   VIVAS

MIND UPLOAD: FIRST STEP?

Despite the skepticism of many scientists, transhumanists, hypothesized decades ago the possibility of a Mind Upload (whole brain emulation, mind transfer): copy the conscious mind of a human brain and transfer it to a non-biological substrate by scanning and mapping. The recipient computer would lodge a simulation replica of the original brain. The transferred mind can connect or live inside a computer or replace the brain of another biological body, extending the life. To this end, transhumanists (Sandberg, Bostrom and others) proposed:

a) Develop supercomputers, in the order of thousands of petaflops, able to make copies that think faster than a human, without necessarily being smarter. Simulate 86 billion neurons, other similar number of glial cells and 10,000 synapses per neuron, is not an easy task. The supercomputer installed in Juqueen (Germany), associated to the projects : Human Brain Project (HBP) and Whole Human Brain 3D Mapped (Big Brain), has just 6 petaflops. Consider that the processing power to emulate a human brain is doubling every year (Moore's Law). Just for 2021, the world will have supercomputers that will exceed the 1000 petaflops and:

b) Scan and accurately map the human brain. Although the transhumanist persue of immortality was not the reason for creating the Big Brain atlas (redefine brain neuroanatomical traditional maps), highlight similarities between transhumanists visions to develop a Mind Upload and the first steps of Big Brain: mapping and scanning of living or dead persons. Whole Human Brain 3D Mapped (Big Brain), is the digital 3-D reconstruction of a human brain with a spatial resolution of 20 microns, allowing us to move from macroanatomic to another microscopic perspective, almost at cellular level. The postmortem human brain of a woman of 65, was scanned with MRI before being embedded in paraffin and then cut with a microtome in 7400 sections of 2 mm thick. Technicians took a picture to each previously paraffin-embedded block as a reference to potential distortions. Sections were stained to visualize cell bodies and then scanned. Finally, the sections were aligned using section-section records, taking as references initial sections images and MRI blocks, being difficult to reconstruct histological sections and align them with their neighboring counterparts. As 20 micron thickness cuts preserved in paraffin are imperfect, transhumanists postulate the use of cryoultramicrotomes to make finer cuts, avoiding structural damage, capturing the structure of neurons and interconnections. Also, the use of immunohistochemical staining, confocal functional laser and mapping 3D brain activity with the help of magnetoncephalography and MRI (fMRI).

Big Brain, a project led for 10 years by Katrin Amunts (H. Heine University Dusseldorf, Germany) and colleagues is a free online public disposition, reference atlas of brain anatomy at microscopic level, of 10-trillion bytes, enabling the integration of multimodal data mapped within realistic standard anatomical space. From this neuroanatomical atlas it is possible extract microscopic data for modeling, simulating and testing hypotheses of spatial or genetic patterns.

THE MEANING of the UNIVERSE

Der Sinn der Welt muss ausserhalb ihrer liegen. Wittgenstein.

While America and Europe have excellent theoretical physicists, two Americans: Liza Randall and Nima Arkani-Hamed, characterized by the large number of citations of their papers, by their peers around the world. While Randall has written several books in her field and speaks soft and slowly, Arkani talk up a storm and says that he does not like write popular books. Both seek to expand the borders of the known, making imaginative theoretical innovations. Physics is attractive because always propose global theoretical frameworks (classical physics, relativity theory, quantum physics), with ability to change the perspective of the universe at different times. Among the problems studied by both highlight the issue of particles hierarchy, the cosmological constant and the possible unnaturalness of our universe. I-On the one hand, Liza Randall (51 years old. M.I.T., Harvard University), an expert in particle physics, cosmology and spatial models. As she analyzed the mass-energy scale of each particle and theorized about the way they get their energy, she discovered something strange: the weak force is  1032  times stronger than gravity (hierarchy problem of elementary particles). Then, she thought that the inheritance of gravity might transcend our 3D world, noting that certain equations of quantum mechanics, theory of relativity and theory of superstrings showed extra spatial dimensions to provide consistency to weak gravitational force. She recreate such dimensions (that you can not see or experience), with the help of a warped and deformed geometry : Randall-Sundrum model: a universe with extra dimensions that gives meaning to what is known to date by the quantum mechanics and theory of Einstein gravity. The model describes our universe as a 5D space, in which the fundamental particles -except the graviton- are contained within an object called brane. While, there could branes containing up to 11D, gravitons run through multiple dimensions. Although gravity were stronger in other dimensions, it would remain a weak force. According to Randall some dimensions would contain Kaluza-Klein particles, that although has greater mass, exhibit properties similar to  known particles, which can be demonstrated in trace collisions of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

II) On the other hand Nima Arkani-Hamed (41 years. Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, New Jersey), Iranian-Canadian-American specialist in high energy, cosmology, cosmological constant, etc. Although Arkani argues that some experiments in the LHC, were successful: discovery of the Higgs boson, the remaining have shown conflicting results, suggesting an unnatural universe, as opposed to a natural proposed by Einstein. a) The cosmological constant, theorized in 1927, postulates an expanding universe, while maintaining its stars and galaxies the same distance apart. Such constant would be the result of a gravitational attraction force (negative) and a repulsive (positive), to prevent the collapse of the universe, with its equilibrium value: 0. As currently occurs an acceleration of the expansion of the universe, some theorists fear that it can prevent galaxy and star formation, unless exist fine-tunings and cancellations. In this context, only the existence of millions of universes into a great void, would explain the huge variation of values of the cosmological constant and other physical parameters. According to Arkani, many constants of nature are exponentially different from those offered by natural laws (discarding life), unless they are strangely delineated by cancellations and fine-tunings to prevent the collapse of the universe. So, our 4D universe, would be the result of stability requirements put forward by the nature to avoid collisions that would destroy it.

b) With respect to supersymmetry, Arkani said that it is used by almost all physicists: to extend the standard model of particle physics, to understand better certain distortions caused by violent fluctuations in the vacuum energy (which would prevent the formation of universes), as distances are shorter, to refine the structure of quantum field theories, studying the dynamics of quantum field theories, etc.. c) Issue of hierarchies : Arkani and colleagues devised in 1998 the ADD model with huge extra dimensions to explain the weakness of gravity relative to other forces. A theory that requires standard model fields be confined to a 4D brane, gravity being propagated trough additional spatial dimensions, with the possibility that gravity be modified at large distances and times to amend certain cosmological unaccuracies. This fine-tuning and the problem of hierarchies would have a common explanation for low energy universes. While multiple universes are intertwined, nature will not be a good guide to weak scales. If the universe is unnatural, with fundamental constants unlikely (and yet life exists), then a huge number of universes must exist.

I- De un lado, Liza Randall (51 años.

II) De otro lado Nima Arkani-Hamed (41 años. Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, New Jersey), irani-canadiense-americano, especialista en altas energias, cosmología, constante cosmológica, etc.
