NOBEL PRIZE IN CHEMISTRY 2013

NOBEL PRIZE IN CHEMISTRY 2013 . Although we know that a dozen researchers would deserve the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2013, finally it was awarded only to 3 scientists, due to codes established by the Swedish Academy. Precisely : I) That many researchers participate in the same subject, discovers a collective work with amazing results. The selection of winners this year in areas of hard science (medicine, physics and chemistry), is according to our opinion, the best of the past 50 years for its scope and impact. II) There is a before and an after 2013. The techno-scientific singularity foresee by Ray Kurzweil is becoming reality. From now on, will prevail the unthinkable: maximum efforts in theory than in practice. In the words of the President of the Swedish Academy Sven Lidin ("Although still have to perform experiments, predictions have become very powerful .... " ) . Let's see: The discovery of the God Particle (Nobel Prize in Physics 2013),involved 6000 science technicians, working to the sound of predictors : Higgs, Englert and Brout, gestated for over 50 years. The actual Nobel Prize in Chemistry (chemical reactions modelled on supercomputers), emphasiz this: many science technicians adapting principles of classical and quantum physics to supercomputers programs to model organic and inorganic chemical reactions, the basis of all that exists. The near future will see grow a column of elite scientists, dedicated exclusively to create hypotheses on the border of science, continually reflecting on alternating cycles : experiments-theories-experiments-theories, ad infinitum. Martin Karplus (Harvard University), Michael Levitt (Stanford University) and Ariel Warshel (University of Southern California), won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2013, for to devise programs on classical physics that mimic the movement of millions of atoms and on quantum physics to describe breakage and formation of chemical bonds. While initially, Warshel and Levitt, calculated molecular behavior using classical laws, Karplus did the same, using quantum physics. After working jointly, Warshel and Karplus unified ideas in 1972, to make models that employ simultaneously classical and quantum physics. Experimental chemists worldwide would then know the importance of computer-modeled events that explain more about the function of chemical reactions, than the structure. An initial problem was that modeled configurations were realized only on resting states of molecules, whereas in real systems involving chemical reactions there is release or energy consumption. To solve this problem the 3 scientists, combined classical models for environment with quantum models for the active central regions, although such exercises need much computational power. The problems of the surrounding medium (dieletric medium : homogeneous mass of atoms and molecules), to the reaction, were solved using classical physics laws. Although the models are used to simulate reactions of photosynthesis to make more efficient solar cells, for the design of new drugs and development of computer experiments, Levitt seeks now resemble a living organism at molecular level .

PHYSICS NOBEL PRIZE, 2013

Finally the Nobel Prize in Physics 2013 was awarded to François Englert (Université Libre de Bruxelles/Belgium) and to Peter W. Higgs (University of Edinburgh/UK), for their theoretical work (1964), about how subatomic particles acquire mass. In 2012, scientists at CERN (Switzerland), confirmed statistically, the existence of the Higgs particle (H), at the LHC (Large Hadron Collider). The theoretical work of Englert and Higgs (central in the Standard Model of Particle Physics), described how are built all in existence, in the known universe, with the existence of a special particle -the Higgs particle- one of two initial building block of the universe - incubated and connected to an invisible field (the other building block), that fills the entire universe, without which we would not exist (our universe is not empty). Only after contacting this field, the subatomic particles acquire mass. Only after trlllions of particle collisions at the LHC could be detected statistically the existence of H particle (appearance of muons, photons or leptons, after the decaying of a particle H. Challenges remain : the nature of the neutrino (doubtfully, without mass) and the nature of non visible universe. Although the nature of dark matter is unknown, it is identified by its gravitational pull on the galaxies. On the other hand, most particle physics models only describe the visible matter -one fifth- of the total matter in the cosmos. Lack identify also, the Kaluza- Klein particle theorized as coming from the fifth dimension.

Nobelprize of medicine 2013

NOBEL PRIZE FOR MEDICINE, 2013 The Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology, was awarded the 07.10.2013, to 2 Americans : James E. Rothman (Yale University/Department of Cell Biology) and Randy W. Schekman (University of California/Department of Molecular and Cell biology) and to the German Thomas C. Südhof (Molecular and Cellular Physiology/Stanford University), due to discovery of molecular regulatory principles of intra-extracellular release and trafficking of human mini-vesicles, containing hormones, cytokines, neurotransmitters, enzymes, etc, to the right place and at the right time, essential for cell function and survival. Also, to show that abnormalities of this system determine neural disease, diabetes, immune disorders and so on. . Interestingly, Rothman telephone interviews ("major lessons in biochemistry, cell biology and molecular medicine showed that when proteins operate at sub-cellular level behave as mechanical machinery... when you get to the sort of level of the nanoscale, you find that these objects start behaving as if they were mechanical") and Schekman ("to appreciate how proteins... to be exported from cells are assembled, in a kind of assembly line process inside the cell"), discovered purely mechanical visions, logical-human-rational patterns. We would then be scheduled biorobots although the final product (human beings), has emergent properties (with free will oriented to live and reprodtion), foreseeing, that improving our genetic, physical and cognitive properties will generate more emergent properties and that the greater complexity of an organism, the greater need for accurate intra-corporeal and environmental extracorporeal communication mechanisms. If we wanted to better understand Earth's climate changes, we would have to be interconnected via satellite simultaneously to climatic changes of all the planets in our solar system . Schekman, studied the genes that regulate proteins that transport vesicles of the fungus Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Comparing normal vesicle traffic with altered traffic of genetically mutated fungal cells, he identified 3 sets (23 genes ) that control the intra- cellular transport of vesicles. Rothman, discovered that a complex of proteins allows the fusion of vesicles at specific sites of cell membrane, ensuring precise cargo release at the correct destination. Vesicle proteins bind to specific complementary proteins in the membrane, ensuring precise locations mergers. A transport system very old, although with the same general principles present in humans and fungi. Südhof discovered the mechanism (influx of calcium ions : Ca2 +, that promotes neurotransmitter release allowing the identification of key regulatory components, making vesicles (containing insulin, for example), to release its contents with high temporal precision in response to specific stimuli. Curiosamente, las entrevistas telefonicas a Rothman (“major lessons in biochemistry, biology and molecular medicine when proteins operate at the sub-cellular level they behave as mechanical machinery…when you get to the sort of level of the nanoscale, you find that these objects start behaving as if they were mechanical”) y Schekman (“to appreciate how proteins…to be exported from cells are assembled, in a kind of assembly line process inside the cell”), descubren visiones puramente mecánicas, siguiendo pautas lógico-racionales humanas.
