CLASSIC or LOGICAL FOUNDATIONAL MATH?

MATH REFOUNDATION

Although solid, the classic basic structures of mathematics (theorems, axioms) have been threatened several times. However, without the use of classical mathematics, neither Newton nor Einstein, could have abstracted the mechanism of acceleration and derivates that analyzes it or the space-time warping (math of Riemann), induced by the gravitational effects of planets, stars and other stellar objects, respectively. In early 1900, Bertrand Russell and Alfred Whitehead decided to refound mathematics (Principia Mathematica), in a cyclopean effort that would take 10 years. Russell and Whitehead argued in   Principia, that mathematics was derivable from a small number of founding formal logic principles. The philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein would add that mathematics was pure tautology, based on intuition and logical principles and whether to reestablish something was logic, from which derived the mathematics. Later (1931), the incompleteness theorem proposed by Kurt Godel, showed that any complex mathematical system cannot prove its own consistency, with which certain math advances based on classic theorems and axioms could be wrong. Currently, Vladimir Voevodsky (Advanced Study. Princeton, NJ) and others insist that old mathematical rules must be rewritten with the help of specific software to test any new mathematical theorem or proposition, with total certainty. And, although there are alternative math programs to classic foundational math, its slow acceptance by mathematicians is due to difficulties to incorporate mathematical language into computers because certain mathematical branches are too abstract and complex. Set Theory, a foundational  alternative program based on mathematical and logical rules associated to  computers, try to be more secure than  numbers, starting with the null set (0), next,  the number 1, a new set with one  element containing in addition  the set null and so on. Every mathematical object is constructed from the set null. A whole number is a set of sets that came before it, fractions are parts of whole numbers, decimal are digit sequences, functions in the plane:  sets of ordered pairs, complicated structures: set of things. Another foundational mathematical program: Type theory, is able to analyze the intrinsic properties of spaces, circles and topological doughnuts, grouping equivalent objects in order to overlap such spaces and reduce them. There is equivalence (homotopy space), if an object can be deformed into the other by shrinking or thickening regions, without tearing.  If the common finding of the A-R-Q and C-X-K objects is a hole, both are equivalent and can therefore be transformed into a line or a foundational point. In topology, two points in space are equivalent, if there is a way to connect them. The collection of all routes between points x and y, is then seen as a single type. Voevodsky, now try to formalize higher order relations in mathematical objects called ∞-groupoids, leading to the development of univalent foundations, capable of reshaping mathematics probing with certainty any new mathematical theorem or proposition. Voevodsky critics doubt that  math formalization using computers be possible.

AFRICAN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY IN AFRICA

For 15 years several African nations have begun to increase their economic budgets in science and technology (S & T), determining a growing number ofinternational scientific papers (tropical diseases, public health, agriculture, environment), an increasing  number of laboratories of excellence, many pan-African collaborative works with institutes and abroad universities (England, France, USA, Switzerland, Brazil, China). Africa seeks independence from foreign aid (> 90% of research money comes from outside) in order to try to develop their own S & T. A growing number of African scientists estimate as harmful the foreign aid, due that it   promote external dependence, have their own priorities and not solve the basic problems of African nations, also discriminate in the workplace to African scientists and technicians (a lawsuit for employment discrimination -2014- forced the Kenya Medical Research Institute: KEMRI, to compensatory payment: 56 000 dollars to each of 6 African doctors). Other scientists add that foreign aid deters African governments to invest in their own S & T. It is argued also, that in some collaborative works, African scientists collect samples and other data, while their foreign counterparts analyze, write and publish the findings without giving credit to their African counterparts. Although there is much to be done,  fruits of African efforts are : a) modern laboratories: the Kenya's Centre for Geographic Medicine Research in Kilifi (Tropical Disease Research), KEMRI, with investigations in Ebola  and related vaccines, Uganda's Med Biotech Laboratories, dedicated to biotechnology in agriculture and environmental regulations. b) The growing interest of African ministers of science to raise funds (target: 3% of gross domestic product) in S % T, forge networks  of  S & T training, increase the number of PhDs and give financial support to researchers and entrepreneurs. c) At present, while 1% of published agricultural papers in international journals are   co-authored by Nigerian scientists, 0.5% of scientific papers in worldwide immunology and 0.3% of environment and ecology papers are co-authored by Kenya scientists. Africa as a whole published 52,000 scientific papers   per year in international journals. d) To qualify African S & T collaborative work, was established in Genoa, the COHRED (Council on Health Research for Development), Fairness Index, to certify good collaborative practices. The Science, Technology and Innovation Strategy for Africa (STISA), has a 10-year plan aimed at improving  economic and  social development, defeat   hunger, disease and unemployment and establishing  solid structural foundation for  development of S & T strategies. e) Efforts that gained politicians support to co-host the Square Kilometre Array, a gigantic American Radio telescope to be built between South Africa and Australia. Nigeria has launched its satellite: NigeriaSat-X built by Nigerianengineers. Uganda has the Med Biotech Laboratories in Kampala developing promising malaria vaccines. Uganda also develops: bananas enriched   with vitamin A and iron and genetically modified bananas resistant to wilt disease. Kenya has the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute located in Mombasa and the KEMRI, developing drugs, vaccines, and diagnostic kits. Tanzania: invests $ 234 million (38% from abroad) in S & T and has the Ifakara Health Institute (IHI), who study malaria in partnership with the Swiss Tropical Institute. Senegal has the largest number of African researchers (661 per million), highly qualified (25% with PhD), engaged in renewable energy research, removing salt from soils conditioned by drought and strengthening of seeds. Rwanda, invest efforts in reducing the prevalence of malaria and AIDS, having also built 2,300 km of fiber optic cables to expand access to the Internet.

