BRAIN :A BIOCOMPUTER

BRAIN: EVOLVED AND ADVANCED COMPUTER

Given that in previous articles, we have argued that human’s beings are bio-machines without free will (programmed for selfish purposes), it is natural that we agree with Dr. Gary Marcus (psychologist specialized in neurological sciences. New York, University), in the sense that brain functioning has similarities with the operation of modern computers. According to Marcus, ignore this point of view, reflects ignorance. I) Opponents to these similarities, argue that nerve cells are too slow and have many variables to be compared to transistors and logic gates of modern computers, forgetting that these criticisms come from abstractions of small experiments  (traffic of ions through a single neuron) without knowing how holistically works and what is the brain. II) Opponents to these similarities argue that the brain does not act sequentially, but on the contrary:  different parts of the brain do many things in parallel and simultaneously. A misconception because even the simplest computers work with a degree of parallelism performing various tasks simultaneously on the hard disk controller and on the central processor.

III) Opponents to these similarities also argue that brains works analogously (continuously) while computers do in digital form (by discrete divisions). But, digital computer can also perform analogous processes. IV) Opponents say that only the brain can generate emotions. But the amygdale (a brain seat of emotions modulation) works just like the rest of the brain: transmits signals, integrates information and transforms inputs into outputs. When AI (artificial intelligence), equals all human brain functions (all hormonal control circuits, body movements, neural signals, consciousness, etc), the new whole artificial brain will acquired emergent functions including : emotions (initially understood as warning and prevention signs) and then shunts them. V) If brain and emotions have functional similarities, it will depend on how we define the things. Although different, a bird and a plane fly. Marcus believes the computer fieldprogrammable gate array; will give a preview of how human brain works. This computer has a large number of logical blocks programs, configured and reconfigured individually to perform a range of tasks. A logical block may be focused on arithmetic, another on another task, etc., being the total computation the result on how individual parts are configured. The idea is that the brain possesses basic building blocks (artificial computational primitive patterns), highly orchestrated,  to build sequences, retrieving information from memory and target information to different locations. VI) Identifying these building blocks will allow us to connect the language of neurons and synapses to the diversity of human behavior (including emotions), also serving to understand how biological brain programs were built.

CEREBRO: COMPUTADOR EVOLUCIONADO Y AVANZADO

TAVR VALVE PROCEDURE

VALVE PROSTHESES WITHOUT SURGERY
Preceded by experiments in pigs and recently continued with insertions of valve prosthesis in patients at high risk for open heart surgery, the use of transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), is increasing. Although currently the procedure is only authorized to be used in elderly  or demoted patients  with severe aortic stenosis, experts who use it begin to mutter that soon these procedures  will be used in any valvular injury, at any age and how much fact as possible, eliminating the name of ineligible patients for valve replacements. The new valves are made from the lining of the heart of a cow, being carried to its destination through a catheter inserted into the femoral artery. Once the valve reach the heart, opens like an umbrella. After being installed the valve, the catheter is removed, leaving in the same place the damaged natural valve and the implanted prosthesis. The procedure that takes about an hour, is performed under local anesthesia and few complications, with the patient awake, the same that is sent to his home 4-5 days later. Some critics argue that the procedure can release debris that can cause strokes.

HEAD TRANSPLANT

HEAD TRANSPLANT. II

Trying to gain consensus and financial support to make the first head transplant in 2016 or 2017, the Italian neurosurgeon Sergio Canavero present their surgical protocols to a crowd of  scientists and potential money donors gathered at the conference of the American Academy of Neurological and Orthopedic Surgeons in Annapolis, Maryland. There, he met his first voluntary patient the Russian Valery Spiridonov, 30, affected by a wasting, progressive and incurable disease (Werdnig-Hoffmann disease). The subjects of controversy for his protocols are summarized as follows: 1) Canavero believes that silencing the immune system to prevent rejection of the head will be possible using successful conventional anti-rejection medications. 2) To prevent brain damage from lack of oxygen, he will decrease brain and body temperature to 12 or 15 ° C, so the cells will consume less energy and neurosurgeons will have enough time to connect brain to body cerebral blood vessels. Critics say that despite cooling a stroke will occur. 3) With regard to cutting the spinal cord, Canavero will employ a very sharp blade, to obtain a clean cut. As it is known in road traffic paraplegia spinal cords are completely crushed and distorted. Clean cuts that employ less force allow preservation of many nerve endings, although nerve regrowth is not secured by themselves. 4) Using polyethylene glycol (PEG) as a bridge to fill the gap between brain and body nerve endings was showed in a study with regrowth of nerve fibers in paraplegic rats whose mobility improved markedly. His critics say that the ends of separate nerve fibers die after a short time if they are disconnected from the brain. PEF, rather stimulate the growth of new brain nerve fibers to fill gaps in the spinal cord. There, they would activate cells that control body movement.  PEG help control of all body movement is still difficult, although the 2014 Polish scientists helped to walk to a paraplegic man using nerve cells of the nose. Canavero not look very concerned about this, since according to him, are sufficient 10-20% of active neural cells of the spinal cord to transmit movements of the brain to the body, adding that as the spinal cord is a slave of the brain, and has neurons that have specific instructions to perform larger movements. That’s to say that for a person to mobilize it is enough to stimulate his spinal cord. 5) Canavero argues that if PEG fails, there are other alternatives:  flexible electrodes implanted in the spinal cord, with external power energy. 6) The Italian neurosurgeon thinks of cutting the spinal cord at the lowest possible level to avoid affecting the respiratory center and other vital centers. His critics say that a mistake at this level would determine the existence of a living head, without body control, that cannot eat or breathe on her own.

TRASPLANTE  DE  CABEZA. II

LIGHTSAIL

PENCIL SHIP PROPELLED BY LIGHT

Carrying terrestrial technology into a microsatellite triplet (three cubsats 10 x 10 cm, joined together to carry large solar panels: 344 square feet), the small ship: Lightsail, which like a bottle carrying an explicit techno-message on its inside, is struggling to position itself for the first time in Earth orbit with only the aid of sunlight as fuel. Here, although the principle is simple, the prospect is infinite. By reflecting sunlight into light and large mirrors (solar sails or panels), photons transfer their energy and momentum to mobilize ship sails. Although the resulting acceleration is minimal -but continuous. it is expected the ship  will reach higher speeds. The futuristic perspective is to reach out the heliopause and continue exploring our entire universe aided by the light of other solar systems. The accomplishments of the Lighsail around our orbit is only an experimental trial. The ultimate goal is to leave our solar system where there appear not to exist intelligent civilizations and explore the infinite where surely we will find other energy sources, new habitats and new possibilities. LightSail are small ships privately funded from citizens around the world under the direction of The Planetary Society, not dependent on any space agency. The second step will be implemented in 2016 with the launch of another Lightsail beyond our orbit. The idea of Lightsail project was first proposed by the astronomer Carl Sagan. The Planetary Society, which has no access to the extensive network of satellites and radiotelescopes that NASA has around the world, has only two land stations: California State Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo and the Georgia Institute of Technology.