SPACE-TIME

SPACE-TIME STRUCTURE

Three ideas in theoretical physics (structure of space-time,  inside black hole information and subatomic particles  entanglement among  wormholes), are revolutionizing  our understanding of space-time, explaining in a logical and simple way the framework   and relations of space-time, which as we have already mentioned in a previous post, looks like a giant living organism in constant evolution and change. I) The intimate structure of space-time appears as one with  nodes networks, simultaneously interconnected among them (like sensor network nodes), arising  from 2D   quantum subatomic  scales (from  each two entangled particles created in  the big bang),  forming later step by step 3D visible and more complex, large-scale structures. Deep space connection between each and every one of the parts of the structure of space-time arises from subatomic quantum entanglement, with quantum information space focusing on complex interconnected quantum network nodes. Entanglement of subatomic particles in early universe would have formed the innermost primal network nodes combining among them to form higher-level nodes, causing   the final structure of space-time: a continuous quantum network. II) Regarding remote entanglement, subatomic quantum particles are able to remain interconnected sharing information with each other using space-time wormholes. III) The third idea arising from the minds of Leonard Susskind and Juan Maldacena, postulates that from 2D structures, is possible to generate emerging 3D structures, just as 1D structure is capable to generate 2D structure under the holographic principle. Accordingly to previous statement, 3D information of a black hole’s inside would remain encoded in the 2D horizon outer surface of this spatial phenomenon. It seems that our entire 3D universe emerges from a 2D encoded source.

GERM CELL EDITION

GERMINATIVE CELL DNA EDITION

Edward Lampier (Chief of Sangamo BioSciences and Chairman of Alliance for Regenerative Medicine), says that  current artificial DNA edition  of  germ (reproductive) human line cells, is dangerous, recommending not to use it for their unpredictable effects on future generations and because current therapeutic benefits are low. To this recommendation, Lampier added ethical considerations (instead of repairing genetic defects would be used for non-therapeutic aims: generate athletes or change the color of the eyes of children). As there are currently security problems, Lampier suggests to explore DNA edition of somatic (non-reproductive) cells, to treat hemophilia, sickle-cell anemia, cancer and HIV/AIDS, where the removal of a gene encoding receptors for HIV (present in white blood cells), could produce functionally cure. Added Lampier, that there is no guarantee that current edition can eliminate mutations in all abnormal germ cells. By increasing the dose of nucleases, possibility of total correction increases, but also the risk of unwanted genome cutting. There is no assurance that the edition can remove the 2 copies of the gene of an embryo. The cell may be divided before complete removing the gene causing a genetic mosaic. Also, not all embryo cells would carry the defective gene. Finally, potential changes may take years to appear. In recent weeks, Lampier warnings were supported by news that Chinese scientists had reported the edition  of human embryonic genomes published in Protein & Cell one Chinese online journal, after the article  was rejected by Science and Nature  journals, by ethical considerations. Junjiu Huang (Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou), said that was impossible to attempt to modify the altered gene of β-thalassemia embryos using genetic edition CRISPR/Cas9. Chinese scientist injects the enzyme to 86 embryos waiting 48 hours to verify the replacement of the mutated gene. Only 28 embryos surviving the elimination of the abnormal gene, a poor result as a successful replacement requires removal of the gene in 100% of cells. Huang reported on the other hand a large number of mutations outside the target area, assuming they were introduced by the CRISPR/Cas9 complex, acting mechanically in other areas of the genome. Critics said some of these abnormal changes could be passed on to future generations. Not so pessimistic Craig Mello (University of Massachusetts), believes that when the technique will be  and safe, modified genetic lines will save us  from cancer, diabetes and aging problems.
